Bradford obviously a very good side and a cut above where we are currently.
Jenkins / Petit and Hayes all out for some time is a difficult obstacle to overcome but overcome we must.
Some encouraging passages of play but second best all afternoon. The players look like they are still getting used to the new style of play.
Brown chance and the Mani header could have given us a chance but it just was not meant to be.. now we have a clear run at League 2.. hoping for an encouraging performance on Saturday and a winning start. |
If we are playing with 2 wingers, we cant play with just one target man plus the other winger getting into in the box. For me, Rodney isnt a second centre forward or whatever name you want to put on a position that plays off the target man, he pops up in lots of places and it must be a nightmare for Mani to try and knock the ball down him, equally he seems to go missing in action too often with long spell not affecting the game...
The comparison of the two last games is interesting, ..vs Tranmere we made 626 passes with 89% success whereas at Bradford 380 passes with 78% success... 40% less passes and 11% lower success rate... Clearly Bradford closed us down quicker and more effectively, you would expect a better team to do that , so I don't think the Bradford match is particularly useful as a marker for the coming season.
Assuming we play more Tranmeres than Bradfords this season, we should be able to control more of the game and keep the ball which obviously reduces opposition opportunities to hurt us, especially with a more settled defence. The worry is in the "goals for" column and the progress of the Dieseruvwe-Brown partnership , they should get decent service from the wings but the partnership has to gel .. assuming it is a partnership that is envisaged and not "either or" plus Rodney or Hendo,

What formation are you saying we should play that would aid retaining possession?
The ball doesn’t go into the centre forward as much as previously due to the change in set up, the biggest issue is having options for the man on the ball and getting the ball out to the wide players effectively because they’ve shown to be dangerous.
Unless we decide to go more direct, we need to get more bodies in the middle of the field. Not adding a second centre forward. |  |

We’ve played wingers in every game so far and whoever has played there has done quite well. The issues are not a personnel one.
Meant to mention before, but isitme made a great point about TAR - his performances have gone some way to address concerns around him as a standard right back. Done well so far. | |
