Coventry Get Extra Tickets 09:08 - Jan 29 with 5509 viewsSaintNick

Saints gave them an extra allocation of tickets for the FA Cup game, they now have 325 more which they have sold out and will now have 5,100 supporters at the game.

Im glad to see that Saints have given them a little more rather than have empty seats at the game.

Good to see our tickets selling well too, Kingsland and Itchen virtually sold out, so generally only tickets in Chapel now available

Let's hope some of our singers move in there. There was actually a bit of singing from the Chapel end at the Man City game, so the potential is there. A few hundred of the regular singers from the Northam would probably ignite it.

Of course, it will be ironic if the home sections are sold out before the game because we sent extra tickets to Coventry.

Shame. They won't be heard at all there there above the 5,000+ away fans.

Anyway, it looks like the game is just about sold out already apart from the Family Stand.
The club should have made more seats available for home fans rather than sending extra tickets to Coventry..

so that will mean a 200 mile an hour 30min rendition of pompey get battered, followed by your support is f*cking shit - sung without irony at the 5k+ coventry fans, followed by three different speeds of oh when the saints all at once, then pompey get battered again.

And then people will talk about the "amazing atmosphere" not realising for a second that noise doesn't equal atmosphere

I remember when Chelsea and Man United were given 5,000 tickets for FA Cup games at St Mary's. They were the only fans you heard. They might as well have been playing at home So, I wouldn't worry. Nobody will hear the fans in the Itchen North or Kingsland North.

If you truly believe what you have written then you do not get football in any way shape or form and you certainly don't get being a football supporter

Again it's a quaint view of football you have which is rooted in the past when players didn't earn that much more than the fans and even got public transport home with fans at the end of the game.

Do you really think that, in the age of the made for TV Premier League, that players like Mason Greenwood, on around 100k per week, take their performance to another level due to the fact that some of the people watching them are singing songs?

there's been some scientific research into this and it proved the atmosphere does actually make a difference, and the results during the "closed door covid period" backed this up too

I hear what you say 73, but how does this explain players from all teams urging their fans for greater support as they try and build momentum?

Because they think that's all part of the job? Like kissing the club badge in front of the fans the day before putting in a transfer request via their agent.

Perhaps its is because in lockdown empty stadiums suddenly took the advantage away from the home sides and in Saints case got the crowd off their back

The impact of the crowd debate is not as clear cut as some are saying. You would think that a raucous crowd cheering the team on would drive the team to a result and no doubt sometimes it certainly helps. But it's silent at Man City for many league games, yet they still win in most games? The obvious answer there is that Man City have great players, so the influence of the crowd is irrelevant in this case is it not? They win with or without a crowd because they have great players.

Coventry will be roared on by 5000 fans, but we have better players so I still expect us to win. Likewise, at Fratton Park when we played them, the atmosphere was intense and hostile against our players but we still won 4 nil. We beat Man City at St Mary's during lockdown and Liverpool without crowds, but didn't when we had fans, despite great support of the team, so it's not clear cut for me, that having fans definitely has an impact. You would think that the fans behind the team ofcourse is better than not, but a lot of other factors come in to play.

I thought our results were better during lockdown as our players thought White Stripes is the music of the devil, and every time they heard an extract of Seven Nation Army, they would inexplicably freeze.

I’m told Vestergaard was a particular victim of this affliction.

Shame, I quite like Jack White.

Well that can't be down to any 'singing' can it? Our fans only have one song and even that's done badly.

Maybe it might be down to a stronger squad and better tactics and not anything musical?

Lots of sports science research has been conducted into why there is a home advantage in football and the conclusion is that the main reason is the influence of the home crowd on the officials rather than on the players. Fans directly behind the goal have the most influence on key officiating decisions like penalties. The reaction of the crowd can also influence yellow and red card decisions. That home advantage for teams that have large noisy sections behind their goals was lost when games were played in empty stadiums during lockdown.

Yes Our range of songs is appalling . I was watching Rangers v Ross County the other day, Rangers had about 10 songs all sung to familiar tunes from popular songs all belted out loud and proud. We really need to get our act together and no I can’t be arsed to organise anything 😃.

Even millionaires can get excited and pump a little bit more adrenalin through the system which just might make a couple of percent difference in a performance. It may be there job but its not quite the same as getting a new email at work or fixing a carburettor.

New songs are there but our dinlows don't want to sing them, they're more interested in filming themselves for social media singing the same old sh*t as everyone else.

It's actually embarrassing how little our younger generation care about how they represent the city, there's a complete lack of class there.

It's actually getting to the point i'd prefer our bingo bus lot at games than the fancy dress inbetweeners dins in the itchen north

Because it's entertainment. Fans don't need to sing songs at a football matches any more than we need to yell 'watch out he's going to shoot you' while watching James Bond at the cinema.

You miss the point, James Bond is entertainment, it is a film, the audience can't make a change to what happens.

Football is sport and the crowd motivates players, managers motivate players, if motivation is not a factor then yes you don't need a crowd, but you dont need a manager, the board can pick the team as they did 100 years ago.

Crowds change games, they influence referee's, they spur players on, using you James Bond analogy, I have see a crowd collectively shout when a player is about to be closed down and lose the ball meaning he has taken action.

As I say if you dont get it you dont get it, watch Fifa 22 or whatever its called
