That was pretty obvious to most of us, ive been stumped wondering where Zac Clough got appointed youth team manager under Keith Hill since....

'My bad' James, read your post but not the post you were replying to and assumed it was about the thread title The rest of us are stumped as to why Carlisle has such a huge catchment area for players (or even crowds) when it's surrounded by one of the most sparsely-populated areas in the the country [Post edited 10 Oct 2021 20:38]

| Chris Beech on 20:44 - Oct 10 with 2309 views | EllDale | My original point was that I understand that it’s difficult for clubs like Carlisle and the ones in Devon to attract seasoned players from other clubs who aren’t keen to uproot and relocate their families unless the financial package is really attractive. I always used to wonder why they didn’t sign more Scottish players but that’s one for another day. I remember reading a book by Garry Nelson about his time coaching at Torquay when they couldn’t really recruit anyone who wasn’t a free transfer player or someone on loan who they could place in a hotel for a month. And whilst Cumbria is a large area I think large chunks of it are rugby league territory. | | | |
| Chris Beech on 20:49 - Oct 10 with 2299 views | HullDale | seems to be a really mixed reaction from Carlisle fans online - the vast majority seem to think its the right decision (whilst saying what a good bloke he is and its a shame it didn't work out) but also lots saying that the main issues are with the backroom staff and maybe higher ups in the club too. It'll be interesting to see where Beech ends up next! | | | |

And sheep. Tbf, I think Carlisle have had quite a number of Scottish players in the times I've seen them play Dale from 1987 to the present day. They also had quite a few Irish lads when Roddy Collins was their manager. [Post edited 10 Oct 2021 20:58]

If you’re talking about who I think you are, his son(also banned) posts on the League Two forum and a while back stated that a large number of Dale fans were fat gammons with hypertension and weight related health problems etc. Must be a family thing.

Locality is an issue for us though there are ways around it that are problematic. We can offer bigger wages which we did under one recent manager but promotion didn’t come and it left us skint. I’ve always had a problem with Clubs spending above their means so that’s the wrong approach in my view. The best way is to take players looking for a leg-up and promise them that if they do well and another Club comes in for them they can leave fora reasonable (low) fee. Another way is to look for players elsewhere in the North or Scotland and leave them living 100 miles away so they just come in for a bit of training and home matches. It works to a degree but why would a player do that if there’s a local alternative that allows him to be home in half an hour? Some London players in the lower leagues spend a career living there playing for London Clubs and never leave. You lot have it comparatively easy with your catchment area which is why I struggle to see why we’re in the same division.

On your latter point on why we are in Div 2: We have never been fashionable although the success of the Academy is helping change that We were absolutely shite last season and we are in Div 2 on merit We have a low budget - one we can afford. It means we attract players with potential rather than experience. Sometime you need a bit of experience We have no training facilities of our own and some players will see that as a weakness. But it shouldn't be We are in a great catchment area - but the converse is the amount of competition for the same players too. Pity that Beech hasn't hit the ground running this season. Bruce should be available this week and he lives 50 minutes from you! And with a reported £11m pay-off he won't need a wage
