Norwich Reflection 17:15 - Jan 1 with 5970 viewsbluenwhite10

Really poor performance against a very poor side and got what we deserved nothing.

Played like they just rolled from a NYE party, and fair play to Norwich they wanted it a bit more and slowed the game down when it was needed.

I have to say every dead ball hit the 1st man and in general every ball into the box was poor.

Only thing worse than the performance was the state of the pitch.

I do appreciate it is a lot of games in a short space of time but I think it is changes for changes sake at the moment in general, but that seems to be across all teams.

We’ve been rumbled.

Yes , I’m afraid you are right .

We look out of ideas and out of gas .
JS seems entrenched in this 442 because it worked for a while but how many times does he have to sit and watch our 2 in midfield struggle because they are outnumbered? Our 2 ‘wide’ men with no space, our second striker , Kone today , Field (!!!!!) on Monday be a passenger for 90 mins.
At some stage you have to do something else or it’s lunacy .
He has eroded some credit after the West Brom fiasco but we would have let it slide if we had won today . Or Maybe not even win, maybe just look vaguely look footballers ?
We must be the only football team on the planet to wallop a team 4-1 and then every squad member seems to lose confidence and belief from it . Bonkers!
They should have been absolutely buzzing and chomping at the bit since that game but they couldn’t have looked more opposite .
Back to the club DNA, the ‘standards’, the mentality of this team ….and the team 1 year, 3 years, 5 years , 10 years ago .
We say it often , but there is something not quite right at this football club.

Just a side note which I think I’ll be on my own mostly but I want to point it out .
Romarn Burrell has been great …..for what he is .
He has a tremendous attitude and work ethic and gets us up the pitch with his press .
He has a knack of being in the right place at the right time for his 7 or 8 tap ins this season. That’s not a criticism . Many strikers come here and are still looking for the ‘right place /right time’ see Dykes etc.

But .
His last 3 appearances he’s looked shot. Like when Armstrong used to tear around chasing the ball until someone told him to stop wasting energy .
His press has stopped . He can’t do it . He has barely got into a sprint since we played Leicester.
And if he can’t do that then he is a very average footballer….at this time .
Now he is young with time on his side still, with lots to learn and it’s a big step up , for him
and Kone. But his all round game , with the ball is pretty poor at the moment .

My overall point being that it’s now a bit unfair to really rely on Romarn to carry our attacking threat on his own. He’s been flogged to death and is now a passenger along with Kone which is another problem JS has created .
These are potentially good players but they are league one players stepping up and they have really looked like it recently .
JS must now think about changing our system because hoof ball over the top for someone who can’t get up to a sprint is going to see us in a relegation battle pretty quickly .

Oh and if i read one more thread about “will Chair get into this team?”, I’ll scream .

If anything was clear today , it was that he is still by far and away our most creative, industrious and available player when teams are as stubborn as Norwich were today .
Our 4 wingers were garbage today . All of them

Excellent post, agree with all of this.

I agree with that too. The effort that is being put in is being severely hampered by the lack of energy due to too many matches and some players playing too many minutes.

well i have asked why have we been so poor the last 3 games? we seem slow, no tempo , no intensity for games we were expecting more from, no easy games but beating brum and wba at home, we had a buzz and seemed alive in this league now seem lost .
is the rotating the team actually causing issues? ie players cannot form a partnership as always someone else next to me?
no plan b? today we had a lot of the ball in the first 5 mins, we had some corners and looked on top, norwich handled it and got their chance and took it .

I think goal scoring is a problem. We had two up front and still couldn't score in normal time. If you can't score you are waiting to lose, as the opposition will always get chances. In fact if we can't defend we pretty much have to rely on goal scoring.

Creating chances is our problem, how many decent chances did we create for Kone & Burrell yesterday? So you think why? And you look at the Wings or Centre of Midfield......

Giving good possession & key passes to our Wingers was a problem, again why.....

We struggled to transition the ball from defence as the Midfielders, paticularly Madsen didn't show for the ball and in the absence of JCS or Morrison as Left Sided Centre Half, the only option to move the ball forward was via Dunne & Mbengue,

Cook (like Harry Maguire) is very very limited when playing as a a Left Sided Centre Back and cannot bring the ball out, Madsen ( & Hadyn) didn't show for the ball and as a result we never had any control in the game.

And Mbengue is a liability at Right Back as too impulsive and buys the dummy & feint every time.

And although it didn't work out for him Morgan again showed he could with time be the future as showed the courage others lacked in wanting the ball, which was why Cufuentes rightly backed him.

Id revert to Field & Varane (or Hadyn) as the holding two & play Morgan in an advanced Central Midfield role in front of them as he played to good effect before tiring last year.

We need to freshen things up and we need more characters like Dunne who don't hide.

Christmas was Leicester, and Leicester was Christmas.
That’s us. That’s our culture and our mentality. Staff members on the touch line at full time.
Unless we can persuade the Sheff Wed manager to put a Cifuentes mask on im starting to worry about that one.

Starting to worry about that one Clive?

I've had the 4 Christmas/New Year games down as no wins for a long time! If we'd been playing Hull, Preston, Wrexham etc, I'd have been far more confident.

Today I thought Dunne was our only outfield player that could be considered for a rating of 5 & that might be pushing it. Perhaps Barry Bannan can wind up our players enough on Sunday for a positive reaction!

We did this after Derby home last season and also after Luton away, pat ourselves on the back look at how good we are then didn't win again for 2 months.

I think you are right when you say we are hampered by a "lack of energy". Generally we seem to do better after a full week between one match and the next, Leicester and the WBA home game the recent examples. Other teams seem to handle the ridiculous tight schedule better than we do. Hopefully the Club are looking at what they are doing better, Williams area of responsibility I think.

This is my fear too.

Poll: Where will we finish up next season?

It's always a worry when you see arguments break out between our own players on the pitch. Hands thrown in the air, exasperation, accusatory pointing, angry shouts. Everyone looked tired, it was New Years Day (you think they don't celebrate NYE in Norwich?), but we are a team and for our survival we need to play like one.

That is JS's problem and he needs to deal with that first.

Dunne has personal pride and always gives his best, its why I've always been such a supporter of his, as when others hide or start pointing the fingers at others, you know with him the team comes first, Bannan seems to have these same traits,

If Bannan plays on Sunday, watch how throughout the game he is looking and wanting to receive the ball,

I'm not just digging out Nicholas here (as he has no doubt improved significantly) but if this team is to progress, being involved in the game for 10 minutes and a spectator for the following 20 minutes will not do,

For those who have been totally won over by Nicolas, watch these two closely on Sunday, see who drifts out of the game for long periods and seems to lack the desire to show for the ball consistently over 90 minutes, this is'nt about ability, its about desire,

Hopefully you can tell me I've got this wrong.

That's our game plan though, out of possession and high press requires energy and particularly Burrrell's energy and he is running on empty at the moment
