Ashes 2023 16:47 - Jun 8 with 91555 viewsHoopstar

Ah the home Ashes series is almost upon us, my personal favourite sporting event (not down under, that's just generally depressing.) I need something big sporting wise to focus on and quit my worrying about QPR for a while.

Anyone going?

I was at the first day of the World Test Championship at the Oval yesterday. The Aussies looked in depressingly good nick with the bat and their pace attack appears as terrifying as ever.

I think it's going to be an exciting, tough, tense series that'll go down to the wire. I only managed to get tickets to the very final day of the Ashes on 31st July at the Oval, you never know.

I predict...

Crawley to average less than 20 with Duckett getting closer to mid 30s
Brook to really secure his position as an outstanding talent and mainstay of the team
Pope to struggle again~
Root, in what could be his last home Ashes, proving his worth again
Bairstow - haven't a clue which version turns up post broken foot

Broad - an Ashes too far? You'd be mad to write him or Jimmy off.
Robinson to nab Smith at least four times..

Got back about 30 minutes ago having left early to catch one of the last trains. Another great day and will be glued tomorrow.

I thought we could’ve batted them out of the game completely, the late collapse was annoying. Still though, should be enough runs I would’ve thought

It was a great day all round from the 1st ball to the last. Some top banter with Mitchell Marsh on the boundary and some lovely shots by our batsmen.Shame we threw a few cheap wickets away at the end,but it’s already more than any other side has chased down to win a test at the Oval so hopefully the rain stays away and we get the win we deserve.
I was going to wear the hoops tomorrow but after todays result I’m not so sure.I’m on the front row of block 5 tomorrow so if the Aussies ever score any boundaries you might see my shirt.

Its actually ridiculous that Australia has retained the urn given the performances of the two sides. This series could easily have been 4-1 England whereas last time we were lucky to get 2-2.

Certainly England's approach has been absolutely vindicated, something the Aussie media will be absolutely hating.

Problem being with Ahmed after just 1 Test cap on a spin friendly Pakistan wicket, then to play him in a highly charged and pressured Ashes series might at best destroy his confidence or at worst kill off his Test career, just like it did for Jason Roy.
I’m not a fan of Moeen (or Leech for that matter) by any means but he can handle Ashes pressure and was probably the obvious choice. TBF we’ve not had a World class spinner since Swanny.
I might have tried to coax Rashid out of retirement, but he’s not played a test since longer than Moeen !

Had a quick read of the Sydney morning Herald online. Hardly any credit given to England at all. The focuses more on the aging tiredness of the Australian bowlers.

Broad announcing his retirement was sad, what a player and love his attitude!! Also how does he still look so young ??? Anyhow well played Sir.

AND WHEN I DREAM , I DREAM ABOUT YOU AND WHEN I SCREAM I SCREAM ABOUT YOU!!!!!
Poll: best number 10 ever?

Those Aussies will be relying on the rain again. We can't let them get away with it. They've batted so negatively over the last two tests, they deserve nothing. Not what I have come to expect from them over the years.

The Telegraph wrote a good piece, the writer said they were almost trying to parody Bazball by going so slow on Friday

a full days play in prospect, cant see the Aussies messing this up... those last 5 wickets that fell for 30 odd runs in 10 overs Saturday evening could prove costly for England.. at the time i said it was brainless, especially with 2 days left to play.. could've batted them out the game completely

Had a fun day at the Oval yesterday despite England posing zero threat and my ticket costing me £4.75 per over I saw.

Facilities at the Oval look very nice when you get there, but at lunch, was one of the most unpleasant experiences I've had at a sports ground. Every food vendor had a queue of about 200 people, merging into all the other queues of 200 people, and it was total gridlock. Was quite taken aback given the investment the place has had

Love to see Broad bowl the victory here. Funny feeling though this tail might see the Aussies home.

Absolutely brilliant series. Listening to it on TMS from Canada - how fitting that Broad gets the final wicket.

Surely, surely, the only person ever to retire with their last ever swing of a bat resulting in a six and their last ever Bowl getting a wicket?

Best series since 2005

Still a bit of "if only" for England but 2-2 probably a fair result

No Ashes legacy for Smith and Warner 😂
