Just a warning for any exiles heading to COA today, avoid Sudden at all costs. As the locals know, the major junction redesign works has reduced the lanes and the traffic flow considerably and it won't cope with the crowds today. Roch Valley after the game will take forever to clear. It will be like this until the end of the year.
So avoid junction 20 at all costs and come off the motorway at Milnrow or Heywood and make your way from there. Safe travels everyone. The weather is perfect [Post edited 22 Aug 9:24]

On another note Sudden / Tesco is taking forever to complete just hope there are massive improvements to the traffic flow when the work is finished.

The Sudden debacle is just ridiculous and all for the sake of a cycle path ( sorry, " active travel route") no one will ever actually use, certainly not into Manchester.on a wet weekday morning when you can go on the bus for £2 now...... The work that was scheduled to finish in early 25 was extended to " after the school holidays" in Summer 2025, and is now going on until after Christmas this year.. Tesco will be sueing for millions... Its almost as if they are trying to put every business in Rochdale out of business... £15m quidhas been spent and counting...but in the immortal words of Castleton Councillor Billy Shearing .." its OK its not Rochdale money its coming from Greater Manchester". Apparently Burnham got the cycle lane bug from a visit to Amsterdam and Copenhagen where rainfall is half of what we get and notably flatter

The worst thing about the chaos at Sudden is the braindead decision to simultaneously do other roadworks elsewhere, eg Dane Street, and on the approach to the motorway in Heywood, which is nearly gridlocked all day. Plus resurfacing Queens Park Road as well.
It'd be lovely to have someone in charge of road planning who could have foreseen that redesigning Sudden would put extra pressure on Heywood and therefore delay both Heywood jobs until Sudden is done. I bet whoever makes these decisions doesn't drive! |  |

It isn't about cycle paths, it is about materially increasing the traffic flow at junctions at Sudden and use new sensor technology to manage light phasing to optimise throughput. Hence why there will be extra lanes for cars at different junctions. But it is happening because the Gtr Man Combined Authority bid for the cash. Once you bid for cash it has to be spent.
It could be worse - they were supposed to start on the Oldham Road corridor next during autumn. At least an RMBC Councillor has stepped in to ask for that to be delayed until Sudden is complete | | | |
