Rochdale Council has little interest in sport, much less in RAFC. They have Millions in "reserves" but if now isnt the time to spend them you have to wonder when is. There have been several discussions about building an Academy space at Bowlee or in Heywood near the new motorway roundabout exit but it seems the rewards for building houses are bigger. Having said that you have to wonder if they intend to collect S106 (a payment in lieu of building recreation facilities so that the council can) money from the builders, and if not why not? Maybe its time to start asking our councillors some difficult questions...

Elections have been and gone. You wont hear from the vast majority of them until just before they are next up for election. Maybe there will be some 'drug fuelled' concert for them to get cancelled?

Not particularly important in the grander scheme of why having an academy is important, but one thing to consider is the fact that academy players do help to fill out the first-team squad numbers. Aside from Brierley, who won't be on huge wages and is (in my opinion anyway) the most talented player in our squad, we've also had Scanlon, Dos Santos and both Kellys feature in the squad so far this season and you have to imagine they'll all be on much lower wages than any players released by Premier League/Championship clubs would demand. Having those extra 3 or 4 very cheap options is a very handy side effect of the academy.

I don't think the role that the academy plays in improving the first-team's results should be undervalued either. In our two recent promotions we had the likes of Joe Thompson, Will Buckley, Jamie Allen (and Scott Hogan if I play hard and fast with what constitutes an academy graduate!) playing pivotal parts and that's without even taking into consideration the contributions of players like Tanser, Cannon, Camps, Morley, Matheson and others since that last promotion. Even with Brierley now, our first-team is definitely improved by the productivity of the academy.

Tangled up in blue.

Agreed. I don’t think the academy’s productivity has reduced, more the opportunities we’re giving to them. I still think Brierley could’ve been afforded more game time last season and you could argue the same could’ve been shown to Peter Thomas and Joe Dunne. The latter in particular was earmarked by BBM as someone who would make an impact, but obviously for whatever reason that changed once BBM left.
