Russell Martin court case settled on 18:24 - Nov 16 by ReslovenSwan1 | "Fire sale" is loose emotional language which suggests giving away players at knock down prices. Typical of forums. Swansea got big losses on Clucas half price deals on Fernandez and Ayew J. On the other hand made big profits on Fabianski and Mawson. People mention firesale repeatedly and it is repeated. misleading. Loses on Bony Borja and Ayew A were contact run downs. The wages were slash and Potter was given £7m to spend. He could have bought and paid Ivan Toney but instead chose weakling McKay who not on single fan ever rated and the non tackling full back Declan John. |
£7m for a newly relegated team from the premier league. That tells its own story.

Potter and McCauley demanded control over recruitment and were given a decent sum that was more than enought for players like Toney. He blew the £7m on players that Cooper ditched on grounds of non negotiables. Potter then sulked when the club declined to waste another £7m on another washout Ryan Woods who vanished after Stoke coughed up. No wonder they are a mess

You’re confusing selling players for less than we paid for them with selling them for less than their market value. To use your favourite example, Brighton made a profit on Gyokores. If financial necessity dictates you do that with most of your first team, it’s a firesale. Whether that has been brought on by your signing players like Ayew, Bony and Borja on contracts that were barely sustainable in the PL, let alone the championship, is by the by.

I expect we would have agreed a fee for Toney but couldn't meet the wage demands. There are a few other players which fall into this category.

Saying ‘we could have just bought Ivan Toney’ is a bit naive really. £7m isn’t a lot to build a squad that had been ripped apart and McBurnie had already been earmarked for that role. Overall Potters signings were failures, Celina did well that season but he was the only one, Blaming him for not signing a player that then went on to do really well is ridiculous. There were at least 30 other clubs with bigger budgets than us who didn’t sign him either. There will be players within our price range this and every other season that slip under everyone’s radar and go on to do much better than expected. Resolven knows this, but he’ll say anything to defend Levein and Kaplan.

That’s a good assessment of the situation He constantly repeats the same boring old stuff whilst knowing that it’s inaccurate in the hope that it will eventually convince (some) people. Winston also does this.

At this time Toney was leaving Newcastle to Peterborough. They managed to pay his wages. Sadly Potter has a useless recruitment man McCauley who bought in 4 weaklings. You are prone to defeatist talk. Potter demanded control of recruitment , gave the club "the four non negotiables" then said "Im off the owners are to blame". Who in his right mind would play McKay in the championship? [Post edited 17 Nov 12:04]

The bit you’re not grasping with Toney is Peterborough was his level at the time. He’d spent the previous three seasons at Barnsley, Scunthorpe, Wigan and Shrewsbury, without making much impact. Had his potential been obvious, he would have stayed at Newcastle or gone to a bigger club than either ourselves or Peterborough. Potters recruitment was terrible. Nobody is disagreeing with you there. He was much more successful developing the young players we already had.

I object to the narrative that Levien and co are to blame for everything. There was no " firesale". Underperforming players of huge wages were sold for a profit and wages removed Potter was given 3-4 real prospects from the academy Fer VDH the keeper Olsen and a respectable £7m. Fans do not understand recruitment people job is to see potential and select players with a long term development future. Potter bought dead wood to the club and I expected a lot better from him with his Euro experience. Recruitment people have to be several levels above general fans who say "he was no good for us at the time" . Apologists for poor work. It is tiring for me to daily trash lazy narratives. Given up on ‘Potter should have signed Ivan Toney’ then have you? Three surviving first team players, four if you include Connor Roberts who had a couple of cameo appearances towards the end of the previous season. Academy graduates and £7m. Fabianski was our keeper in the Prem. That’s atrocious. Compare that to any of the teams that have come down since. How many lost most of their starting eleven and only had £7m to replace them with? As I’ve said, Potters signings were very poor. I’m not blaming Levien and Kaplan for how he spent the meagre amount he was given to completely rebuild a team. We had plenty of players with long term development potential. We had a category A academy once. Potter blooded the best ones, our owners had to sell them to keep the lights on, then downgraded the academy. I’m not sure what Potters remit was. Probably to firefight and bring young players through. Coopers was to get us up. He wouldn’t have been allowed so many high profile loans if it wasn’t. You have to realise that not all mangers/recruitment teams have the same remit. It varies with different clubs, owners and circumstances. Whether it was necessary or not is a different issue. I completely understand we couldn’t shift Ayew or Borja on the money we were paying them. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t a firesale. You probably don’t even see the irony in ‘apologists for poor work’. At least they are going now.

7m is an atrocious amount to offer a newly relegated team from the premier league, doesn’t matter who spends it.

Levien and co made bad decisions without a doubt. However this forum and others are xenophobic in their placing of blames. If the club gave Potter carte blanche he would have wasted even more. Potter Cooper and Martin all broke their contracts when the waters got choppy as a result of their own lack of foresight. I am not a football recruitment expert but Toney or Declan John s looks like a pretty obvious call to me even then. I saw Declan John play for Wales u21. He could not tackle. He still cannot. Yankee bashing is the solution of all ills. I hope Coleman will be shown some love despite being a foreigner and not the wonderful Mr Birch.
