Looking forward to next season 17:44 - May 13 with 19721 viewsisitme

Under contract

Moss
Ebanks-Landell
Beckwith
East
Adebayo-Rowling
Bilongo
Gilmour
Pettit
Francis
Humbles
Hannant
Rodney
Dieseruvwe

We have a good spine that could challenge in League Two. I suspect Humbles might be made available for transfer.

Contracts expired

Gordon
Tutonda
Allarakhia
Gomez-Mancini
Pritchard
Barlow
Burger
Myles
McBride
Hosannah
Duku
Smith
Edwards
Henderson

Gordon signing a new deal would be excellent news. I would offer Pritchard a new deal as his versatility would be very useful. I also do not think we saw the best of him due to injury. The other players I would say thank you for your efforts, but we need to move on. Barlow maybe as a depth number 10 option?

Loans expiring

Whatmuff
Perry
Baptiste
Gordon

I would have Whatmuff and Perry back in a heartbeat, but I suspect they are destined for League One next season.

What do we need?

- Two goalkeepers – one to start and one to develop.
- Gordon to sign a new contract or a replacement if he leaves.
- Cover for Ebanks-Landell and Beckwith.
- Two starting wingbacks, preferably an actual left footer for the left hand side.
- Two number 10s with at least one who is direct and pacey like Hayes.
- A physical centre forward who could start if needed so there is not a massive drop off between Dieseruvwe and his back up.
- Another forward who could play the central role and wide if needed a sort of Henderson replacement.

A lot of this will depend on budget and how much we use the loan market.

My thoughts on those out of contract..

Gordon - yes
Tutonda - no
Allarakhia - no
Gomez-Mancini - no
Pritchard - yes
Barlow - no
Burger - yes
Myles - no
McBride - maybe??
Hosannah - no
Duku - no
Smith - no
Edwards - yes
Henderson - yes

Anyone that's a no I don't believe has EFL quality and I think the NL is their level. Taz is a shame as he works hard and is obviously very popular, but he hasn't kicked on in my eyes and struggled to really contribute past some tricky wing play.

My only uncertainty is McBride. We've seen some good games from him and I wonder if the team/play adapts next year whether we might see the best out of him. There's probably better on the market though.

Feels a bit ruthless given the circumstances but this is a huge step up and realisitcally below top 5 in NL is dross. We need to be ambitious (within budget) with a team that's reflective of the level.

I expect our playing style to adapt next year to better suit L2 with players who have more to offer.

Would also love Whatmuff/Perry back - but think they're both destined for bigger things. The positive in our favour is that they're parent clubs are now both PL sides and we've been promoted.

Your choice of who to keep is similar to what I would go with apart from I'd keep Barlow but not Burger who seems unable to withstand any sort of challenge without falling over.
I wouldn't offer McBride another deal...I think NL is his level and although talented, he just isn't strong enough or offer enough goals for his position. I might be tempted to offer Smith another deal as he has a good eye for a goal.

Releasing the rest will free up some wages which we will need to spend wisely.

I would be pulling out all the stops to sign Hayes and Bird whilst trying to persuade Whatmuff and Perry to extend their loans.

For me i would not offer hendo another year. His legs have gone and is too slow. He did score in non league but it is non league. I would rather the cap space is used on a younger striker.

Love hendo - he's a legend and retiring now on such a high would seem best.
Does he still have more to offer? Off the pitch definitely but maybe on the pitch a pay as you play contract?

Poll: So who do you believe - Hendo or the Board?

A lot will depend on what Hendo wants to do, a player / coach role may well do the trick. I'm sure the appearances record will be factoring into his thinking but he and the club need to put sentiment aside and make the best decision for all parties.

Wouldn’t be suprised if hendo signed a short term contract to enable him to break record.
Would offer smith a contract and obviously Gordon. Not sure about Barlow

Looking at the list of those under contract positionally gives an idea of what is required too (and who may be offered another deal)

DEFENDERS
Adebayo-Rowling (RWB/RB)
Moss (RWB/LWB/CB)
Ebanks-Landell (CB)
Beckwith (CB/LB)
Bilongo (LWB/LB)

MIDFIELDERS
East (CM/10)
Gilmour (CM)
Pettit (CM)
Francis (CM)
Humbles (CM/10/WB)
Hannant (LM/RM/10/LWB)

STRIKERS
Rodney (10/CF)
Dieseruvwe (CF)

Looking at that would say Henderson and one of Barlow/Burger/McBride should be offered deals to ensure the depth and consistency is required in forward areas. If Humbles isn’t staying then would keep Burger as he can play all three roles as well.

If we are looking to add a bit more flexibility with formation whilst retaining our current structure, that would point towards keeping Pritchard too as he can play multiple roles in a 3-4-3/3-5-2/4-3-3/4-4-2.

Too much turnover may impact having assessed what we have, so there’s a balance to releasing/recruiting. Especially when we obviously need more options at WB/10.

The four things in priority order for me are

1. Keeper
2. Pace centrally and out wide
3. 15-20 goal a year man to complement Mani D and i personally hope Hendo (40).
4. Centre half..

Obviously the late goals over the last 4-5 weeks and sheer ecstasy of the Wembley win has put every supporter in dream land.

Christmas wish list would include Whatmuff /Perry and Cian Hayes but Jim will have his own contacts and ideas so we all watch with interest.

