Im not claiming this is the best Rochdale side ever. But looking at the current team and the way it plays, name one player from the past, who would improve us and why and whose place in the team would he take
This is a tricky question - most of the side would be replaced I feel because of the level we are now playing at. The reverse question - which of the current squad would get in our best ever team, may be more appropriate!
I only started watching the Dale in 2000 so apologies to those who are longer in the tooth. But over my years of watching / my understanding, based on what team I think would be best:
GK - Tom Heaton CB - P Butler CB - Craig Dawson CB - A Reeves CM - D Perkins RM - Mendez Laing CM - G Jones LM - Paddy CF - Hendo CF - G Holt CF - R lambert
Subs / honourable mentions Jamie Allen G Murray Reggie COG Rathbone Dagnall Alf
An out and out goalscorer to replace Rodney and we would be out of sight. A Holt or an ALF would score buckets in this team.
For what it's worth, Reg jenkins had many of Rodney's physical attributes and in his prime would've been banging in 20+ this season, as well as almost never being "knocked off the ball"
That's not to say others haven't been as good, especially Holt
In recent times, i'd have loved to have seen Scott Hogan playing on Mani's shoulder (not literally!)

IMHO all given us better service than Heaton did
Tom Heaton was an excellent goalkeeper for us during his short spell at the club. Setting sentiment aside, I thought he was a much better keeper than Tommy Lee.
Andy Lonergan also deserves a mention — he performed very well during his brief time here too.

Heaton was outstanding. You're talking drivel. I saw him make a save at Aldershot from a close range shot and to this day, it rates as one of the best saves, I've ever seen from a Dale keeper and that's saying something.
He went on to become an established goalkeeper at Premiership level and was called up to the England squad.
If that's 'useless' he had it in bucket loads.
Andy Lonergan was a terrific keeper and made a valuable contribution in his short stay, after which he won a medal with Liverpool, winning the European Super Cup in 2019.
Gavin Bazunu, Ollie Whatmuff, Frank Fielding, Marcus Hahnemann and others have all been brilliant additions to our squad when their time came to be here.
Keith Welch, Les Green, Ted Burgin and many others are worthy of mention.

P Butler as in Paul Butler? didnt he play for you early mid 90's then took the step up and signed for us well before 2000 or did he go back to you? he scored the winner at Maine Rd. Saw him a couple of times in pubs in Whitefield while he played for us.
