| Ian Watson Set To Become New Rochdale Manager? on 15:39 - Jun 12 by James1980 | When Watson said the playing still will be different to what is usually seen in League 2, do you the was referring to the physicality? |
I sm paraphrasing here but he mentioned possession football, with lots of final third entries, lots of shots and high energy. The players will also have to run a lot. He also referenced Klopp's Liverpool team. Take from that wat you will.

| Ian Watson Set To Become New Rochdale Manager? on 13:22 - Jun 12 by TalkingSutty | It's probably just me that, i do actually think the overall standard will be a big leap. I watched quite a lot of EFL2 last season and the football is a lot quicker, more physical and higher quality. That's how i interpreted what i watched anyway. Apart from the top seven or eight clubs i thought the standard in the National league was pretty poor. It's more apparent i think when you watch the games on television. Maybe we can revist this discussion at Xmas, it will be interesting to make a comparison and also see which of the retained players have made the step up and which ,if any, have struggled [Post edited 12 Jun 13:23]

I am not sure there is much difference between the top end of the National League and the bottom half of League Two. What you wont see are the really poor teams who you can roll over playing half arsed with a few pieces of decent play. We will face more challenging games.

Were there no teams that play that style of football in league 2 last season?

I will open the question to the room. Those who watched L2 games last season did any other teams play a style of football similar to the way Watson wants us to play?

I am not even sure we can totally predict how he wants to play. The friendly games may give an idea. It may also take a bit of shape shifting with the squad until he has the players who are capable. Sometimes you just have to do the best with what you have.

The departure of Gordon I think gives Watson a real opportunity to consider whether he wants to stick with a back 5 or revert to a back 4 with Beckwith moving back out to full back. Would then enable a midfield 3 of Petit, Gilmour and East. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| Ian Watson Set To Become New Rochdale Manager? on 18:05 - Jun 12 with 3860 views | EllDale | Looking forward to this new, faster style of play now. Maybe a culture shock for some of the retained players but they’re all good pros and have proved their adaptability. The most extreme form wasn’t that of Klopp but rather, as I understand it, the tempo favoured by the likes of Bielsa. Great to watch but after a couple of seasons at Leeds the players were shattered! | | | |

Beckwith could play left side of a two in the centre of defense no problem. Not sure he is really a left back. I do not think we have a left back in the squad. Moss could play right back, but is a bit limited offensively. I am not sure Tobi is good enough defensively to play in a back four. If we did play 433 it would be interesting how the three set up. Pettit could sit and you could have two midfielders either side pushing on. Or do you have two central midfielders and a ten off the top in the role that Camps played so well all those years ago.

Agree, that's what i was getting at. It also needs to be remembered that Watson will have a healthy budget i would have thought and he will be trying to bring in better players than we currently have. I wouldn't think anybody is guaranteed a starting place apart from maybe Mani D and Beckwith. That's what i'm hoping for anyway, a much stronger squad than last year with real competition for every position on the pitch. [Post edited 12 Jun 18:24]

Didn’t Beckwith start out as a leftback and was in the Team of the Year only to be converted by Big Jim?

I think so. I just prefer my full backs with a bit more pace and mobility. In my opinion Beckwith's best position is the left side of three centre backs as he is comfortable on the ball as an attacking threat and possess a decent shot. That position may not exist next season so he may have to find a new role.

no pressure there then, seems Watson has to improve the squad, play all out attack with a high press, Klopp type energy, finish in the top half - I'll be happy if he's half as successful as McNulty.

| Ian Watson Set To Become New Rochdale Manager? on 19:52 - Jun 12 with 3486 views | NorthernDale | It is a matter of seeing who Watson signs now, we need to a degree experience EFL players, mixed with our existing squad to solidify our restored EFL status. Hopefully he is working with the board to identify targets that will take us forward and bring them in asap. | | | |

