Dale v Overseas Teams 17:38 - Nov 8 with 2615 viewsmikehunt

The only team from outside the UK I can remember us playing is den Bosch. Yet, I heard that in 1955 we played FC Columbia Wien (I think) from Austria. Can anybody confirm this and shed a bit more light on the game?

I remember those floodlights so well, with a couple of 40 watt bulbs swaying in the wind behind the goals.

They were the source of Coventry Manager Noel Cantwell’s refusal to play thepostponed 1971 FACup tie in the evening leading to the famous victory in front of close to a capacity stadium on Monday afternoon.

The board finally approved the installation of new floodlights, erected on metal towers, in time for the following season. Ithink the first game they were used was a league cup tie with Halifax.

Didn't we play a friendly (can't remember against who, but think it was a biggish club) to 'celebrate' the introduction of the new floodlights?

Checking my records they were switched on by Matt Busby at the first round replay. The Observer reported that Halifax had agreed to delay playing the replay by 24 hours (Monday was our normal day for midweek games in the 60s and 70s) in order to allow time for the installation to be completed..

They cost 15k. Interesting in the same report the annual accounts were announced with the cub reporting a profit of 485 quid on the1969-70 season, our first following promotion to Div 3 when we topped the table at one point and finished the season 9th.

The front page of the programme that season featured a drawing of one of the new pylons with a player who i always thought was based on norman whitehead.

manager DickConnor in his programme notes refers to “Reg’s great equaliser’ in the drawn game at the Shay when “Reg hit a tremendous drive from the edge of the box’ even though the goal was reported as an own goal for what Connor argued was ‘hardly a deflection’. I bet that defender was wishing he could have been an inch to one side.

Halifaxs Chadwick was the first to score under the new lights and future Dale signing Bill Atkins put Halifax 2 up before David Cross really left his mark with two goals in the last 20 minutes in the 2-2 draw in the Spotland game...one a classic diving header captured by the observer photographer.
In the draw made prior to the replay we had drawn Newcastle away but after drawing with Halifax 2-2 we went on to lose the second replay and missed out on the bumper second round tie.

Cheers

Those floodlights didn't seem last long. Maybe it's the replacements (c.1980?, which lasted the course until the more recent improvements) that i recall having a friendly arranged by way of introduction

It wasn't the game where Bobby Charlton guested for us, and scored the equaliser late on in the Sandy Lane end? He was long retired by then but still fit and able to ping the ball about, but i think the opposition defence allowed him plenty of room to hit the ball home from the edge of the box just to make sure everyone went home happy

Wasn't that the Fred Ratcliffe Testimonial in December 1982 or another game?

I think Dale won that game 4-1 and Bobby played for one team in each half.

You mean you STILL haven't worked out why some posts get down-ticked?

I think he played more than one game at Spotland, but i'm sure one of the lads playing alongside him was Bobby Scaife because i remember watching Charlton doing a demo (in mid-game) of how to control the football first time after Scaife had repeatedly miscontrolled his passes!

Must be before my time then. A bit more research needed.

Aye, I was there. Won 4-1. Neville Southall played for the All Stars XI.
