| Dale Retained List on 08:28 - May 31 by D_Alien | How long left on JM's contract? Is it just one year? Would be interesting to see if the club are looking to renew/extend it, whether they're waiting till maybe Xmas, or if there's already been talks which have proven inconclusive It'll all be kept under wraps of course but the reality of winning games (or not) will return soon enough [Post edited 31 May 8:50]

We're a smaller fish is a larger pond now, the landscape has changed completely with our promotion and hopefully the fan base will realise that. It's why trying to compare McNulty with Hill in respect of achievements wasn't neccessary. Managing Rochdale in the EFL is a different animal to the National League and teams in this league wont sit deep and let us dominate possession. We're going to have be stronger, fitter and faster in every area of the pitch and the manager is going to have to bring in better players to help us compete week in and week out. He'll need a decent budget to do that. I dont want to sound harsh but those 'get out of jail' last gasp goals deflected the attention away from the reality, our performances in general during the final third of the season weren't great if we are being honest and i include Wembley in that. I do think the fixture congestion played a part in that though. I hope McNulty stays but wouldn't be surprised to see him join a Premiership Club in a coaching/ academy role similar to BBM. | Dale Retained List on 07:06 - May 31 by TalkingSutty | Stockports ambitions are to reach the Championship, i'd be surprised at this stage if McNulty is on their radar. I actually think if you're Jim then the timing to accept a move to a bigger club IS right, if that's what he's thinking. His reputation and profile is very high at the moment but all that could change in six months time. I would guess our playing budget will be lower mid table next season and there's a chance we could struggle from the start. When that happens then managers come under pressure, the priority is always the club and results, managers and players become disposable because slipping back into the National League affects the whole infrastructure of the club. The Club also has to match the ambitions of the manager and to do that they have to provide a competitive budget. I think the budget will be the key because as was stated on this forum when he was linked with Burton, the manager has his own ambitions and his family to think about, that still applies now. McNulty's returned us to the EFL, he owes us nothing in respect of loyalty. The clubs ambitions are to be self sustainable in the EFL, young ambitious managers will want more than that and will see us as a stepping stone to bigger things and i think that's where we are now with McNulty. I'm not even sure being self sustainable as a competitive EFL club is possible but that's for another discussion. [Post edited 31 May 8:00]

I think Stockport fans would be stunned if Jim was offered the job there. They need a bigger fish at this stage. My guess is that Jim will stick with the project for now ..challenging for a play off place?..I can’t see that. Although what do I know?…when we were relegated I feared we’d fall thro the national league completely in the first season..as others have done. Some of our retained players may find the step up too much and hence the recruitment process certainly needs to bring in better quality than we already have. It’s a real challenge for all concerned

I think we are a completely different club than we were the last time we were in the league, then we were are club in decline and on the back of four or five poor seasons. Now we have new life and some momentum. There is no reason why we shouldnt hold our own in div 2. We have the backbone of a good squad and if quality can be brought it to replace those released then we should be looking at top half of the table. The ambition of the owners was to build the team up with quality to get promoted in three seasons with a team good enough to compete in league 2. That has come a year earlier and i think the owners will adjust the budget accordingly. I get that the last third was not good but injuries , congestion and pressure all had a handin that, overall last year we showed more than enough to compete against league two sides. 23 points off the top 7 clubs indicates that. Momentum is massive in football and as a club we need to maximise on the momentum off last season. We can’t think that getting back into the EFL is job done. I don't think for one moment anyone at the club does either. The update from the owners shows the ambition for the club off the field. They are not going to cut corners on the field. I think jim has a great opportunity to continue his development as a coach. I think it will need to be a good opportunity for him to move on. We are a different club from when burton came sniffing, jims desire to leave will not be as great

Everything boils down to money in football, that's the reality unfortunately. Give me a lower mid table finish next season with Jim in charge and i'd take it. [Post edited 31 May 12:33]

| Dale Retained List on 13:28 - May 31 with 3604 views | 49thseason | Its worth everyones time to spend a quiet half hour reading MRKT's blog pages , their insights into building clubs and what is required to make jumps up the pyramid are fascinating. Their analytics are hugely insightful if , like us, you are bringing in players suitable for a higher level of football and who equally can turn into valuable investments. Assuming their advice has helped to bring us out of the National League , it will be a major plank in our campaign to re-establish in L2 and above. Given that we do not have a 20,000 seat stadium or a fanbase to warrant one, it is apparent that player development and sustainable business units in and around the club are the keys to continued success, whether football related or not. Clearly, the owners will want to minimise their financial input once the basic essentials are in place and the right people are invested in long term careers at the club with a growing sense of pace and direction clearly understood and established. Thankfully a completely different animal is being created at The COA, which will attact sponsorship, increase crowds and bring better players. The trick will be, and stay, one step ahead of our immediate competitors financially and in footballing terms. https://mrktinsights.com/index [Post edited 1 Jun 9:48]

