what is more Exciting
at 19:56 26 Jun 2024

A young Wilkins was a young exciting prospect, 18 year
captain of second division Chelsea who won promotion to the top division, only to see that flare coached out of him to fit a team structure, seems that England's coaching really is so risk adverse that such players do not show their best qualities at international level seems to restrict forward thinking midfielders more than most.

Left side totally ineffective Trippier not willing or able to attack down the spaces that opened up for him, safe option to play the ball backwards resulting in pedestrian football which made it easy for a competent defensive to stifle. The British handbook of how to play safe, resulting in not use the skill sets of players available effectively, think most of us would think Southgate hasn't got the balance between attacking football and a solid defence.
Hope in the knockout stages the quality of England penalty taking had improved.

Nathan Tjoe-A-On set to leave?
at 13:35 24 Jun 2024

Seems we had a moment of panic, Tymon, Pedersen, Tjoe-A-On and even Humphreys to cover for the leaving Manning, ending up with surplus to requirements

Excellent game of football, Belgium looked a different team compared to their first game, amazing what happens when you up the tempo in your game but even then at one nil Romania could have got back in the game with a bit more composure in the final third, second goal kills the game off, It will be interesting to see how the group ends up qualification wise as it is wide open.

Didn't Coleman inherit his Welsh team from Speed similarly Page took over from Giggs, both Speed and Giggs setting the team for Coleman's and Page's teams to qualify for major ninternational competitions, would either of them had their success if they hadn't taken over well set up teams.
Coleman and Page had their good runs for the team, history now, time to look to the future.

Southgate set out the team to ensure they gained the point meaning that they more or less qualify for the knockout stages but it really doesn't build confidence within the team as to how they play when trying to press forward, big gaps all over the park to be exploited by the opposition and dropping deeper and deeper, we have seen the results of that with the Swans inviting more and more pressure with little or no control of the game and inevitably conceding goals.
Even if you control the ball deep in your own half there has tobe a concerted effort to get the ball quickly with a high tempo

The u21s or younger players need to be given chances to step up to the first team more often, what very little I saw of the U21s it did look as if they are playing by numbers Congreve in the first game he was always working hard looking to find space also by coming inside leaving room for Joe Thomas to step up wide players standing out from the rest, Congreve did need to keep a closer look at his defensive game , the second game he played up top and was all at sea.
Until these youngsters get a good run out with the first team it is hard to tell if they will sink or swim, learn by their mistakes or not progress, as we saw with a young Guehi he didn't initially cover himself in glory and had to bide his time in the squad to become a first choice player.
This year do we sacrifice one or two points to youthful errors to reap the rewards in the future?

Not many called me Dick but I now realise that I might have upset one or two as captian of the team but it might have been they just didn't like me anyway. I did stick my oar in where it didn't belong at times, you would think I would learn but alas no

The build up for a lots of team events is almost unbearable time for some new presenters, me thinks and ones not looking over their shoulders everytime something not politically correct gets brought up in jest or discussion.
A couple of minutes before kick off is the preferred viewing time now.

No sure about how good his passing is given the number of passes he actually makes, you would expect any player to produce at least a number of quality passes, we have seen Cabango player a number of excellent passes when the option become available with good movents in front of him but some awful ones when he trys to force ball though crowded area as the movement in the middle and up top becomes static and opposition's get wise to the tactics being used.

As for what position to play him it would be further up the park, Shearer yesterday talked about not wanting Harry Kane dropping too deep to "help out the midfield" as it left no out option up front and crowded his own team mates in the middle not allowing them space to play out through the middle, both meaning the England team were unable to relieve the pressure on them, while I don't want to be listening to Shearer about goalkeepering or what individual defenders and midfielders do but as a quality forward he is right about the forward pkay, similar can be said about Grimes I do not want to see his default position as struck between two central defenders the amount of time he does it restricts their play and limits options in front of them and invites pressure
.
As for best player in the middle you could also say Pato at times was and Allen similarly or even Patino until his confidence dipped. Yes Grimes is our most consistent midfielder but he needs help alongside him to one drag him further up the park, two players who are there throughtout the season and can do the chasing back and forward at a rate he cannot do, time to find those players. Thought we had found one in Downes but we let him go, would have been interesting to see Grimes, Downes and Fulton together although think Fulton game time needs to be limited now and once two new midfielders are found even more so.
Time for a change in the middle of the park.

