What do you get for your fee in joining camra ? |
You get 40 x 50p vouchers off the price of a pint (£20) at JDW providing the pint costs at least £1.50 in which case you pay a minimum of £1
The vouchers are spread between 4 quarters of the year, and the only time they can't be used is in December
The membership is now (I think) £24 and you also get a monthly magazine plus the chance to take up special offers, including things like 10% off some UK holidays involving things like canalboating (a typical CAMRA member pastime!)
As Dalei Lama says, It's almost worth it for the vouchers alone but I reckon it's grown too big for what it tries to do, which includes lobbying the government to keep pubs open, encourage the big brewers to allow tied houses to sell guest ales and keep the tax off beer! |  |

I am a fan of JDW for the variety of guest ales and it's usually pretty peaceful, but even without the 50p off vouchers at around the £2 a pint mark you can't go wrong.
It's sad that they've not got their act together in terms of admin. I find it hard to believe they were deliberately trying it on (your typical CAMRA member doesn't take that kind of thing lightly!) but they made out as if I was the one trying it on - and that's unforgiveable.

I don't mind JDW either, but beer quality can be hit and miss sometimes. As you say, though, they are rarely beaten on price.
It is sad, but their campaign is largely run now. Non-real-ale pubs are the exception and not the rule now and craft breweries and new beers are appearing everywhere. It is also one of the fastest growing drinks sector - maybe even taking share from the Magners type market, although that sector keeps reinventing new flavours and new alco-pop alternatives.
CAMRA does keep spreading the word and doing a good job, but it seemed to me that once they topped the 100k membership mark, they just got a little too big for their own boots and alienated (pun intended) some of their membership in the process!

Ah yes, I forgot about that. Showing your CAMRA card can get 10p or more knocked off the price of a pint where advertised, which isn't to be sniffed at, but if you're like me you can feel a bit of cheapskate doing that, especially in a crowded bar!
I learnt my lesson when arriving late for the game at Bristol Rovers last April. We'd pre-identified our CAMRA pub (the Annexe Inn) but there was no parking nearby and by the time we'd parked up we only had time for a swift half. They were advertising 20p off a pint so I calmly asked if they'd knock 10p off a half! Noooooooo!!
All ended well though. After the vital win we called back in to sample a full pint and there at the bar with CAMRA card in hand was the most gorgeous young lady. I couldn't help but ask her about her CAMRA membership and after a bit of a chat I was left wondering if I should re-locate to Bristol! | |

Funny you should mention Lancaster, it's a great place for real ale. The bar at the White Cross has (I believe) the biggest range of ales available anywhere apart from a beer festival, and the one further along the canal's pretty good too, the Water Witch. | |

Small world huh? I worked for a company that had manufacturing on Moor Lane - all of 100 yards further up the road from the Dukes. All that area will eventually be the subject of a compulsory purchase order as the City Council is looking to develop it with residential and commercial property and some green belt. It will be connected to the current shopping centre by a Sky Walk when planning permission is finally granted (allegedly). Presume the Dukes will be no more?
The Borough has 8 hand pumps. Plenty of leather seats in the front pub bit and country kitchen type tables in the back restaurant area with pews and some booths too. Deli type food offerings + heartier fayre ...... better still take a look.

There are still a couple of boozers down by the river and a decent French restaurant that does real good food and one night I think it had 2 or 3-course squiffy dinner and a bottle of house plonk (EACH) for £25pp.
PS My folks live in Morecambe. Best pub there is probably the Palatine, but a few other good 'uns too. Oops - I forgot - this is a footie forum!  | |

It'd be shame if the Dukes went. I love that Italian on the corner too.
The thing about Lancaster is its location. Carry on along Moor Lane and within 5-10 minutes you're in open countryside. There's the river, Morecambe and the Lakes. And the beer.
A great day out from there is catching the train to Grange-over-Sands and the connecting bus to Cartmel for the races. Done that a couple of bank holidays. | |

There was a pub in Bowland Bridge that held that title. (over 20 years ago). Hare and Hounds??? I have also frequented many pubs round Lancaster. (My Dad lived in the area when he retired). Golden Ball at Snatchems was a regular Sunday Lunchtime call. |  | | |

The Bull and Anchor is probably your best bet, good food, good beer and free parking if you are driving, 5-10 minute walk from the ground. A couple of the other pubs round here can be a little bit 'dodgy' so I would recommend avoiding them...