Two key points stood out for me: - The limited (assume financial?) difference between top end of the National League and the bottom of League One - The ability to leverage data and recruitment to outperform teams with budgets up to 25% higher. With continued success with recruitment getting back up to League One should definitely be an aim. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Darren Ferguson would be my choice for the County job
| Dale Retained List on 17:30 - Jun 1 with 2023 views | 442Dale | Quite a few on the County forum are leaning towards McNulty. The deciding factor, not withstanding whether he’s Stockport’s first choice, is what the Ogdens do next. A new contract? Further confirmation (which may not be needed) around the plans for building the team over the next few years and reaffirming their wise choices not to listen to the noise that follows defeats/poor runs of form. | |

Their chairman’s farewell message to Challinor and his family shows that it would be a club where McNulty could stay and settle for a good few years. Taylor will also be a familiar face to their fans. I think it would be a better move than other clubs he’s been previously linked with. The only slight surprise is that Stockport aren’t going for someone with experience of promotion from League 1/ management experience in the championship.

Stockport had won the first leg of their play-off semi the day before. If they’d gone up, there wouldn’t be this discussion. It would be very unlikely at that stage they’d have been speaking to a National League manager who could have, 24 hours later, had two playoff campaigns that hadn’t resulted in promotion. Especially as a possible replacement for a manager who would go on to have two similar playoff campaigns … but two divisions higher. Stockport aside, McNulty will attract the interest of other clubs for the way he’s not only achieved success, but shown he is capable of continual improvement year on year. He’s an excellent example of a strong manager who sticks to his beliefs and gets players to buy into his culture and methods.

Looking at most of the bookmakers odds very few have McNulty as favourite. David Artell, Darren Ferguson and a few others seem to be in front of him. Good luck to Jim if he did decide to leave, same applies to any of our players. This is football, it's why as a club we always need to have ambition to do better season on season. Every manager and player should strive to compete at the highest level possible.

This is why I believe it would be the wrong move for him. The expectation will be to do as well as Challinor or better. In his first season. We’ve seen how he’s evolved as a manager, learnt from mistakes whilst building a winning culture. That’s taken time, and the ability to trust his judgment when that noise comes from those who expect success in every game. He’s proven himself to be a very strong individual who can shut out that noise, a steely determination to improve. He won’t change, nor should he, but imagine losing a few on the bounce in L1 and Stockport being mid-table as he beds in his ideas and that culture. Will he be afforded the same support from the club there when a few moaners start calling for his head or saying they never wanted him in the first place? When we’re 16th in October it’ll no doubt happen a bit here, but people will be shouting into the wind with the Ogdens and indeed much of the fanbase now. We’ve seen that supporting the manager and his team will, with some patience needed along the way, get us to where we want to be eventually. [Post edited 1 Jun 18:09]

You also questioned his suitability when we lost to Gateshead and Southend last season and expressed your doubts, just like the majority of the fanbase? I agree, and any manager/player than doesn't will end up going backwards; but still. they need to choose their moves at the right time I don't look at bookies odds myself, just going off what others had posted 442 makes a good point about the unlikelihood that he'd reached any kind of agreement whilst both sides were still involved in their playoffs, but still, that haunted/gaunt look doesn't occur in someone who's perfectly at ease with the pursuit of ambitions when he fully recognises the "good thing" he's involved with at Dale [Post edited 1 Jun 18:13]

League One could potentially be very challenging next season, especially if Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday get their act together. Bradford could kick on and the likes of Huddersfield, Reading, Luton and Plymouth should be there or there abouts. How long would he have to build his squad? Can he adapt his footballing philosophy to suit Stockport's current players or can they adapt to his?

Didn’t say I didn’t have doubts! And McNulty was spot on to ignore my constant going on about changing to a three man midfield as well! My defence of him, even when looking to add constructive criticism, was that he was clearly building something that was improving. What needed to happen was that he learnt from his mistakes and got results to back that up. Which he consistently did. Could be wrong but posted after Southend that the doubts I had were whether he could find players who could see out games, particularly a midfield destroyer type. Didn’t think we could achieve promotion without having that sort of player. Again, he proved me wrong and just carried on playing Gilmour and East almost every week! There’s never been a stage when I’ve thought we should replace him. The noise mentioned is those that have, often after a bad result and with no little amount of disrespect. And that doesn’t mean it’s happened exclusively on here. It’s also the noise about questioning his methods, especially when it’s obvious they all know what they’re doing and trust it. Which is why me saying play a 3 man midfield is as irrelevant as “don’t pass it about at the back”, I’m entitled to that opinion but McNulty and his players, and subsequently his employers have earnt the right to completely ignore it! I just don’t think that would happen if he’s midtable entering winter in Stockport. [Post edited 1 Jun 18:37]

One thing that i don't doubt is that McNulty would interview very well if given the opportunity. He deserves to better himself if he feels as though he can't do that at Rochdale. Jason Taylor is also ex Stockport. As you mentioned, i'm not sure any of us know how far the Ogdens want to take the club, i'm hoping EFL1 within five years or even eventually.
