Its almost as if they ask Warner for his preferred XI. Ah well, i will stick my DVD of The Final Test in (Another Warner dominating the batting) and hope for a miracle.
RIP on 19:09 - Dec 25 with 1363 views | D_Alien | Remember watching footage from down under in 70/71 when he led his team off the pitch due to missiles being thrown at our boundary fielders. It paid off, and he became one of the few captains to succeed on Aussie turf Looked nothing like an athlete, more like someone's grumpy uncle and his playing stats don't do him justice, but he really was a winner RIP [Post edited 25 Dec 2021 19:10]

RIP on 19:41 - Dec 25 with 1311 views | EllDale | Iit’s a shame in some ways that English cricket no longer produces battlehardened, bloody minded northern professionals with a winning mentality. Blokes not scared to ruffle a few feathers. Think of players like Len Hutton, Brian Close, Geoff Boycott, Fred Trueman and Illingworth himself. Joe Root might be from Yorkshire but the similarity ends there.
RIP on 21:14 - Dec 25 with 1203 views | 49thseason | I was once on a cricket tour of the Midlands and we stayed at the Grand Hotel in Leicester on the Saturday night following a match against Soar Valley. As we arrived at the Hotel, Sussex were just registering.... John Snow, Tony Grieg.. and the rest. There followed a very drunken night that ended at about 2 AM with most of the Sussex team and ours very much the worse for wear after some sort of drinking game that involved using a large vase as a wicket. Sussex were due to play Leicester on the Sunday. The next morning, the dining room was a very hushed area with lots of bad heads and very light breakfasts with the exception on the magisterial figure of Raymond Illingworth, Leicester Captain in shirt and tie, munching a full English and casually turning pages of the Sunday papers. Someone said hello to,him and received short shrift with a "noisy buggers" in our general direction. A glance at the ruined Sussex team told him all he needed to know, today was going to be a good day! On my way out I asked my new pal "Snowy" how he was feeling.." bloody awful" Later in the day we managed to phone the Sussex dressing room " hows it going lads,"? ... " nearly over" sad a weary voice. Apparently Sussex batted first and scored 80, Ray would be rubbing his hands but " Snowy" was in a bad mood and needed to lie down, Sussex bowled Leicester out for just 30. Happy days, probably unrepeatable now. Goodnight Raymond. Sleep well.

He transformed Leicestershire into a top side winning the championship and one day cups. None of the blokes you mention went to public school… unlike the current tourists (with a notable exception from burnley). Its become a niche sport sadly.
