Our planning for next season 13:38 - Dec 30 with 6491 viewsRAFCBLUE

The note on what the quantum of the playing budget is for this season made me think what next season might look like, regardless of whether we are in League 1 or League 2 and who our manager might be.

I think the Board and in particular our CEO have a few big things to sort out on the playing side of things.

Excluding loans and youth players whoever is manager in the Summer is shedding 14 players out of the 25 we have. I'm not entirely sure any of them will be kept or choose to stay - see below.

Currently contracted to June 2021 - 7 players:
Jay Lynch, Jim McNulty, Eoghan O'Connell, Jimmy Keohane, Jimmy Ryan, Matt Done, Kwadwo Baah.

Currently contracted to June 2022 - 4 players:
Brad Wade, Luke Mathewson, Oli Rathbone, Aaron Morley.

That leaves:

Paul McShane - out of contract in January; short term fix for injuries but injury prone.

Josh Lillis - widely expected to leave.

Ryan McLaughlin - only played twice this season.

Joe Dunne - only played once this season.

Stephen Dooley - I'd expect to us to offer a contract.

Jordan Williams - I expect to join Bolton on a free transfer.

Callum Camps - I expect to be offered a contract here and by Bolton. Eligible to leave for free.

Lewis Bradley - mainly sub/backup player. I don't think we will offer a contract.

Harrison Hooper - mainly sub/backup player. I don't think we will offer a contract.

Calvin Andrew - I don't think that we will offer a deal on the same terms as Calvin has currently and he will leave.

Aaron Wilbraham - I don't think that we will offer a deal on the same terms as Aaron has currently and he will leave.

Matty Gilliam - we will offer a deal; under 24 and retains a value.

Fabio Tavares - we will offer a deal; under 24 and retains a value.

Ian Henderson - the toughest one. One of the greatest servants this club has ever seen, aside from Gary Jones and will be 35 when the season ends. I think we will offer a deal but Ian is financially secure outside of football and is probably ahead of most 35 year olds period. I expect Keith Hill to offer him a contact and that will be Hendo's test. We might have to decide if we want to compete with Bolton's offer for wages. Will our CEO blink?

In summary, I think this is one of the biggest end of seasons for the club in the last 10 years. I can't think of a time where in the last decade such a large proportion of key players were out of contract and they might not stay.

The end of an era? Possibly, but it does put the ball in the court of the current Board.

Season ticket sales for next year depend on the product that might be on offer. Regardless of division, there is a big question mark of who might be here to play whether they are a fan favourite or not.

If all of those 11 do leave it leaves a huge budget available I think; assuming next season we offer the same budget or better than this campaign.

It also assumes that we do not sell any of the 11 contracted to balance the books.

What do we think?

That might have been interesting, with Calvin still on the books.

I wouldn’t be too unhappy if Calvin left as a result of Clarke arriving.
It’s harsh on a great guy but he’s not producing.
Mind you there were no takers for his services this time last year so I can’t see anyone being interested now.
