Maybe, Brian, maybe not. Labour are kicking themselves because they had underestimated the surge in their own support, and didn't put anyone on the ground in places like Hastings, in favour of defending seats like Tooting (which now has a 15k majority). But the lesson is that there's at least 20 more seats where a decent push could do the trick next time, with a huge number of activists who only really joined up in the last couple of weeks but are now ready to go the minute there's another election.

There's some very bright spots here. A whole new generation of voters who aren't going to suddenly decide they like tuition fees and renting a flat for the rest of their life, a 40% share of the vote for a platform of something getting on for actual socialism. And who have the Tories got who doesn't seem tainted and stale? Tory activists love Johnson, but London was sick of him long before he left and I can't see much of the country finding him amusing. The only Tory leader I'd be afraid of in an election in six months is Ruth Davidson, and as of now she doesn't have a seat in Westminster.

And I know what you mean about this Tory manifesto being particularly bad, but there's always a lack of ideas with them - look at Cameron's in 2015, now only memorable for promising the EU referendum. People are skint, and angry, and seven years in, the Tories have no ideas worth the name. It's always the same with them - their tactic is just to attack whatever the last Labour government did or was, which as it recedes into the distance of people's memories, becomes less and less effective. And then out they go...

Great post. As for Tory ideas anyone remember Dave's 'Big Society'? The 'New Jack Swing' of political innovation.

Yeh brilliant democratic process.. lol.
Surely that's my right, to not vote for anyone I don't like.?
Like I said, I just get on with it and dont complain.
Sorry, correction, there's always something to complain about, I just don't complain about whose in charge.
6 down votes now.. I'm hurt.
I do wonder if my generation 30/40s age group have just woken up to politics ,got to the age where they feel that a vote is important and will make a difference. I've grown up thinking the Tory's were the bad guys. Thatcher , poll tax, etc etc. There's still a part of me that wants that feel good 90s brit pop things will only get better vibe.. yeh look how that turned out. War and a massive recession I'm not convinced we're actually out of. In fact I think we're heading for something worse. Government Is trying to distract everyone with the poxy Brexit thing and calling the election. Did anyone actually ask for either of them? It's all bollox mate. I don't have disdain for a democratic process but I do have disdain for this shower of so called leaders and figureheads who are just out for themselves.
Corbyn and May are just pawns in a fixed game.

My simplistic view is that when we have little, we worry about what's right for society more than what's right for us. When we get older, get more for ourselves and a family, we still worry about others, but generally are more selfish about what it will actually cost us to support the masses. It is therefore understandable that we lean to the left when young and start going the other way as we get older.

Plus, the young like to rebel again the establishment, which for many of our generation (in our 30s and 40s), were the 'evil tories'.

Can we go out yet?

To be honest, worrying about myself and my family led me to supporting Labour this time every bit as much as any touchy-feely collective sentiment. I want my son to get a proper education at the secondary school he's about to start and have a chance at university which won't knacker him financially. And I want my parents to enter old age in a country with a decent, free-at-the-point-of-use health service.

Nick Timothy: has resigned
From his statement

One can speculate about the reasons for this, but the simple truth is that Britain is a divided country: many are tired of austerity, many remain frustrated or angry about Brexit, and many younger people feel they lack the opportunities enjoyed by their parents’ generation.

Ironically, the Prime Minister is the one political leader who understands this division, and who has been working to address it

Fck me he can spin

Perhaps the young realised that their failure to vote en masse in the referendum cost them their future. In revenge, they turned on the Tories.

We now have a weak and wobbly government going into the most important negotiations the Uk has been involved in for 30 years. "Good deal for Britain"? Not very likely, is it.

Can Labour build on this and go on to win the next election ?
No need. The Tories are about to rip themselves apart. May has had to ditch her team (resigned she now has selfish and greedy Johnson, ambitious Amber Rudd and sneaky Hammond to watch her back.
She has apparently given Ruth Davidson assurances on GLBT rights (never trust a Tory Ruth). The DUP will want changes. Ruth Davidson's Scottish Tories have 12 seats, the DUP have 10.
With so many Tories scraping home with tiny majorities it's won't take many by-elections to upset the apple cart.

Strong and stable my arse.

It is of course your right not to engage, but I would suggest if that is the case turning up and spoiling your ballot paper. Show the political establishment that you are a vote to be won, if there was a viable alternative in your eyes. By not turning out, you're saying you don't care, and if you're not bothered they won't try to win your vote. It is why, up until this election, the young were always pilloried and underrepresented. You can rely on the grey vote to have one of the highest turnouts, while you could rely on the young not to bother on the day, as per the 2010 election where the 'Cleggmania' demonstrated in the polls was not reflected in the actual votes.
