Child poverty 2 child benefit cap abolished

I'd be interested to know more about the demography of those benefiting from Rachel's largess, and in particular what proportion of recipients have a long-time record of past contributions (one of the buzz words in the latest supposedly tougher Labour approach to welfare). A few clues can be found here. It is GB News mind, but the Guardian and Indy tend to fall silent on such matters.

Some of the mental health conditions discovered in the late 20th century probably do exist as real psychological disorders. but at the same time there does seem to be a drift towards medicalisation of life problems across many domains. I came across a recent book on ADHD that may be worth reading.

The game I mentioned earlier in the thread with the referee dying was a match between Exeter and Stockport in September 1972, I checked on the web and the official collapsed in the 68th minute.

(scroll to 3rd report)

By April 2001 when something very similar happened in a match between Southend and Mansfield a referee collapse near half-time led to the game being abandoned.

As I said, changing times, but I am unsure whether for the better or worse.

Swansea City v Oxford United : Match day thread
at 17:08 6 Dec 2025

Very good result but only a so-so display in my opinion, and one that fell away badly in the 2nd half. I want to see us scoring from well-worked moves, where the goals are down to attacking excellence rather than mistakes. Our first goal was aided by a goalkeeping error, while Tymon's speculative shot was one he would only hit like that once in a blue moon. So these were valuable goals, but not coming from a template we can re-produce every week. Eom played well and Galbraith was solid most of the time, while not as accurate with his passing as on his best days. I didn't think the subs added a great deal, although Casey was solid. He was only only one who I'd say made a case for inclusion in the starting eleven. In mitigation the awful weather may have affected our passing game after the interval.

I know this is likely to be a tragic story for the person concerned, but can't help wondering whether abandoning a game in these circumstances is something to do with today's less resilient society. Was there a feeling that a serious health issue or death was so upsetting that players and spectators would be too badly affected to watch the game conclude? I remember a game at Exeter years ago when the ref blew a forlorn blast on his whistle and collapsed. He had suffered a fatal cardiac arrest but, after a brief pause to find a substitute official, the game carried on with a linesman as referee. Changing times I suppose.

After a nervous start when the Swans looked dire we finally clicked into gear. As others have said, we need to keep going now, rather than try to sit on a lead.

Two second half goals from Watford after they trailed 1-2 earlier was a very good result for us. With the Portsmouth match abandoned, the focus shifts to the two Sheffield team games and our game.

I hadn't been keeping up and was surprised to see our former idol playing for Salford City. That is a long way down from Liverpool and AC Milan, but obviously Fabio loves his football and wants to keep going as long as he can.

Edit, That is if he comes off the subs bench.

That caught my eye too (see earlier in thread). The mind boggles when one considers the possible intersection of benefits in a household with one unemployed and disabled husband, three wives (possibly with their own health issues) and a large brood of kids from the three mothers. At the extreme I imagine it could happen.

We debate the fairness and affordability of increased benefits for additional children, but I wonder if any of us knew that "additional spouses" (i.e. wives) also got a benefits uplift.

A story in the i paper today suggests there was a bit more to the resignation and that Rachel gave Hughes a push because of the content of his reports showing she had told fibs.

Was Richard Hughes pushed into resigning because of the OBR's leaky IT system or was the reality that Rachel sacked him because she did not like him exposing her fibs? The i Paper is running a story today (behind a paywall) saying it was the latter.

How can Scotland afford this?

Just off the top of my head:

1. Higher historic per capita allocations under the Barnett Formula than England or Wales.

2. Nice extra wedge pushed Scotland's way in the Budget.

Our Defence
at 16:57 30 Nov 2025

I would have said that of our back four Key is the one who is struggling, with Burgess still not settling to the extent we would have hoped, and Cabango and Tymon solid at this level. In the five across the back configuration Casey has done okay, and will improve with experience. Vig is a good keeper and (as a former amateur keeper myself) I think his alleged weakness on crosses is exaggerated. None of the three WBA goals came from headed goals, and the one on Tuesday came from a very deep cross where the failure seemed to me to lie with the defenders beyond the far post. To me the present problems lie with the two defenders mentioned above and - just as much - the failure of the midfield to get back to effectively aid the back line.

Billy Bonds
at 14:43 30 Nov 2025

Still Billy Bond stayed with the club he loved for most of his career, and probably could have got a lucrative move if he had desired one. Few players do that these days, and I have always thought that there is a different kind of reward - in terms of a kind of reputational capital - for those who do show loyalty. We have our own legends and Billy has that status for the West Ham faithful.
