If Varane could accept he’s down the pecking order at a probably mid-table second division club as he enters what should be his peak seasons he might get somewhere. He’s wanted a move from about five minutes after he arrived and in the position you can phone it in least of all just can’t be bothered more often than not (as I see it, perhaps he’s just unfit, crap or whatever). Barcelona aren’t picking up the phone. Put some graft in.
Whether he wanted the move or not, Jim made a point on our podcast this week about getting better at selling at the right time. We’ve recruited pretty well, but timing your sales for the right moment is every bit as important to the Brighton’s of this world as the buying is. Brighton frequently sell a player for a price they never reach again, at the peak of their value, we hang on too long.
Varane had significant interest after year one, we ignored it and did a big socials campaign around a new contract with him making a little gesture on the pitch at Sunderland. He probably should have gone then - flipped for a nice quick profit. That can be just as useful in volume as a big £20m+ sale. Brentford did loads of Mepham/Hogan types as well as their big ticket Benrahma/Watkins lads.
Varane, sadly, is now losing value rather than gaining it.

Yes Tyler and Andy on the stream pointed this out. They were pealing back to the far post and we failed to pick this up several times. It’s another issue I’m guessing with injuries because they maybe aren’t so drilled into what their jobs are defensively.
But the delivery was something special nearly every time. That’s something we need to improve on. Vale should be doing better with that. He’s got the skill as I’ve seen him do it but yesterday was poor. I don’t think Southampton hit the first defender once yesterday with free kicks or corners but we regularly do it.
Bree did a number on Jimmy and Koki, charging into them and holding them BOTH American Football defence style and both those players should have been a bit more interested in breaking through that manoeuver. It was blatant and telegraphed and they should have been wise to it.

Fair enough and I guess at 23 the club gambles on him going from £5m to £15m (made up numbers for sake of argument) and getting another good season out of him. A bad gamble in hindsight but I think an understandable one at the time.
But right now, where we are and he is, what is he doing? Can forgive getting outclassed by the two they had in midfield plus Azaz but just the basic levels of effort aren’t there IMO. The second goal should embarrass him.

Didn't see the whole game so can't comment fully but in those highlights Varane did look pretty leggy. Don't know if he's not fully fit or if his heart's just not in it. You've got to be 100% committed. Even a touch of that and you'll get found out. Jimmy looked furious with a couple of those goals where people didn't track runners adequately. You've got to do the basics properly or you'll get beat.
I don’t think it’s his fitness or heart that is at question, it’s the other organ between his ears.
Usual individual player scapegoating on here after a poor result. I've watched the 90 minutes back and nearly every player on our team made a mistake or two at some point during the match.
Varane was involved in as many good things as poor. Kamara certainly was not as sharp as he was against Swansea. Our overall movement was not as good as in prior games. It's a reality-check, our players and team are not the finished article.
You have to give credit to the opposition who certainly defended their box better than we defended ours.
I have seen plenty of online comments by Southampton fans and by Tonda Eckert that we gave them a very good game despite the final scoreline.
Thought Chair looked bright and purposeful when he came on. Keep the faith!
