Not very professional from this fellow........indeed smacks of a lot of kidology for the benefit of the audience.
Yeah. Funny story but factually a lot of holes. If I'd have been there my first question would have been, "how on earth was one end of the pitch flooded, whilst the other end was a frozen lake?"
This was before Climate Change as well.
Also the club never employed a pie-man. The pies were delivered to the then Stadium Manager who had the task of distributing them to the kiosks to be heated up before 2pm.
And I don't recall a Spotland match v Halifax at this time of year being called off. Neither was this fixture ever a money spinner as Halifax don't travel in big numbers.
Probably an embellished tale for the benefit of listeners. There will most likely be elements of truth within it mind. We had Len Hilton on the Board in the 70's/80's and he supplied the pies (won several awards iirc). It's very possible that he spoke with Kevin Lynch following a postponement at some time of the Winter, and he could well have been annoyed at wastage but 5500 meat & potato pies is stretching it; as are ducks swimming at one end whilst skating at t'other !!
So many good pie makers in the town in that era. Hilton’s, Nicholsons, Smiths of Castleton and one at the bottom of Sparth Bottoms Road whose name escapes me among others.
