League One could potentially be very challenging next season, especially if Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday get their act together. Bradford could kick on and the likes of Huddersfield, Reading, Luton and Plymouth should be there or there abouts.
How long would he have to build his squad? Can he adapt his footballing philosophy to suit Stockport's current players or can they adapt to his? |
Whoever goes there, if Stockport finish in the playoffs they’ll have done very well. With an admittedly limited knowledge of what they have in their squad, top half is the only realistic expectation for a new manager. |  |

One thing that i don't doubt is that McNulty would interview very well if given the opportunity. He deserves to better himself if he feels as though he can't do that at Rochdale. Jason Taylor is also ex Stockport. As you mentioned, i'm not sure any of us know how far the Ogdens want to take the club, i'm hoping EFL1 within five years or even eventually. McNulty, Taylor and Done are surely at the beginning of a journey, having worked so bloody hard to get us where we are. Why the hell would any of them abandon what they started when they have such a massive opportunity ahead of them and the 100% backing of players, owners and fans. It makes no sense for any of them to leave. |  | | |

McNulty, Taylor and Done are surely at the beginning of a journey, having worked so bloody hard to get us where we are. Why the hell would any of them abandon what they started when they have such a massive opportunity ahead of them and the 100% backing of players, owners and fans. It makes no sense for any of them to leave. |
League 1, bigger club, better financial deals.
Now we might not agree that it’s the best thing for them now, but there are valid reasons for any manager to move upwards. Same as any other job. | |

Again a bigger club in a higher division. As Dale fans we might see things differently but Hill went to Barnsley and was immediately managing a club with crowds 3/4x bigger than ours against teams in the Championship.
As others have said, it’s all about choosing the right club and the right time to move. If anything, Stockport is a more stable move than Barnsley was then, or indeed when Parkin went to Oakwell a decade previously. | |

Money? Managing at the top end of EFL1? It makes no sense to us but it's a job to managers and players and if they can perhaps double their salary then that has to be considered. It's normal this, it's how football works and they all have a family to support. We'll all be forever grateful to McNulty for getting us back into the football league and winning a trophy at Wembley, he owes us nothing now and will go down in the clubs history. I could understand County going for McNulty, he played for them, I believe he lives in the Stockport area and he is seen as progressive, but would be a step to far at this stage of his career in management. In that he would have the backroom staff that Challioner had to help him and who are at present still there, but would he have time to implement his ideas? In that Stockport and their fans would expect at least a playoff spot as a bar minimum, and if they are not winning week in, week out and not in a playoff spots, would they turn on McNulty and demand his sacking.
I could understand if McNulty went there for financial reasons, in that he would get a higher wage and have a bigger player budget. It will be interesting to see if Stockport go for an experience league 1 or championship manager or take a risk that McNulty as an up and coming manager. If McNulty went, I would look to promote Taylor to the head coach role, supported by Done and Hendo. | | | |

I'd rather we invited managerial applications and do interviews. Then pick the right candidate. Taylor and Done might go to Stockport with Jim if he ends up there Hendo has is own business. I'm not sure we can risk the budget with a untried assistant coach having just returned to EFL2, it's too big a gamble for me. There are a lot of out of work managers available who have experience and contacts. I think Taylor and Done could do a great job running the academy. Continuity is only good if those stepping up into McNulty's shoes have the right credentials to manage and recruit at EFL2 level. [Post edited 1 Jun 20:55]

I have said on other threads what an excellent job Maher did at a dysfunctional Southend, but I would expect there are better options available should the Dale vacancy occur. My knowledge of available managers isn’t great but can’t believe there are not managers out there who have had success at L2/1 level. | | | |
