Third Round Exit Record 08:06 - Jan 10 with 2084 views | ThaiHoop | Obviously it's been well documented that we ballsed it up in the 3rd round for the 51st time on Saturday. My initial thought was there's been 141 finals so we've gone out at first attempt on over a 3rd of our entries. But then I realised that of course we won't have played in all the FA Cups and even in the ones we have we haven't always made the 3rd round (a certain car manufacturer springs immediately to mind 😳). So I wondered if any statisticians out there can tell me how many times we've actually appeared in the 3rd round? I realise this will depress me even further but my curiosity is now piqued!!

Third Round Exit Record on 09:07 - Jan 10 with 1946 views | stowmarketrange | It shouldn’t be that hard as you only have to work out how many times we’ve reached at least round 4,which wouldn’t have been a lot before we started getting better at this football park in 1966-67. So I guess we’ve made the 4th round about 20-25 times in 56 years, and maybe once or twice pre 1966. The wiki page says we’ve reached at least the 4th round on 27 occasions. Well a brief count up tells me that, if I've looked correctly, we've played in the 3rd round 77 times and lost in it 51 times (and that's assuming that in the late 19th and early 20th century that getting to the quarter final meant you'd already played 3 rounds previously). Shocking!! 🙄 [Post edited 10 Jan 2023 9:34]

In the very early years of the 20th century and the last decade of the 19th there were only three rounds before the semi finals. This changed in the 1905-06 competition when a fourth round was added. The FA Cup as we know it these days with six rounds before the semi finals, evolved in the 1925-26 season. [Post edited 10 Jan 2023 12:31]

Yes Camberley, comparisons can only go back to 25/26. Of course, our third round record is absymal, but part of the reason for sittimg in first position is that we've played in that round more often than Plymouth. That doesn't excuse us losing more often than clubs like Millwall, Birmingham, Stoke etc! I've not checked, but since the 67/68 season we've played in the third round 55 times (automatic qualification) & I would doubt that we've won more than 20% of those. Indeed, we've won 60% of the last 5 years! My conclusion is that this record is historically awful & not a recent phenomenom. As an example, Ian Holloway has managed the club for 7 FA Cup matches & lost all of them. Gerry Francis might have a better record, but it wouldn't be by much.

We lost in the 1st round 3 years on the trot in the early 2000’s,including Vauxhall motors,so you have to take those 3 years off your total.
Third Round Exit Record on 11:32 - Jan 10 with 1666 views | PlanetHonneywood | I'm neither a statistician nor a mathematician. However, I'm prepared to stick my cock on the block and say that the final sum will be, as some more analytical than moi will conclude this: QPR + FA Cup ÷ 3rd Round = Fookin' sh1te! Third Round Exit Record on 12:19 - Jan 10 with 1560 views | DannyPaddox | I’ve seen us win 7 times in the 3rd Round. I was surprised it was that much. Southend Wealdstone Cardiff MK Franchise Leeds Swansea Rotherham. An average of just over 1 a decade. 3 of them coming in the last 5 years. It can happen. [Post edited 10 Jan 2023 12:22]

I thought I had Stowmarket! 55 seasons since 67/68, but 52 in the third round was what I meant to post! [Post edited 10 Jan 2023 12:57]