Where do the fans think we will finish next season?
at 23:14 15 Jun 2024

Based on Williams and Sheehans pragmatic approach cannot see them being happy until we are push on the the upper half of the league next season, cannot see a concerted push to the upper reaches of the division with the present xquad but happy to see how square Pegs in square holes actually works to build confidence with a winning run.

And yet he is in many ways our weakest midfielder defensively but ends a game deep in our half even though we may need to press on the get at least a point. We have seen a different player when encouraged to push forward or with good players alongside him so the focus isn't solely on him. Not quick enough against counter attacks or players with pace attacking him through the middle of the park, he needs help.

Time for him to be replaced the loss of Ntcham last year left us short of options in the attacking midfield, we need at least two new players in the middle, Paterson and Allen for the most part cannot be relied on to regularly complete 90 minutes, Fulton is also struggling towards ends of games especially in congested fixtures periods and should he now be in the starting eleven, has been used better coming on to use his defensive experience to shore up the defence and given his height in defensive situations. All three of use but will need replacing sooner rather than later, even Grimes, the spine of the team is not strong enough and gets bossed out of games

You forgot to mention Parker who I thought was better than Govia but I have only seen limited amounts of both.
I do agree with your last paragraph as the way forward

As for the centre forward position we need a better target man but in the past was it not a case of we had forwards but not the right midfield who could protect our defence and also support our attack in Coopers case he didn't get to use Gyokeres because he had two American instead to help both in attack and midfield while having both Lowe and Ayew but crucially injuries hampered the team set up, same as the loss of Gibbs-White in the midfield.Under Martin Whittaker didn't get game time presumably because we had the likes of Piroe, Ntcham, Obefemi and Paterson with Downes in the midfield and Whittaker after his happier loan move wanted away.

With the loss Downes we were back with the same pairing in the midfield under Martin as we did.under Cooper and last season with the loss of Ntcham, the midfield needs strengthening as well as the forward line.

We had some joy when changing the midfield with Allen and Patino but Platino for me was made a scapegoat for the Leicester result and similarly Congreve after his first half substitution both deemed not ready and given little or no game time. As for next season Congreve did make the bench and maybe like Kuharevich were consider too much of a risk to use while in a precarious league position and a last resort once we went looking for a playoff position, will they get more game time next season?

It does seem as if the club/owners don't really know how to deal with players and managers contract negotiations what may work in the US or in business in general just does not offer any stability for them. Running down contracts or just.exercising the extra one year option at end of the original contract does not encourage relatively young players to stay and seems to actively force players away which some would say is ok if we had adequate replacements in place but are we in that situation as a squad at the moment?
If you are prepared to exercise the one year pption then offer an incentive to stay and extra year or extra pay, In the case of Wood he may want away, in Cullen's case not, we really need to secure our quality players to help the manager as soon as possible.
Maybe we should have got rid of Martin sooner if we weren't going give him more time than we did allowing the new manager time before a new season to get to know his squad and try and influence the decision makers as to what players he needs..
Hoping in William's case he can now have players ready before the season starts with little affect being caused by the overlapping season start and transfers window. because last year start was damaged by players leaving later coupled with numerous injuries forcing knee jerk and ill thought out signings.

Definitely not our main striker up top when playing a solo number nine and yet we are putting high balls into crowded boxes with very little presence in that box.
We have seen the likes of Parker, Congreve Abdulai, Lissah and Obegeta have good impact on games and yet some have been sparsely used or even let go, hoping that Williams sees the need to inject some forward impetus in the team which only youth can bring fine line to know how and when to introduce youth prospects, if they seem to be learning sometimes they need to be given time in a first team environment at the higher championship level.

I didn't think he regressed either think he is learning all the time, his natural strikers instinct hasn't been helped by the constant changes in position and team selection, having a settled team that starts gelling can win games and small changes which help to change the course in a game but without that settled team a load of players can look sub standard, especially forwards if delivery and support is poor.

Is it a case of players being brought down to a standard that the more experienced player can cope with and look good in a team while others are then targeted as being not good enough as they try and make up for the experienced players deficiencies and then cast aside very quickly because those experienced players aren't commanding enough to help them, eventually restricting the progression of new or younger players.
