Doesn't the League Two table make for pleasant reading at the moment. A gap of seven points between us and the play-off places and a gap of eleven between us and the season-ends-first-week-in-May places. A great position to be in as we head into 2005.
The form over the past three games has been great to watch. Twelve goals in three games compared to just two against. Four from Trundle, two each from Connor, Goodfellow and Robinson plus one each from Forbes and zzy (well, he claimed it anyway!) shows that goals are coming from around the park in abundance at the moment.
With 22 games left, we probably need somewhere between 35 and 40 points to assure promotion as we have to take the assumption that someone from the chasing pack will make a break on the top three. Yeovil are on top form at the moment and will pose a real threat to us on the weekend whilst there are potential signs of a wobble at Glanford Park. Of those just below us it's Northampton I have my eye on as the team most likely to challenge hard for the top three but at this moment in time I wouldn't swap being a Swansea fan in this division.
Kenny Jackett is right to bemoan a drop in standard of the second half yesterday but we all knew that the game was won and at 3-0 at half time I never had any doubt that we would win the game. Boston were posing little threat and I honestly think had they scored earlier then we would have stepped back up a gear and got the fourth such was our control. On this occasion I cannot blame the players for having one eye on the Yeovil fixture - potentially I would have made at least two changes at half time and used the second half as a chance to get Robinson and Maylett back into match fitness ahead of what is probably our biggest home test of the season this weekend.
I do feel that the return of Goodfellow to Bristol City will stem us slightly. From an unsure start he has come into his own in recent weeks and does seem to have given the side a more natural balance. Despite knowing what Robinson can do, Goodfellow is a natural left winger and with him and Forbes on the flanks we did appear to be creating the space that we sadly lacked in the early parts of the season. If I were the board, and the money is there, then we should be talking to the Ashton Gate crew to see if we can prise the man away. It may be a small price to pay for success?
But what we know now as we close out the year that was 2004, is that the Swans are in pole position to go on and take promotion this season. It's not a sure fire certainty that we are there but if we set the target between 8- and 85 points then we are looking at the sides below taking 2 of every 3 points available which becomes a big ask. Of the current sides in the top 7, only Northampton have been to the Vetch - they will not relish coming to a place where we have picked up 28 of 36 points this season. Of our season to date we are the best side in the division against teams currently in the bottom half of the table which is a sign of promotion winning sides on most occasions and even against the top half, only 6 sides have better records. Considering most of the top half (5 of the top 7 in particular) have been played away from home, that is not a bad record to boot?
Things are certainly looking very positive at the Vetch Field at the moment and it could all well bode for a very Happy New Year for Swans fans. We'll know more in 128 days!
