Now pre-season has just about finished, where do people think we are?

I think that we're a striker and a centre half off being a mid table side. I just can't see us doing as well as we did last time as we don't have the individual quality that we did last time around.

Finishing mid table would still be a good achievement though. I'd settle for about 17th right now.

Possession with progression.

Yeah i selected Lund for two reasons: firstly, i genuinely think he is, and will be our best, most active midfielder, and secondly, hes the only one that breaks up play significantly, allen and fox for me do the same job, in that they both kerp things ticking over, hery is probably the most comfortable on the ball and gets things going, plys he has had a good pre seasons. This is why lund and hery. As for the left back position, i genuinely didnt know who to put there, its completely open between tanser, done,.and rose. Rose edged it for me, although i am now thinking done will be more suited against pboro

My team would be
Lillis
Rafferty Lancashire Bennett Done
Lund Fox (if he signs)
Vincenti Hery Henderson
Morgan/Andrew/Muldoon

If we sign Morgan I think all we really need to sign is a centre half (Bennett is too prone to mistakes and Eastham too poor on the ball) and a pacey winger as we currently only have 2 options (Hendo and Vincenti) in those positions.

It's an interesting line-up, but if we're saying Done hasn't had the best pre-season, the same could also be said of Lund.

I don't for one minute think Hill will leave Lund out next Saturday, but certainly Allen and Fox (if he signs) have done more than enough to stake a claim for a starting berth.

Oddly enough, I did think for one minute that Hilly might leave Lund out next Saturday - but then decided he almost certainly won't.

But there are reasons why it's not an impossibility.

1) He wants to show him he's not indispensable.

2) He doesn't want to put him in the shop window with a contract still to sign.

We all know Hilly's capable of taking a decision based on more than just the immediate needs of the team. I suspect he'll still start though.

I like this team ...if we can play 13 players we will have a great chance of finishing in the top half of the table..Someone will have to disguise a couple of players as ball-boys or something though...

While agreeing we do need reinforcements, the standard of play from the young players who have been fully involved in these friendlies is cause for real optimism. In the past you might see brief appearances from youngsters and it would understandably see "they aren't ready yet" reactions. Now that still might be the case in reality, but at the same time seeing a bench next week of Cannon, Camps and Logan would be of no concern whatsoever and you'd half expect them to come on and do something.

It's the flip side of "it's only a friendly" argument, wherein you can't get carried away with positives as much as the negatives aren't worth worrying about too much. However, again, a game of football is just that and the introduction of our subs today saw them dominate a team full of experienced campaigners. Bury brought on the likes of Sedgwick and Thompson, but it was ours who made the difference.

Remember a few months ago, pal? When you said Dale's best XI was probably better than ours at that time and I pretty much agreed? Well, having seen both of us in pre season I feel our new look squad would be more than a match for you lot now.

Turnbull

Brown, Cranie, Nyatanga, Dudgeon

Berry, Bailey, Hourihane

Noble-Lazarus, Winnall, Jennings

Subs: Davies, M'Voto, Cowgill, Abbott, Digby, Rose, Nana.

Average age of that lot? 21 years old.

Average wage? Who knows, but it'll be one of the lower wage bills in the division, especially if Cranie eventually departs. However, it's worth noting that despite our fees being 'undisclosed' this summer that we've probably spent more than any other club in League One. We've only recruited one free agent, the young keeper Davies. The rest have been young lads with something to prove. Particularly impressive have been the performances of Hourihane who looks (albeit in friendlies that mean nowt) better than any midfielder we've had at Oakwell in the last couple of years. We also look to have solved our weakest area, the full back positions. It's been a pre season of vast change, and one where we've not won a game. So why the optimistic and exciting manner? Well, it feels like we have our club back after the Hillcroft experiment.

We've even got our own supporters bar now. Redfearn's. Something I campaigned for if you remember after my visit to Spotland last year. So aye, exciting times. I reckon both of us will have decent campaigns that will see us above halfway and in with a shout of the playoffs if injuries and luck go our way. For once.

You missed the mighty Hemmings off that list too!

It is a decent looking team all told. Look forward to seeing if it will translate into points on the pitch.

More interested in our own and Peterborough's potential starting XI at this stage.

Where Barnsley might be much better off is through the unknown quantities amongst some of those signings. Same with our younger players.

It could be a strange season with a lot of surprise packages.

Hemmings is still injured, has been since he arrived apparently and hasn't played at all this summer. Apparently, his poor injury record was what put off other clubs higher up the food chain and why he's the only player we've signed to just a 12 month deal.

Danny Rose scored yesterday and we're supposedly closing in on a 'wow' signing (Danny's words) so Hemmings could be struggling to feature at all, especially early on.

I think your starting XI picks itself.

Lillis

Rafferty Lancashire Eastham Done

Hery Lund

Hendo Allen Vincenti

Andrew

If Fox signs, then I'd put him in instead of Hery or Lund, especially against Posh. Ball retention is key.

Definitely.

It's a voyage into the unknown. Could just as likely go tits up as opposed to gloriously well.

Me, I think a top ten finish is expected. Danny says playoffs minimum.

But he knows this division inside out, so we'll see. But he's yet to get a club out of it through the front door. Albeit been close a few times.

The more I look at others the more impressed I am. Orient, Bristol City and even Notts County seem to have recruited well. Then there's clear favourites the Blunts with usual suspects PNE and Posh. Not to dismiss any of Bradford, Coventry or MK Dons.

Could be tight.

Exciting.

Maybe Rose could be on the move instead?

That Dale XI would worry me if only because it is weaker on paper than the one we signed off last season with.

I'm hoping there will be at least two additions this week.

Think someone has mentioned that Hill hasn't started a pre season game with Lancashire / Eastham partnership? If that's the case then I cant see them being paired on Sat. My team would be Lillis, Rafferty, Lancashire, Bennett, Rose, Lund, Hery, Allen, Henderson, Done, Andrew.

Bennett and Lancashire haven't played in a partnership in pre-season either.

I really hope Tanser starts on sat.
He's been solid defensively, and very composed on the ball during pre season, he's looked a class act in the short spell I've seen of him. For me, he is our best option in this current squad to fill the gap left by Jack O'Connell from last season.
But that said, it's a big ask.
