Would it be worth reminding or indeed educating Mr Burnham where the movement first started?

Labour Party founded 1900, Co-operative Party founded 1917 as both parties basically agreed on policy formal ties between the 2 were set out in the Cheltenham agreement of 1927. At the last election there were 43 Labour And Co-operative Party MP' elected to parliament. Andy Burnham is the first Labour/Co-operative Prime Minister.

We're all justifiably proud of the independence of thought and action which the Rochdale Pioneers embodied, James You're right, in that it shouldn't be forgotten and the same spirit still exists to this day, now embodied by the Ogdens, and indeed, many of our own fans, evidenced in recent times. Our MP, a Dale fan (not a pretend one) has been promoted to a junior ministerial role by Burnham - the first time this has ever happened I'm just not sure we need to be "endorsed" by anyone [Post edited 1 Oct 19:07]

Appointed as a Junior Minister whilst our MP yes, Tony Lloyd was a Minister in the Foreign Office prior to becoming Rochdale's MP. Its amazing, (apologies for manager speak), that such an old constituency (1832) has had so little Ministerial representation despite having such high profile MP's as Cyril Smith and Richard Cobden....Nearly 200 years as a constituency and no influence from the front bench must be some sort of record. Cobden was offered a Baronetcy (inherited Knighthood) following the repeal of the Corn Laws and a place in the Privy Council, but he rejected both and remained Mr. Richard Cobden. It's believed he also rejected 2 offers from both Lord John Russell and Lord Palmerston to sit in the Cabinet. In terms of the House of Lords: Tony Lloyd was given a posthumous life peerage. Baron Lloyd of Brewick Joel Barnett MP for Heywood and Royton was a life peer ...Baron Barnett John Kemp, 1st Viscount of Rochdale he inherited his Barony from his father (a hereditary title tied to the local Kemp textile manufacturing family - as in Kelsall and Kemp), John Kemp was elevated to a Viscountcy in 1960.

But the principles of the co operative movement have little to do with the ownership or running of the Dale. When it was tried by Hornets it was ultimately a failure and both Hornets and Dale are now back in the hands of concentrated ownership with little if any accountability to the broader fan bases. They might be ‘good people’ but that is not the same as the spirit and principles of cooperation.
