Just to say I was sad to hear that Sonny Rollins - the ‘Saxophone Colossus’ - has died at the age of 95 (the day before what would have been Miles Davis’ 100th birthday). Got to see him only the once - at the Barbican in 2006. He held the audience spellbound for two hours. The very best of America.
One of the last surviving artists who played with most of the other legends in their prime: what a career! Think my favourite albums are Way Out West (maybe because of the cover) and A Night At The Village Vanguard as well as Saxophone Colossus of course.

I love the idea that every show he played was unique, even during a residency, and that he almost never repeated himself. He also had an encyclopaedic memory for tunes and decided on the spur of the moment one night at Ronnie Scott’s to close his show with every song that came into his head with ‘goodnight’ in the title. The story goes that he was still at it when the cleaners arrived in the small hours to sweep up the club.

Very sad, but what an inventive musician. I think I remember (memory not what it used to be!) seeing him at the Lyceum probably in the 80s - an evening of endless melodies woven together in a continuous stream. If anyone can confirm that would be great.
Good to see some jazz fans among the Rs faithful. At one of my earliest games, probably the famous 75-76 season, there was a guy standing on the loft terrace holding a Coltrane album - a sure sign that we attracted 'cool' supporters!
