Do people actually believe this? When he left he had already assembled a talented squad, and we ended up staying up comfortably, 9 points above the drop zone.

GM had a significant input into where we ended up...after ML's final shit display at WHU.

David Moyes as an example that it doesn't necessarily work.
And then of course there is the small matter of available Budgets.

Make your mind up...earlier you criticised HJ for not regretting selling Wilf & thinking Bafe would be a ready-made replacement & yet you seem to support HJ regarding not going for Koeman, as he wouldn't necessarily have been a guaranteed success with us

Who knows how Koeman would have done here? He would have faced the same problems of dressing room cliques, trouble-makers and disinterested, sulky star players that Monk has handled very well.

Make no mistake, without careful management we could easily have gone down last season and could easily be bottom of the table this year. People choose to compare our current position with that of Southampton, but may be better off looking at what happened to Cardiff after they sacked Mackay. They were 1 point above relegation back then, compared to our 2 points above relegation when we appointed Monk, and they are now anxiously looking at the relegation spots to League One!

Monk was the leader of one dressing room clique and almost immediately purged every member of the other.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I don't think HJ has made many major mistakes as our chairman, but he really screwed up on that one. When a legend like Koeman, with his experience, accomplishments, and power to attract players comes calling telling you he wants to manage your club, I haven't clue in the world how you could possibly say no.

How do we know for sure that Koeman and/or his agent did actually say he'd like to manage us? Is it just a written quote or did Koeman actually say this in a press conference?

Extremely happy with Garry, hopefully with a stable manager and successful team the Swans will just get better.

I dread to think...

Maybe buy people like Fabuanski, Fernandez, Naughton, Sigurdsson and Montero?

The orthodox are always orthodox, regardless of the orthodoxy.

This Fabuanski chap - where does he play?

Jenkins signs the players - anyway, Siggy and Montero were on the radar when Monk was in the stiffs. I've heard Fernandez was an old Laudrup target too.

I'd keep quiet about Naughton at £5m if I were you...

Most people dismissed Koeman as an option because he’s the big name ex player that had caused us problems before (Not just Laudrup but Sousa as well).

Huw was absolutely right not to employ for this reason alone, and 90% of this board agreed with it at the time.

Where are you getting your Stats from? You think 90% who read this Board, let alone actual fans in the stadium are glad we have Garry rather than Koeman?

The sad thing is we did not even interview him.

GM had a significant input into where we ended up...after ML's final shit display at WHU.

Indeed from being on almost identical like for like PL points with our last amazing top ten finish when Laudrup was sacked. 12th position (same as we finished), having an amazing run in Europe and beating United to stay in the FA Cup with the injuries finally clearing and easier games and lighter fixture burden to come.

Then there was the Cardiff game that was 0-0 at half time until Laudrup's player Pablo came on and totally turned it around. Such that Monk said he wanted to build the team around him. (actual quote for those that want to mock)

Then we went on the longest run of games without a win since promotion and even picking up at the end of the season could not take us near the previous parity with like for like PL points. Despite an almost fully fit team, far fewer fixtures and taking us straight out of Europe and the FA.

Of course not having a Captain who was sulking and not leading on the pitch might have helped as might a couple of senior players not trying to take over from the manager by dictating to other players.

You are right GM did have a significant input to where we ended up.

Strange since the start of this September with a stronger team and far fewer injuries and fixtures and without the success in Europe or the FA Cup. Garry has only managed 1 single PL point more than Laudrup over the same 5 month + period and same number of games immediately before he was sacked for being so crap according to some. The same ones who think Garry has been doing so well, even in the last 5 and half months since those 2 weeks in August

You do understand what a quote is.

Read it is is very specific and was reported by a number of sources

I imagine he and his agent would be all over it like a rash if very specific lies dressed as invented quotes. Very different from assumption and general rumour.

In all seriousness do people still actually believe we were poor for a year under laudrup. And not that you may not have been appreciative of what was actually happening on the pitch at the time. To compete as well as we did against some of the teams we played. Yes west ham, Cardiff blah blah blah. Or is it now a case of you have to believe it.

No belief necessary. Just a look at the results would suffice.

Yep.

If I was Jenkins, I'd be distraught. While Koeman has proved himself to be one of the best managers in the country and firmly establishing Southampton in the top 7 of the Premier League, Jenkins is sitting at his desk wondering how his plan has all gone wrong and how the club's financial situation is going to go down the pipe even more after he had a brain fart and gave Monk a three year contract which will now warrant a hefty pay off come the inevitable sack.

Poor, poor decision making all around from Jenkins. He should be ashamed. To think any manager in this league could last 3 years is absolute madness. Even Laudrup, having won a trophy and made us play the best football in our history was only given a one year contract extension.

Koeman would have been perfect. But Jenkins is a domineer who always wants managers he can control. What better than a former player who he's practically mates with?

To provide balance - If team had continued to perform like last season and delivered another 8th place finished - then maybe some other club's might have poached Monk and would have received considerable compensation if he then had 2 years of 3 year contract left. We did start the season very well as well.

I hope Monk can turn our fortunes and performances around - as we will then have a really top manager on our hands.

To be fair, many on here were saying that Swansea should avoid hiring anyone who was a legendary player.

The problem is that the board and back room staff didn't support Laudrup after his first season. He drew up the list of players he had been talking to, but Swansea back room didn't succeed in signing any of them.

As for their run of poor form in the league, it is clear that when you have 8 or 9 players on the treatment table at one time, and Europa League fixtures on Thursdays, it should have been expected. Nevertheless, realistically they were never in danger of relegation, especially since many of those injured players were about to come back into the picture.

Yes, and ask yourself why we stayed up. Something I posted yesterday looking at our points tally over the last couple of seasons:

ML:
2012-13 before cup win (27 games) = 1.37 pts per game average
2012-13 after cup win (11 games) = 0.82 pts/ game (clear relegation form)
2013-14 first 24 games = 0.96 pts / game (borderline relegation form)

GM:
2013-14 last 14 games = 1.29 pts / game
2014-15 so far 1.43 pts / game

After january transfer window, there was no reliable striker, Michu was starting to show injury problems, and Chico got hurt. These problems continued into the next season, because it took Bony several months to get in shape, and he even needed to hire his own personal trainer to start performing.
On top of that, Swans had to start their season much earlier due to Europa qualifying, so they didn't have a proper conditioning period, so the risk of injuries would always be greater.