Is there not a argument to say we should be looking to increase the quality of our squad now that we are stepping up a level? I don't see why McNulty would offer some of these new contracts when they've hardly featured recently. Why has Berger not been seen and why would McNulty now give him a new contract playing in the EFL? I don't see the logic of what you're saying when McNulty hasn't considered him since the Scunthorpe away game. How many games has Pritchard started this season? I think we need to set our sights higher and i reckon that's what McNulty will do. If they haven't been able to command a starting place in the National League then there's even less chance of them doing it in the EFL

The argument around retaining squad options is purely down to the current positional make up of what players remain. If he knows of better, sure he’ll get them.

On Pritchard, I don’t think he’ll ever be a regular starter but his quality makes him a stand out option. His fitness will always be the biggest issue, that’s why Oldham released him and why we may as well. His ability to impact games is undeniable though.

I agree about Pritchard but it's pointless and a waste of money if he's spending most of the season injured. It's similar to when we had Jay Bird on loan, great when he was on the pitch but always likely to break down. He's been injured most of the season at Salford also. Smiths a good option but he's also fragile and looks miles away when it comes to fitness and stamina. I don't see any of that suddenly improving playing at a higher level. He might offer one or two a pay as you play deal but the most important work McNulty will do this Summer is signing better quality players. Maybe he might offer Barlow a new deal but Berger seems to be like Allarakhia, services no longer required. How many of those out of contract looked likely to stake a permanent place in the starting eleven, very few, maybe Barlow. Next season we need that to change, we need to see real competition for places. Rodney is a good example, there's nobody challenging him for his place. McNulty's recruitment in the main has been very good, we'll have to trust him on his judgement. He'll want to have the strongest squad possible to give not only the club but also himself the best chance of success.

Here goes...

We're all familiar with the term "haunted by failure". Jim McNulty has the look of someone haunted by success. This is NOT a criticism, simply an observation, and one that's there for all to see

He looks almost skeletal. He celebrates with us, but beneath the cap it's often difficult to discern a smile. Maybe that's just normal for him... i hope so, because it might otherwise suggest there's a real struggle going on, as if he bears the weight of the world (or at least, Daleworld) on his shoulders

All managers face intense scrutiny and criticism, some of it unfair - some of it based on reality (rather than "faith" which by definition, is based on a kind of vibe) but that's the.job. Recruiting Done and Taylor to help share the load was his best move, but ultimately, the buck stops with him

He's now overcome the serious doubts hanging over him, but the challenges of the EFL only ramp up the pressure and spotlight. I hope he has a proper break ahead of next season, but the workload is relentless really and the decisions he's now having to make involve the livelihoods of human beings, the same human beings he's had to cajole into performing like they can overcome any challenge, only to now be discarded. That's the name of the game. Seeing through the hype isn't popular, just hard truths which many fans don't wish to consider. No wonder he looks haunted

Poll: What are you planning to do v Newport

Looking forward to next season on 10:45 - May 17 with 2461 views49thseason

There are a number of issues that will need to be addressed as we step up back the the EFL..the size of the first team squad i.e. the number of players capable of fitting into the first 11 seamlessly, the numbers required to run meaningful training sessions, the mix of permanent players vs loanees and youngsters forming the basis of a new academy which will also need extra staff. Clearly the playing budget will need careful examination in terms of what can be spent immediately and what is kept in reserve pending injury or unexpected opportunities.
Bowlee will also need to be taken into account as it will offer financial savings going forwards, but will require money investing there in the near future. Building is only the first cost, rates, maintenance, etc etc will also need budgeting.

I also wonder to what extent Jim will go fishing into the National League for players rather than existing league 2, 1 or players exiting Premiershicp / Championship academies. Clearly there are players capable of stepping up into L2 at lots of NL clubs. Lots to do and summer will fly by quickly..
That we have got promoted with a year to spare in the 3 year plan may also affect the way in which the Ogden family will invest going forwards. With new EFL funding incoming, they may pivot some of the money from the promotion plan to accelerate their self-sufficiency plan for the club, equally they have a new CEO arriving who may have some other ideas that she wants to persue.

Every member of that squad should go and celebrate, you can't differentiate on minutes played. We hardly saw Duku but he scored a vital goal up at Gateshead. As for JK Gordon he didn't really impress me, struggled to beat a man. Smith is another conundrum, he's scored some important goals but looks to be blowing out of his backside after twenty minutes and looks fragile. He's a impact sub who can do the last half hour but we already have one of those in Hendo if he does another year. I think we definitely need to get more pace in the team and also more height and physicality. EEL has been standout this season but he's coming to the end of his career and his lack of pace will expose him next season i think, so that area of the pitch needs strengthening. Cianne Hayes would be a great signing and worth paying a small fee for i think, add another proven goalscorer to the squad and that would see the forward line ok i think. We can't afford to waste our budget on players who have a history of being injured, we need everybody fit and up to speed and contributing.
[Post edited 15 May 10:33]

Agree that we lack pace and especially physicality in midfield. We appeared to be dominated there in most of the latest matches, and will certainly find increased pressure in this league.

Budget will be the main factor in determining the make up of the squad. Some of our current players may accept slightly lower terms than their unknown alternatives to back fill in specific positions which could be a case of better the devil you know.

We can register 22 outfield players over the age of 21 and that is window to window. We cannot bring any outfield players in once the window has closed. Any number of players under 21 and under can be registered so I suspect any loan signings will probably fit that category. I would suspect that when the academy is back up and running that we will have some youth team players who could fill some bench places in the Vertu trophy etc.

It will be a interesting couple of months recruitment wise and I am sure Jim had both a football league and national league recruitment plan.
