What heroism.
What a futile campaign that was, one that tarnished Churchill’s reputation.
110 years today though?

It did tarnish his political reputation at the time, so he put on a uniform and went to fight on the Western Front, where he proved to be very effective

I attended the dawn service at Anzac Cove two years ago. Id highly recommend it to anyone interested in history. The topography of the place has to be seen to be believed. Pure stupidity on the part of the generals.

It’s an essential visit for a lot of Australians on gap years/extended holidays.
Today is a bank holiday down under I think.

Yes public holiday in Aus and NZ, dawn services at 4.30am in most suburbs always well attended even in the rain.

Every sporting event in Australia this weekend has its own pre game Anzac ceremony and traditional Anzac Day fixtures (Easts v St George in rugby league and collingwood v essendon in aussie rules). Over 90,000 at MCG today for the latter.

I think you are confusing Churchill with someone else. as PM during the war he was second to none, but as a 'soldier' he was clueless. galipoli and the Dardenelles cost hundreds of pointless casualties. as Lord of the admiralty he was too tight to ensure the british navy was short of ammunition-almost costing us defeat at Jutland. And as for his ineffective time in the Boer war...best not to go there.

You need to read a bit more deeply

His experiences during the Boer War, and subsequently as commander of a unit on the front line in France were the making of him. He was loved - genuinely - by those he commanded in WW1 since he took care over their general wellbeing (which was largely ignored by most of those charged with command) therefore enabling them to fight effectively

The mistakes he made in those arenas as a politician informed him when taking up the burden of PM in 1940 - he learned from them

I suggest you learn a bit more, too

I attended our local Parade. Horses, Pipe band, around 500 marchers, and an estimated 1000 spectating. Completed with a fly past of a couple of Spitfires and a Typhoon. Pretty good effort for a town of similar size to Milnrow. Excellent sunny weather as well.

WW1 was a war of two halves for Winnie. He had to resign after the disastrous Dardanelles campaign. Then found his way in France.
