Pete Wild leaves Barrow.
I’m sure he won’t be out of work for long.

True, because they lost their bottle at the end of the season. But the majority are surprised.

Barrow have done remarkably well over the past 5 seasons or so and the town is loving the progress. There has been a buzz about it - a bit like our period under Hilly when we had to pinch ourselves. They have built a core support of around 2500 and managed to enjoy decent cup runs and good away followings. The Board has ambition, but they need to be careful that the decision isn't reckless and they end up falling back.

One thing I find strange about Barrow is that both Holker Street and the rugby club are next door to each other. Both stadiums are run down by modern standards. They could merge and build something that the town could be proud of that has great facilities etc. With significant investment in the town just now with BAE taking on thousands of apprentices and engineers to manage our submarine projects, they could really be on the up. You can't get a hotel room in Barrow for love nor money most days in the week - it is booming just now.

The ground adjacent to Holker St (Barrow FC) is used by Furness Rovers, with the rugby league club playing about a mile away on Duke St

I worked at BAE in Barrow in the 1970s (or Vickers as it was known in then) and there was a palpable fear in those days as to what would happen to the town if GB scrapped it’s nuclear deterrent.
In those days there was even a direct express rail link to London for MOD bigwigs to get there easily.
Any prospective MP wouldn’t have stood a chance if he’d been anti Polaris/Trident.
I think there are around 12000 on the dockyard workforce at the moment with another 5000 projected jobs. And these jobs are well paid.
Those jobs could all have gone in ten years though so there’s no long term planning for infrastructure or facilities. Like the 11000 working up the coast at Sellafield it’s all short term , living for the present attitudes prevailing.

They fly into Walney airfield nowadays.

The BAE story today is one of heavy investment and there are no short term jobs. They have 20+ year contracts with the MOD and that means big infrastructure investments. BAE have bought Debenhams and other town centre buildings to build out state of the art training sites. They really are taking on 1000+ apprentices this year and all will have jobs for life if they choose to stay there. The Government wants 3,000 new homes built in Barrow to support the growth in the BAE based workforce. It is a massive turnaround story compared to 30 years ago.

Did you know that Barrow now has the highest disposable income (after housing costs) as a percentage of income than any other town in the UK? The football club should continue to do well. There is nothing else to compete within 50 miles.

Sod that, should Dale be making a run at him?

Make Jim his assistant, Pete can show him how to manage and it would be akin to on the job learning for Jim.

I live in Barrow and can 100% corroborate this. Apprenticeship schemes will pay for degree level qualifications and a lab impressive starting salary. There has been a brain drain in the town to a degree though - plenty of teachers and similar professions leaving to work “at the yard” as the pay and job security is unparalleled around here
