Well, maybe by bringing him on today as an apparently unnecessary 94th minute sub for Rathbone, Hilly was marking his farewell appearance.

Any player with a few goals and a bit of pace is bound to attract some interest from clubs who want more scoring options - and that's probably about half of L1. I'd be surprised if there's interest at a higher level: his pre-Dale career wasn't anything special and his 9 league goals in 52 appearances for Dale isn't spectacular.

Most managers like to have a dabble in the transfer market, but I'd expect KH to rely on his younger players to fill any gap left by MNL. No doubt he'll be keen to keep Keith Keane's services. I'm not sure when that loan period was due to end - nor that for Sanmi Odelusi, though maybe he's already back at his home club.

Dale's main interest in the transfer window looks like waiting to see whether Scott Hogan moves. If he does, any cash would probably be better earmarked for improving the stadium and negotiating contract extensions.

As for the younger players nurtured by Hilly - Camps, Rafferty, Allen, Cannon, Bunney, Rathbone - though they'd all find other clubs if released, I doubt any are at the level of attracting the sort of bids that the club would find it hard to reject.

Hill has already stated that no one will be leaving in January. As good as NML is, he isnt a goal scorer, not even at double figures for the Dale. He has great strength and dribbling ability, but he hasn't shone enough at Dale to warrent a big enough offer that would tempt us to sell him. The January transfer window is the desperation window, clubs want goalscorers to keep them up or get them up, NML will not do either. Im a massive fan of his, he is vital to how we play, hope he gets back to fitness soon.

I would have thought the opposite could be true. A 94th minute appearance in a league win could gift NML a win bonus extra of a few hundred quid. Maybe a thank you for his professionalism in training and to let him know he's still in Hill's plans.

Surely managers will be seeking to address whatever area of their squad requires improving? If a team is shipping goals a manager will be desperate for a defender/goalkeeper or if their squad lacks width they will be looking for wide players etc. If what you say is true then only strikers would move in the January window. This is clearly not the case and never has been ??

Hilly has got a habit of making very late substitutions: NML and Jamie Allen in the 85th minute vs Shrewsbury, Allen and Cannon (89th min) vs Chesterfield, Cannon and NML (89th min) vs Scunthorpe.

If it is a way of bunging a few hundred quid to a couple of those on the bench, I wonder if those who don't get picked are happy about it - and are Chris Dunphy and the directors!

Earlier in the season, Sanmi Odelusi made several last-few-minutes appearances. Maybe Wigan were picking up the tab.

I did not say that only strikers went in the January transfer window. I said it is often goalscorers that get bigger moves come January, when clubs are desperate to make a push for promotion or scramble to stay up, be that an attacking midfielder or a winger/striker. I don't see NML commanding a big enough fee that it would tempt us to sell him under these circumstances.

It is 30 seconds I believe,and it doesn't take any longer for a player to run onto the pitch so hardly a crafty tactic...

Try timing it. Managers looking to waste time sub a player from far side of pitch who often plays the distracted attention card. Play is stopped for far more than 30 seconds.

I agree.

Someone marked me down for suggesting such a thing, without being able to put forward a counter argument, but it happens , often with substitutions.

NOT saying Dale do it on purpose to waste time, but some do.

The late substitutions aren't as much about wasting time as breaking up the play and slowing the tempo of the game. Players also go onto the pitch with very specific instructions.

Anyway back to the OP yes silly season has begun! I can see this being a big spending window!