Of course he has to improve the squad, we're playing at a higher level. If the squad last year was good enough why didn't McNulty retain them all? Watson has stated how he intends to play, you need to listen to his interviews and then criticise him for wanting us to be better, playing with intensity etc. McNulty hasn't a track record of managing in the EFL so we wont be able to compare. Watson will be managing at a higher level. I think we need to sign perhaps another eight players who are all capable of starting at Tranmere, alongside those who have been retained. They all start training with a clean slate and they are all picked on merit, everybody fighting for a place in the starting line up. Playing under different managers is pretty normal for footballers when you think how often they are recycled at clubs. Our last season in EFL2 resulted in relegation so being complacent and thinking that what we did last year will be good enough is a dangerous mindset, especially when three of our best players are no longer at the club. | Ian Watson Set To Become New Rochdale Manager? on 23:25 - Jun 12 with 2942 views | 49thseason | So at the moment we have 13 players under contract..Watson has the option of signing another 9 maybe 10 if the Rodney to FGR rumour has any substance.. He apparently wants to play at a high tempo, so we have to assume that the substitute bench has to be capable of jumping straight into the game (5 subs from 7 on the bench), particularly considering that games often run to 100 minutes plus these days, the bench is going to have to be as capable as the starting 11. Two of the players he brings in will have to be keepers, so 7 outfield players maybe 8 if Humbles goes out on loan again...Tricky to get the mix right and not much room for passengers, I assume we will use the loan system to an extent. But I think the new boss has some busy days ahead...

The same sort of recruitment and shape shifting will be happening at most clubs though. Obviously the goalkeeper position needs looking at. Defensively i think Beckwith, Rowland, Moss, Hannant are all capable. EEL is advancing in years but still can do a job, i think he needs some competition. If not starting, he would still be a good option off the bench. Midfield i think we are fine, both Petit and Frances are capable of breaking up the Gilmour and East preference so there's competition there. Up front Mani D will still be the focal point but Rodney is one i fear for if Watson is going to up the intensity of our play, does he have the fitness levels or appetite to play that way and does Smith? Not from what i've seen. So we need some serious recruitment in the final third and that also includes wide players. As you say, a busy couple of months ahead now for the manager. Then we come to Hendo, personally i think he's worth another contract for what he brings off the bench, i think it will come down to the player himself and how Watson wants to set up his squad. He might want everybody being capable of starting games and see his age and business interests as a barrier. I hope not. If that does come to pass then what a way to end your career, lifting a trophy and winning promotion at Wembley as Rochdales record goalscorer. Something every lifelong fan will be very proud to have witnessed. He definitely wrote his own script with that ending. Watson's in a great position, he's been left the nucleus of a good squad that now needs adding to with further quality players to make us EFL2 ready. I see McNuly's achievements boxed off now and filed away. To get out of the National League is probably more difficult than winning promotion to EFL1 and he brought together a band of brothers who won a awful lot of games and won silverware and promotion at Wembley, his legacy can never be tarnished now. He sits alongside Hill when you throw in the circumstances he had to deal with and he gave us our best ever day at Wembley. Comparisons going forward aren't needed, it's now a different league and the oposition will be stronger, it's the start of a brand new era and it feels as though we have the right manager in place to see things with a fresh pair of eyes and make the changes required to take us to the next level. Familiarity breeds content and due to McNultys longevity at the club and loyalty to his players i think subconsciously there's a chance that could have surfaced next season. [Post edited 13 Jun 8:41]

If you include Henderson, Smith, that would take us up to 15, Edwards would not count as he is under 21, so that would allow us to sign 7 outfield players aged over 21, plus goalkeepers. So if we sold Rodney and offload Humbles, that would give Watson another 2 spots to fill. The 22 squad system is outfield players aged over 21, goalkeepers and players aged 21 or under do not count towards the 22 as I read it.

Along with others who were never fans of McNulty, you keep restating the belief McNulty's replacement by Watson is a guaranteed positive and I again say that's a lot of pressure on a new and inexperienced head coach; and I restate I'll be happy if he's half as successful as McNulty

I haven't a clue if Watson will be successful or a guaranteed positive..if you could point out where i have said that i would be grateful. You said i keep repeating it so it shouldn't be hard to show me where. I did support Jim, never booed him at games, i found his football sleep inducing at times though. I wasn't the only one. Dont get upset because i didn't worship the ground he walked on and like most of the fanbase criticised him at times ( read the threads after the Spennymoor/ Southend/ Brackley games to see those who did). You criticised him yourself. Jim decided he didn't want to manage here anymore, he wasn't forced out of the Club. Of course i will support the new manager 100% unless i dont feel as though i can. I expect you to do the same thing also and remember it was Jim that forced the managerial change on the club, so give Ian Watson a fair crack of the whip please. You never know you might enjoy his football more than Jims. It's easier to win games in the non league than in the EFL so you need to keep that in mind when you start doing your comparisons once the season starts. Others will try doing it also, engaging in a pointless exercise to undermine our own manager in order to supoort one who walked out on the club. There's a lot of people like to pontificate about McNulty but a lot of those also criticised him along the way both in public and in private, so they're in no position to sit in judgement of others.
