| Playing Out From The Back 15:19 - Dec 13 with 987 views | Southamptonfan | Tonda has implemented a style, which has helped us move on from not having any style of play at all under Will Still which was a mess. The playing out from the back has worked because we were quick and powerful in forward runs and attack and the players have enjoyed knowing exactly what to do i.e. keep the ball and get it forward with speed. However, at Millwall.and again today, teams have done their homework and realised that if they press really high up on our own six yard box in numbers, we can't get out. We just can't get up the pitch as there are so many opposition players in our own half, blocking any route up the pitch. So what can we do? Hit the ball long to a tiny Adam Armstrong, completely overpowered by 6ft 2 defenders? When teams press high, we just lose the plot and don't have a plan B. But what would the plan B be? We can't hoof it up to a small striker. Today looked like a Russel Martin, play out from the back amd keep getting caught performance because the opposition are really high. So how do we counteract it? [Post edited 13 Dec 15:24]

That's probably why in the 2nd halves after we have had dominant 1st halves, the opposition change their style and as you say, press us harder and we have no answer. I'm not knocking Tonda by this, as we are doing well compared to previous leadership, but is this that lack of experience now starting to show?

Time will tell. Tonda has clearly done a brilliant job to turn things around, but there are question marks about how he overcomes days like Millwall and today because he had no answer. I worry we will return to nothingness in midtable and then go again next season with an inexperienced manager. I have to admit looking on with some admiration at their manager today, an experienced man who won titles in Belgium. I always think there is something to be said for experience and only time will tell, long term. I wouldn't be surprised if Tonda gets found out. Let's see how we do against Coventry next week. It will be interesting to see how we react. [Post edited 13 Dec 16:41]

Are they going to wait for Sicknote Stewart and hope he fully recovers?

When does his contract run out? With him off the wage bill we might be able to get a target man in that isn’t made of glass.

| Playing Out From The Back on 10:15 - Dec 14 with 465 views | jopreston | Best way to overcome t, is not to do it. I counted at lest 4 times yesterday we started playing it around at the back and eventually ended up playing someone into trouble, leaving them with no option but to hoof it out. So, why not just cut out the middle man and hoof it right away? Then move out defensive line up and condense the area of play? Better than passing it around, letting them swarm all over us so we have no where to go, if we had cleared it first time, they would not have the time to have so many numbers forward swarming our back lines. On top of that, it gets hoofed out eventually anyway, so why bother with 37 seconds of passing it around and risking giving a goal away? I just don't get it. It creates and does nothing. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It does make me worry about the Fratton game, as the template of how to beat us is essentially the way Portsmouth play.

| Playing Out From The Back on 08:58 - Dec 15 with 169 views | kernow | When a goal kick is to be taken and the centre back rolls it sideways to the goalkeeper has got to be the most irritating spectacle imaginable! Can anyone explain the point ? It used to happen all the time during Martin’s tenure. Sh1t grittingly frustrating it surely was. | | | |
