Thanks Clive, I’d managed to forget Kone managing to miss the touchline from the kick off, truly a portent. I agree on the ref too, it was shame the penny didn’t drop that if you’re getting nothing for diving, maybe stop diving. Unfortunately his career will be held back by the fact that he’ll never be allowed to referee an Arsenal game.
Burnley, dear God, if you were looking to attempt a promotion challenge, you wouldn’t touch any of this lot - faint hearts or old legs. They all look like they want to be anywhere else, but who’d have them? |

I thought Kamara was good for the first 70 minutes, apart from his complete refusal to shoot. He must have been sick of the ball in the first half, he was taking it off Burnley so easily in the first half. He tired and they passed better in the second.
The frustrating thing about last night is that Burnley were so atrocious in the first half. It wasn’t that they set up to wall off their box and work hard frustrating us, they were a lethargic rabble, but we cluttered up the middle and tried to play pinball passing in small areas when there was no need, they were standing off waiting for someone else to do something. We should have been stretching them out and running at them to draw them in and create space that way. To be fair to them, they actually made an effort to run around and keep the ball in the second. |

The lack of flexibility in our approach frustrated me tonight. The no look instant flicks round the corner are a great way to open up a team trying to swarm the man receiving the ball, but with Burnley largely standing off waiting for someone else to do some running meant the balls into space generally went straight to a surprised defender. Yet we persisted with the tactic even though we changed some of the personnel in the second half.
Burnley left huge amounts of space on their left, but a combination of Adamson’s timidity about getting too far forward and Vale’s sluggishness meant we didn’t trouble them there at all. At least Cirkin was more adventurous. It was crying out for Smyth to go wide right for a few minutes and try to take them on, but it didn’t happen. |

I didn’t know much about her, but it’s an incredibly sad story. Reminiscent of Lillian Board, who died in 1970, barely two years after winning an Olympic silver and a year after a European gold. She was only 22. I’m not sure what it means that deadly illness can creep up on athletes in their prime so swiftly, except perhaps they accept daily discomfort as part of the price of their success. I was reading about Maurice Doyle on Wiki, and the similar searches at the bottom had Jimmy Carter (surely been mentioned?) and Bobby Bowry. I dimly remember him as a skinny, lanky Palace player but he played many more games later for Millwall and Colchester, well over 300 league games in total. I never knew he was another QPR junior, never made the first team. |

I remember a furore on here when we released an academy striker called Ricky Sappleton, when he went on to have a trial at Liverpool before signing for Leicester. According to Wiki, he played on game for them, had lots of loans and a spell at Macclesfield, then nearly a decade circling the M25 in non-league. |

It was. It is amazing how many of the principals are still going, but perhaps it was because I was so young when I saw it that I thought they were older than they actually were. I rewatched it recently and Bernard Hill was in it for about two minutes, he’s the soldier that finds Claudius hiding after the murder of Caligula and declares him Emperor. He only died two years ago.
Mrs S saw Siân Phillips at the Orange Tree in Richmond last year. She shuffled on, drawled an approximation of her lines, and had the audience eating out of her hand. |

That reminds me of a piece in the News Quiz from the second Gulf War. The Army had issued a briefing about Basra, describing it as a port city, similar to Southampton. A squaddie complained, “It’s a dirty, smelly dump, the whores are ugly and everyone’s trying to kill us. It’s much more like Portsmouth.” |
