In the Omniturf era, there was one home game, there was a home game when the temperature was -8. Two pairs of tracky-bottoms and I still shivered non-stop through the game. |

I think a joust would be preferable to another QPR - Preston game. |

I remember the corrugated iron tunnel from the railway halt through the allotments to the away end in the 80s, like we were going to a Stalag! There was a frustrating period in the early 80s when both clubs were on the up but we just couldn’t beat them. Their football was pretty grim under Taylor, but Venables couldn’t find the antidote and they did have John Barnes. They were press darlings as the “family club” helped by Taylor and Elton’s profile, which grated on me as a punky herbert but which I have a lot of appreciation for now when the alternatives were singing about the Munich air disaster, unemployment or threatening to kill people. Johnny Byrne broke the spell when he scored in the Milk Cup there after Paul Barron saved a penalty. They rolled over every time for a while after that. [Post edited 2 Jan 9:36]

Just winding down from a night on the Sherry in front of United (boo!) and the darts (hooray). Dry not sweet today but there are plenty of days of Christmas left. |

Stephane Guivarc’h clearly a much better player. World Cup winner (6 of his 14 caps but none of his errrr one goals), French and Scottish League winner, Scottish Cup, League Cup AND Intertoto Cup winner. Take that Harry Kane, you peasant. [Post edited 30 Dec 2024 16:31]

Fair play to Morgan Fox, I thought he was ready for the knacker’s yard after that Portsmouth calamity but he was good for us today. |

Smartphones have undermined the value of experience as in other things, but the pound is mysteriously stronger than it was then. Local prices have been rising for the first time in over 30 years, but now you only have to knock off three noughts and multiply by five to get the £ prcice, of knock off two noughts and halve it. Cardless payment prevalent in almost every area except public transport where you generally have to buy a ticket from a machine with cash…the tap and go terminals are for their Oyster equivalent only. Look for the gates that have a little slot to put your ticket it and remember to pick it up again. The documentary “Salaryman” on (I think) Amazon Prime is a great introduction of the Tokyo I know pretty well. [Post edited 23 Dec 2024 14:11]

Yesterday second half seemed to be the first time Nardi went all in on Begovic’s diagonal punt to Jimmy on the touchline after seeing Kolli get dispossessed so often back to goal. Not pretty but it gets us the ball in the opposition half more often than not. |

On the subject of muscle, Kolli can’t really play as a back to goal lone striker. Time and again in the first half he was first to the ball but just lifted off it by strong defenders. Top marks for willing effort and I was delighted for him when he scored but it was noticeable that the goal was built around him rather than through him. It’s been Hobson’s Choice over the last few weeks making our form all the more remarkable but I think we’ll be even stronger with Chair, Frey and Paal back in the squad. Paal’s corners so much better than the last couple of seasons too. [Post edited 22 Dec 2024 12:03]

I was a bit frustrated for and by Saito today. He got very little ball to his feet in their half but I also think he drifted about so much he was hard for the others to locate. He didn’t have much influence on the game today. |
