P&O Ferries 18:28 - Mar 17 with 6674 views | QPRSteve | What utter swine their Dubai-based owners must be. 800 made redundant to be replaced by cheaper foreign workers and with fück all notice. Even this Tory government seems shocked. We should at least reclaim the money given to the company by the government during the pandemic. Better still nationalise the company without compensation.

And many people will say "oh don't go on about that", but that's just them being woke and over-sensitive snowflakes on the issue with their head in the sand as this really capitalism is EXACTLY the problem. But people keep saying "oh it's all terribly bad, but what can we do?". Nothing if you keep making excuses for it. There is no democracy in companies, they are all little Putin empires.

Easier said than done I know for many but the approach I try and take is to make sure that no matter what, I'm not reliant on my employer forever, and I'm able to manage my affairs so that if I'm ever chopped unceremoniously (which can happen to any of us) its something I can survive until I move on. As said - I know its easier said than done but none of us can ever rely on our employer to look after us because they won't think twice about pulling stunts like this if it suits them and they can get away with it.

That period is 45 days, where 100 or more redundancies are planned in any one location.' It never been illegal in the UK to use ‘hire and fire’ tactics. There isn’t EU wide legislation that bans it outright, although a couple of individual countries (Ireland and Spain, for example) have their own legislation that do. So the UK hasn’t left anything behind in that regard with Brexit. However, there was a bill introduced in the House of Commons towards the end of last year that if passed would have outlawed what has happened at P&O (and before that British Airways and British Gas). But the government blocked it.

I refer you to my reply above. There was no consultation period with my firm 18 months ago.Everything was already decided before they even announced the closure of our depot. That’s why my Unite union is still fighting them in the courts. They thought they could do whatever they wanted, but hopefully they’ll come unstuck soon.

They keep the "Britannia Unchained" stuff pretty quiet these days, but that's where Patel, Truss, Raab and Kwarteng all came to prominence in the Tory party. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britannia_Unchained The whole premise was that Britain had to get out of the EU first and last to scale down our employment laws. That was always the endgame. It's been there in print since 2012. [Post edited 18 Mar 2022 14:34]

P&O Ferries on 13:04 - Mar 19 with 1497 views | E17hoop | It's an incredibly complicated case. The crew are likely UK based mariners meaning different Employment Rights may be in place. For example, if they're on UK flagged ships they'd be protected, but P&O reflagged their ships in the 70s to Bermuda. Whether RMT want to take them to court to suspend their action is a big call - it'd be expensive and 50/50 whether they'd win.

I’m afraid the writing was on the wall when they flagged out to Cyprus, same sketch as Irish Ferries 2005… I was working on P&O Dover- Calais for 6 months up until November on a temp contract, then when Irish Ferries moved into Dover last year that was like the nail in the coffin….They asked me to stay beyond November but I knew what was around the corner, as did most of the crews , but Jesus not like this….Brutal and disgraceful!!

Why would anyone want to go to that shite-hole Tax Haven on holiday is beyond me. Take away all their UK routes to Ireland and Northern Europe. See how that works. Oh and don't go on their cheesy cruises either.

I love how for a second she joins in the "shame on you" chant thinking it was directed at P&O and then realises it about her and scarpers!
