One of the best bowlers I ever saw.

In the days of Peter West and Ted Laker on BBC test match coverage I was a kid, but loved watching Derek bowling, plus playing his obligatory night watchman role. He said his greatest thrill in cricket was when he made a championship century for Kent.
RIP Derek.

At his best, and in the right conditions, almost unplayable

On a drying pitch in the era of uncovered wickets he was ‘deadly’.

I remember the1968 final test at the Oval when rain appeared to have ruined Englands chances of squaring the Ashes series. Amazing effort by ground staff and volunteers to get the pitch playable on final afternoon. With ten men around the bat ‘deadly’ Derek got them.
