Hornets at home today. on 11:53 - Jan 13 with 1831 views | 1907 | As soon as I walked in the ground on Saturday it was noticeable how much damage one game of rugby had done to the pitch. Quite worrying when you consider Winter has only just started
Hornets at home today. on 12:28 - Jan 13 with 1780 views | DiddyDave | Football is generally played through the middle third of the ground. Rugby League is generally played from wing to wing,so I can’t see much difference in damage to the pitch overall when Hornets play a home game. The fact that the RL season starts at the worst time of the year weather wise is the problem, but both codes have always played in the winter mud and rain come what may. It’s part of our game and I’m sure we’ve all seen some cracking games in very inclement conditions throughout the winter months. It’s the team that adapts to the conditions that usually prevails in either code.

Hornets at home today. on 16:56 - Jan 13 with 1633 views | mingthemerciless | Both teams have been playing on the same pitch for over 30 years. Before Summer Rugby both teams played a full season's first team matches on it at the same time. That's not counting other games played on it by both teams reserves, youth etc. It's only recently that the pitch has become a problem ? Why is that ? Hornets are having to play away from the ground for a large chunk of this season so the pitch can " finally " be fixed. Is that not enough ?

The pitch has been showing signs of wear and tear in patches virtually all season. The area along the goal line at the Pearl Street end and where we warm up has turned to mud months ago. There has been a relatively bare patch towards the Wilbutts stand in front of the Pearl Street stand. We had a game abandoned in the summer because of rain. Hornets have played on this pitch twice this year.

Hornets at home today. on 17:13 - Jan 13 with 1595 views | Koober1974 | Don't think the sand or Turkey shit has ever done the pitch any good, Hornets need to go and share with Rochdale Rugby Union. Spotland is not equipped for Rugby and Football. The cost will just keep increasing.
Hornets at home today. on 18:21 - Jan 13 with 1528 views | Thacks_Rabbits | Forgetting the historical track record of hornets in their various non paying guises, be it in the 90’s or under fat bastard from heywood it’s down to the football club to a certain extent for agreeing the ground share in order to own it, I suspect once we have the chance to get rid of the traditionally non paying, under supported, shambles they will be history. The pitch has always been shite in winter at Rochdale, hornets mostly unwelcome appearance certainly does not help, and obviously we now play a different style to the mud clogged hit it long to Hilditch/Laurence/Morris etc. Rugby could be played in a swamp and it generally would make little difference at hornets level, football obviously is different. The pitch is damaged hugely by rugby, but we agreed it so.....

You've still not answered why the pitch has become a problem in the last few years when both teams have been playing on it for 30 plus years without much trouble. Call me a cynic but it seems to have got a lot worse since the football club signed the deal with Hornets. Just saying.

It's not just recently the pitch has been a problem? Its probably more noticable these days because of the quality of other pitches up and down the leagues. Ever since we've been ground sharing the pitch has always deteriorated when both teams are playing on it - it's pretty obvious that 2 teams playing on a surface is going to make that surface worse than just 1 team playing on it. There's not really any solution other than replacing the drainage system and installing a hybrid pitch with part grass/part synthetic grass like you see in the Premier League but they cost hundreds of thousands to install and maintain - money we cant really afford in League 1. It's just one of those things.

Hornets at home today. on 10:39 - Jan 14 with 1152 views | mingthemerciless | As I understand it major work is taking place this summer on the pitch. That was the reason we were given when we were told Hornets couldn't use the pitch for 10 weeks in the middle of the season. You don't have be a genius to realise what effect this has on attendances. People who are regular fans find other things to do, especially in summer, and then find it hard to re-connect with the club. If the team isn't playing particularly well a run of consecutive away game that end in defeat isn't going to be much help in improving things. By time you get back to playing at home you find yourself deep in a relegation battle.

Bob and scrappy the greyhound not attending will probably take your attendance below 500! Hornets are a total shambles, have been for years, the 20k attendance money “stolen” circa 1985 was even laughed about by Dale employees back then! The pitch has always been awful, it was pre hornets and is still, but technology has move on since 1980 when swamps were ok in the lower league, of course hornets had an effect on the pitch, but we agreed it for now so it’s the clubs burden to carry! Hornets biggest mistake is not trying to get a join season ticket with the football club, get a relationship of sorts back and price it accordingly. At 50 quid a season for hornets share some fans would go and watch, I probably would if local, but for whatever reason this has never happened.

I rolled up for the recent Newcastle game. I saw plenty of Hornets fans in the queues and then in the ground. . Quite a few said to me " What are you doing MIng, the games not whilst tomorrow ! "

Yes I saw that the Hornets release talked about the concern over the deterioration of the pitch during the Law Cup game last weekend and that is in the interest of both clubs to try and protect the pitch as much as possible over the next few weeks I wonder whether we should hire some covers again (the ones used before the TV game). Can't cost that much for a couple of weeks of protection in what is a very wet period. We can't let a screwed up pitch be the reason we end up in the relegation zone!! Must be frustrating for Hornets though

There's obviously something seriously wrong with the drainage under pitch. We haven't had an excessive amount of rain on it this winter and it hasn't had an excessive amount of wear and tear yet a game scheduled for Sunday has no chance of being played. Ok, it was only a friendly so no real harm done. Let's pray for a dry and mild spring.

Pitch realistically needs digging up I think for the drainage to be sorted completely it'd need from May all the way through to the end of July - probably 13/14 weeks. 10 weeks to solve the problems isn't enough. Regarding the rain, the game played on Sunday should never have taken place the pitch had surface water on it at 6pm the previous night. A football match would have been off

If other pitches in the area were suffering in the same way I might agree with you, but they aren't . If there's a game called off in the North West you can bet your boots it will be the Rochdale game. I wasn't there on Sunday so I can't comment but I'd have expected any standing water to drain off over night. From what I'm told the pitch was good to go at kick off time.
Hornets at home today. on 15:59 - Jan 16 with 803 views | 49thseason | I have been saying for decades that the pitch needs a drainage trench around the perimeter. with the fall running towards to Wilbutts Lane / Sandy lane corner to connect into the main drain. The pitch drains can then connect to the perimeter trench and be unblocked from inside the trench if needed. The other option is to raise the pitch 18 inches but you would still need some sort of perimeter drainage system and there may not be enough run-off room for the players unless you also reduce the size of the pitch.

Tranmere for starters. What a rugby ref and a football ref deem playable are different. Ideally they'll never be a weekend where football and rugby are played sat then sun [Post edited 16 Jan 2020 16:15]
