He was terrific v Eastleigh and again v Southend. My Mom by a distance. What a game in tough conditions.. tricky, direct, brave on and off the ball. Superb stuff - probably his best game this season long may it continue.

Nothing formally announced. Anything other than a full replay would have rabies like frothing from Yorkshire and Cumbria Anything negative eg points awarded to Southend would lead to riots in the streets of Rochdale and Harlepool/Woking.

Probably shouldn't be, but surprised how long its taking the national league to announce their verdict on this. Particularly, as the outcome seems pretty certain, i.e., a replay. I suppose we're in no rush though, seeing as we don't currently have a home pitch to replay it on.

Still no news on this or have I missed it? Very bizarre, what could possibly be taking so long?

I very much doubt they have awarded us the win (not announced it) and Southend are appealing (before anything has been announced). Usually the appealing process begins once a decision and announcement has been made.

A counter argument would be: it's up to the ref to deem the pitch unplayable, at which point we were ahead, and same for both sides "Deserved" doesn't feature in the equation

And he deemed it unplayable before the game could finish and before a multitude of other things could have happened, which is why it should be replayed. That he didn’t beforehand was his error and the game was a farce. Both teams in a football match deserve the opportunity to complete it.

Once again: referee error doesn't feature in the equation, otherwise practically every game would be subject to review and replay This isn't just about Dale gaining three points; those who decide these things should follow precedent for games at the professional level. There may be a few instances where games are replayed after being abandoned late on, but there are plenty of others where the result was allowed to stand. Without doing any research into this, it's always been something which clubs and fans alike have understood

I’m not saying the referees obvious error should matter when it comes to a decision. It was stating an opinion that he quite obviously got it wrong by allowing the game to continue for as long as it did. Have you a list of the games that were abandoned because of the weather where results stood? It’d be interesting to look at the dates of these and whether the current rules may have seen them replayed.

No As said, without doing research; and since you're disputing it, it'd be up to you to provide the precedents for games replayed under the conditions you're specifying, compared with those games where the result stood The outcome of the Southend fixture may well be a replay; i'm simply saying it doesn't have to be, and certainly not due to the reasons you've specified [Post edited 28 Dec 2025 16:28]

The most recent example would be Blackburn v Ipswich which was, ironically, abandoned the day we were due to play Southend in September. Called off after 79 mins, replayed in December. Quick google search: There were games in 2006 at Watford and Sunderland where games were replayed after the original matches were abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch. Similar at Man City when they played Ipswich at Maine Road in 1994. Ipswich probably don’t like heading to the north west when it rains… At Dale, there was the Grimsby around this time of year in 2005. That game was replayed the following March. Having used the phrase “plenty of others where the result was allowed to stand”, it was presumed there may be information that backed that up - ie. Examples of games that were abandoned because of the weather where the result stood.

The decision will be made at the discretion of the NL, with consultation with the two clubs, so citing EFL / PL games to demonstrate precedence is irrelevant.

Yes, it’s all on the individual league to decide. The only recent example I’m aware of, though not weather related, is Scunthorpe at Eastleigh this season when there was a bad injury in added time. The game was replayed in full. Scunthorpe were also given the win against Wealdstone when the visitors “made clear our view that the correct outcome was for Scunthorpe United to be awarded the three points". Those listed were the only games that came up after a quick search looking at games abandoned due to weather. It was in reply to a previous post which mentioned a precedent should be followed at the “professional level” which indicated there were plenty where the result has stood. Was wondering where that particular precedent was illustrated, if it was specific to the NL, which games? - no National League matches came up (it wasn’t an extensive search). Not to say that there aren’t examples which others may know about. Can’t be certain of course, but would think most of the decision centres around the reason I believe it should be replayed - that both sides should have the opportunity to complete a match that hasn’t been played to its conclusion. Tbh, I doubt there are “plenty of others”, as there aren’t that many abandonments in football. Even Dale, with our pitch issues, rarely suffer from such an outcome as the games are usually postponed rather than allowed to start. The three abandoned Dale games I’ve attended were all replayed. I believe there was also an abandoned game v Fulham in 1969/1970-ish that was replayed, but I was in nappies then. Maybe older fans can remember. The only abandoned game this season which wasn’t replayed was Scunthorpe v Wealdstone, a game in which Wealdstone opted not to continue after an injury to one of their players. I’m not sure it would be easy to confirm either way, however, unless there’s a list online of all abandoned matches. Edit: just seen 442’s post. As said, abandonments are rare. The problem with such things is how rules and regs can change over time. It was absolutely a "thing" at one time that matches that reached a certain stage (i.e. around 75 minutes, though can't be sure of the precise time) and then abandoned would not be subject to replay Aa far as i can ascertain, there is no hard and fast rule - if there were, we wouldn't be having this debate The number of games that would've been abandoned due to weather conditions prior to say, 1990 would far outweigh those that were replayed (subject to abandonment time) but trying to find anything definitive isn't worth doing since it's unlikely to influence how the decision re Southend goes. The factors that would've impacted on abandonments since the start of professional football would include travel costs and the general inconvenience which probably doesn't apply to such an extent these days [Post edited 28 Dec 2025 20:26]
