Think it’s even more complex than that. I’m in the ‘he’s a good manager for the club at this particular time with some limitations’ camp.
Even then, nobody can ignore the positive culture he’s created around the club during and since one of the worst periods in the club’s history. We now have a team that is united and one which represents what we all want from a Dale side: hardworking, pulling in the same direction, playing some exciting attacking football (even if it isn’t as much as we’d like at times). | |

I'd describe McNulty as being a safe pair of hands over the last eighteen months, we couldn't have had a better fit when you bear in mind the off field turmoil we've had. His recruitment has been very good overall i think, we can now field a starting eleven to match any in this league and there is a bit of strength in depth. I find his football extremely frustrating at times though and don't think he is getting the best out of the players at times, they look too structured and rigid in the system and patterns he wants them to play. Then i see us playing some great football but it's often when we are having to chase the game. I think he'll improve as a manager with experience but not sure whether it will be with us or not. I'd prefer him to stay at the club because he knows the plan and next Summers recruitment will be key to the three year plan. Now isn't a good time to be changing managers. |  | | |

I've come to the conclusion that this is an unfair question, since fans don't have a handle on who might be available
It's too easy to ask this. My answer would be: someone who understands the game at lower league level and isn't looking to perpetuate a system that only teams at the top level can realistically deploy. I've no idea who that might be, but i do know i've fallen out of love with the game as we're playing it at the COA

Agreed. Our club has a great story to tell and with financial security - and a board with ambition to return to the Football League an attractive prospect, which I would think should attract multiple applications. Playing attractive, attacking football and improving our indifferent home form should be things the board would want to test in the selection process. | | | |

Whatever your views on the style of football Dale owe BJ a massive debt for keeping the team going in the close season of 2023 and up to the end of 2023/24.
If Burton are looking for someone to make them tight knit and difficult to beat he’s probably not the man.
If they want a manager to play modern, possession based football he’s ideal. | | | |

And that’s fair enough, like the other thread about the nee NL cup, fans feel differently. As mentioned loads of times before I don’t like the way the game has gone, but I’m willing to accept that amongst the frustrations of playing in stupid areas and not going forward at pace enough, we have played some of the best attacking football seen for years.
The question is not who might or might not be available, more which managers play in a more effective way than McNulty who would be suited to the players we have. I genuinely don’t know either as so many play this way now, it’s at every level not just the top of the game. Not sure there is a ‘lower league level’ game anymore - look at the praise Gateshead have had for being consistently good playing this type of football with managers then being poached by lower EFL clubs.
That’s why, whilst he’s getting good results, improving players and we are seeing some half decent games for the first time in forever, McNulty can be said to be doing a good job. And he’s definitely helped lift the feeling in and around the club, despite the totally justified misgivings around some of his tactics. [Post edited 6 Nov 20:35]

He's certainly liked by the legacy board, who seem to be in control of the footballing side of things, and i fully accept our position in the league is what it is
One therefore has to ask: why is there so much hand-wringing after virtually every game? Why is the prospect of growing crowds so distant whilst playing this way?
I disagree also about "lower league football". The straightforward response is: if you have away fans (Bromley) and home commentators (when we're away) laughing at us and asking why we make it so easy for their team to counter us, there's something just wrong, and we know exactly what that is | |

Yes, that’s why I’ve mentioned what’s wrong.
The frustrations are shared by a lot of fans, but during games I can only say what I’ve seen and there’s been a much better atmosphere both before and during matches. There’s a real positive link between the squad and the supporters, McNulty deserves a lot of credit for that.
There are enough threads on here where people have been really positive after games as well. It might not be as often as we’d all like, but in the main there’s been a lot of good performances this season. From the games I’ve seen around half would fit into that category: Dagenham, Woking, Maidenhead, Aldershot, Hartlepool, Halifax and Saturday. There have been some average and some poor too of course but so far it’s been my most enjoyable season as a Dale fan since 17/18, which was only salvaged by the cup run and great escape.
But I won’t be speaking for everyone on the specifics! [Post edited 6 Nov 21:10]

Even though it’s right, not sure it would benefit the club if they we had to find a new manager at the moment.
So, to confirm, Burton wouldn’t be lucky as they’d be conceding ridiculous goals by passing about in dangerous situations.
