Paris 2024 Olympics Frederique 08:11 - Jul 26 with 52120 viewsPlanetHonneywood

Bienvenue mes amis!

Will be glued to the screen for the next few weeks, watching anything and everything. The Olympics are my favourite sporting event ever since I got hooked on the 1972 games.

Arrived in Paris yesterday. Amazing to see so many French people smiling, being polite, and offering service without the Gallic shrug of indifference!

I know Derby is up next week, anyone else visiting? If so, lets reserve tables at the Georges V and push on from there.

Allez les Brits!!

Edit: weather not looking good for the OC tonight.

I’m sorry but Breaking is just not a sport.
I’m enjoying it though.

What about Entering?

The Madison is such a great race. I’m always shocked there aren’t more crashes, at times it looks like pandemonium.

Points gap was not big enough: good effort by KJT but she will look back at the long jump with regret. First Olympic medal for her though.

KJT won silver at her 4th Olympics. No disgrace in that.

Did anyone else see the photo from the surfing of one oc the surfers in the foreground and a full breach by a whale in the background. An iconic shot.

The grass is always greener.

As far as iconic shots go I hope Remco Evenepoel gets a framed photo of him on the finish line in front of the Eiffel Tower with his bike after the mens road race. Proper poser's finish but why the fk not.

So pleased for KJT tonight, feared she could end up having a career where it might be felt she never fully reached the Olympic potential but hopefully she feels she's done it now. Thiam an amazing athlete.

Happy for the 4x100 womens team too, Amy Hunt is a member of Charnwood AC in Loughborough so we'll claim her for Leicestershire. Quite a lot of Olympic medals for various nations coming from Loughborough students past and present, unsurprisingly given its sporting status.

No shame at all, she gave it her all but was up against a truly exceptional athlete.

Agreed.

Bit cringey tbh.

Talented no doubt, but not olympics for me.

I’d bin that off, along with walking.

Also never really too fussed by Olympics football but did have the mens final on with the cycling earlier. Any game of football that finishes 5-3 is an amazing game. Much rather that than someone go 1-0 up then try and sh*thouse the rest of the match and bore everyone to death.

I thought it was worth it’s place, the men tomorrow will be even better. It won’t be at the next Olympics though, instead there will be baseball, cricket and fcking flag football.

As for binning sports off, dancing horses and artistic swimming would get my vote.

No way, we have some of the best dancing horses in the world. Bin the Wrestling, we haven't been the same since Big Daddy and Mick McManus retired.

So you'd rather watch France v Spain over Reading v QPR?
What kind of a fan are you?

Also bin off about half the swimming. Way too many events for a sport only one country really obsesses about and few take that seriously. Should be over in 5 days or less.

Water polo also in the bin, dreadful watch.

Breaking is break dancing and equestrian is horse dancing. What about water dancing in the pool in artistic swimming? Then skateboarding and cycling dancing should be binned too

Would also rather have chariots horse racing and polo with players with a stick on horses scoring goals

Then you have beach volley, rugby sevens and 3 x 3 basketball. What about beach soccer and futsal?

Baseball, softball, cricket - why not?

If we have golf, why not snooker as they are all winning by scoring balls in a hole

Then archery and shooting, but no darts which maybe need more skills I reckon

Now volleyball - bouncing and striking the ball with your hands and try not to let it land on your side of the court, then how about sepak takraw a southeast Asian sports (google it) that does just that with the feet and head while flying in the air - more acrobatic and a lot more fun to watch

You just got me started

I was looking at how GB have done in the medals table in recent years. People spoke about legacy during the lead up to the 2012 Olympics and it really did leave a legacy. The money invested in Olympics sports has been fantastic for GB sport when you see how many more medals we win these days.

1988 - 24 medals (5 gold)
1992 - 20 medals (5 gold)
1996 - 15 medals (1 gold)
2000 - 28 medals (11 gold)
2004 - 30 medals (9 gold)
2008 - 51 medals (19 gold)
2012 - 65 medals (29 gold)
2016 - 67 medals (27 gold)
2020 - 64 medals (22 gold)
2024 - 24 medals (8 gold) so far.

1988 - 24 medals (5 gold)
1992 - 20 medals (5 gold)
1996 - 15 medals (1 gold)
2000 - 28 medals (11 gold)
2004 - 30 medals (9 gold)
2008 - 51 medals (19 gold)
2012 - 65 medals (29 gold)
2016 - 67 medals (27 gold)
2020 - 64 medals (22 gold)
2024 - 65 medals (14 gold)

Are we now in a downward trend in terms of medals?

2012 3rd
2016 2nd
2020 4th
2024 7th

Never get into the Olympics, but I'm starting to see the appeal of switching it on to get in to something totally random. Just got deeply invested in the women's basketball final

I think we’ve got loads of medals but the fewest Golds since 2004 which accounts for our lowest place in the medal table since that year.

GB medal count was in line with Rio and London, but less golds. Still pretty solid.
