Poor/weak defending. Morecambe scorers left unmarked.
| Refwatch - Rochdale v Morecambe on 17:11 - Apr 3 with 3667 views | 442Dale | We’ve chosen the worst time to become defensively weak. Susceptible outside both wide central defenders who are struggling. Again though, game should have been done before their first. We haven’t made the most of good situations all season long and now it’s really starting to hurt us. Got to hope we find something to respond now. | |

| Refwatch - Rochdale v Morecambe on 17:19 - Apr 3 with 3558 views | SJE_Dale | There needs to be a study on our ability to pull out turgid performances every time a decent crowd show up. 4500 was a great turnout. Turned into embarrassment seeing people leave with 5 minutes left in a generational title race. I've been a supporter of Jim but I feel these results have been coming for a while now and it's down to his tactics. Our past 10 fixtures have all been decided by one goal (minus the draws) whereas our challengers York have seemingly been sweeping past teams for months bar the odd bad result here and there. People will moan about York scoring late goals so often but you know why they do it? Because they relentlessly attack until they force a way through. Even at 3-2, I constantly feel like we're missing another gear or 10% of urgency We move away from the ball in the hope of a defensive error. We spend too long holding onto the ball and getting caught. We keep looking for a cute pass and don't challenge enough for 50/50s. It's fine when teams don't want to match us but these gritty games need more effort Feels like watching us run through treacle sometimes. Our one saving grace for the last 4 fixtures is the return of Gilmour. I think we've missed him more than we realised. He brought more tenacity and urgency in 20 minutes than the rest of the team did in 90. Also I think the players need to question why a 42 year old is the one stepping up at this key moment. This one really stings today and it was completely avoidable. As was Halifax, Scunthorpe etc | | | |

Worked in our favour for much of the season, but this is crunch time

What, like against all the teams who we have done well against in the club’s history in front of a big crowd? Or when we beat Carlisle this season when the crowd was bigger against a direct challenger? Unfortunately days like today suit some people.

We had god knows how many corners and I can’t recall one that ended up with an attempt on target. Move onto to the next game and hope that we still have a chance come the last game

They were excellent. Players have to have a look at themselves individually. Winning battles, being first to the ball, running harder than your opposite number. Basics we fell short on. Tactically by being set up so attacking with the wing backs playing so high it and the wide centre backs pushing on, it means we will get found out down the sides if players are slightly off it. Today it wasn’t even slightly. And at the other end we still should have scored four. On your point about corners the free header Gordon missed at 1-0 was, in retrospect, a big turning point. It was a perfect storm to match the weather. [Post edited 3 Apr 17:46]

Its been on the cards for a good few weeks, we've majorly gone off the boil and our league position has some what papered over the cracks. The team seems to let far too long during a game just pass them by without ever really showing any urgency, im all for the slow methodical patient type build up but there comes a time when its glaringly obviously not working and the team need to shift the ball quicker and gets forward faster.

Will go back a couple of months to when Moss started playing at LWB. The posts are there, and it’s not something anyone wanted to be true, but as well as he has done individually with his own performances, him playing there limits our play. He isn’t used enough because the other players know he won’t be an out ball to carry the ball past his man, then the play shifts straight back to the right. We aren’t any slower with how we move up the pitch, but the ball goes back across when it reaches the left. We need Allarakhia and TAR back.

Your post seems pretty contradictory, you're saying we aren't 'any slower how we move up the pitch' yet admit 'the ball goes back across when it reaches the left', by going back across the pitch the team naturally isnt moving forward as fast while passing sideways

You are right. The 2 wingbacks today. Moss and Hannant, made no attempt to move the ball forward. There was constant shovelling the ball back to the back 3. Equally East and Pettit were simply bypassed by physically stronger midfielders. And the corners were atrocious, perfect for the keeper. Why not try a variety? All in all-probably the game that will define our season, not the 41 before. Hartlepool let in 7 last week. How many shots on target will their keeper have to face? UTD

Not at all contradictory. We play the same way but without an option that sees us move quickly down the left when it goes down that side. It was the same from when Moss came back into the side v Carlisle, in the subsequent 10 games we won 7 and drew 3 so it wasn’t as critical/noticeable. The overall structure remains the same, only with a player who doesn’t offer as much as an outlet through no fault of his own.

Well done to Morecambe today. Well organised and took their chances superbly. We struggled big time today. I reckon we spent 15 minutes passing it sideways and backwards in our own half....possibly even more than usual. It wasn't good for the additional 1500 or so supporters who will have gone home thinking "same old Dale" as YD alludes to. Hannant especially seemed intent on passing backwards for the first hour or so, and had little desire to press forward. Sadly, Mani D looks knackered as well . Possibly returning too soon from his injury? I'd say the players we are missing are Pritchard , TAR and obviously Gilmour who will need a few games to get back to full fitness. Hendo is pure class, and did more to worry their defence in his brief cameo than Mani D did all game. Smith briefly troubled them and Barlow was busy whilst he was on the pitch. Momentum is now firmly in York's favour. Can we pressure them from behind as they have done to us? Or will we fall just short and suffer the playoffs once more. At this moment I don't fancy our chances of beating a few of the teams below us. Big job that Jim has now to lift spirits in time for another tricky game against Hartlepool, who are another team that can play well or awfully on their day.

I can deny it. Because it doesn’t happen all the time. If it’s in the club DNA, why didn’t we come up short v Scunthorpe in a cup replay in 1985 knowing Man Utd were waiting in the next round? Why didn’t we lose against Halifax and Stockport in 1987 when we were in danger of going out of the league? Why didn’t we just surrender in a timid fashion against Carlisle in the AWS semi second leg in 1995? Why didn’t we play badly against Fulham in 2001 in front of over 6000? Why didn’t we fail to get to Wembley v Darlo in 2008? Why didn’t we fail to win promotion in the games v Northampton and Cheltenham? Why didn’t we go out of the cup v Leeds and Forest? Why didn’t we just roll over and lose against Spurs and Newcastle? Why didn’t we lose to Carlisle in February? Do we lose some games when there’s a big crowd? Of course. But when talking the club DNA, at least be fair. Results like today might suit some arguments. But only arguments that are based in fact.

Moss and Hannant constantly receiving the ball and just passing back again was mind boggling. It was crying out for them to switch sides and at least have a chance of some forward impetus. Hannant had a blinding season at Gateshead playing left wing back.

While we're passing sideways more we cant be pushing forwards as quickly, thats just logical. How can we 'play the same way' if its blatantly obviously different, you've pointed it out, ive clearly noticed it too, how can playing different ever be 'the same', that makes no sense. We can set up and try to play the 'same' but trying and execution are two completely different things

Or did we make them look good…this is a team that had got one point from its last 4 games and is doomed to relegation. If ever there was a banker win it was today.

Exactly that. We haven’t changed how we build up from the back, we knock it around between the back three waiting for the right ball. The issue is then when we have come out from the back to go towards the left. It wasn’t an issue that was much discussed when we collected 24 points in 10 games, but as noted, it was pointed out at the time. There wasn’t much call for Moss to be left out during that run even though it was obvious how it was restricting how we play.

Thought McNulty’s interview was good, he recognised how poor we were defensively to allow a team with some decent individuals to take advantage. Sensed some real annoyance with how we conceded goals. Would think Beckwith’s return may be fast tracked if at all possible.
