| World Cup anyone? 16:59 - Jun 11 with 66997 views | Yorkshire_Dale | With all the comings and goings and excitement at San Spotty,is anyone getting remotely interested in what is just about to start over the pond? I think, looking at the England squad we have a really good chance.....there is a depth of talent without doubt. Must say though I am not getting the purple haze about the competition and prefer to follow what's going on locally. Just hope Haiti do well. What do others think? | | | | |

| World Cup anyone? on 22:27 - Jul 15 by 442Dale | Cannot think of a game where a manager has made such a tactical disaster that was so obvious yet so compounded by each move made. Sitting on the edge of the box after scoring was clearly not affecting the Argentinians as they were happy to work in the small spaces available. So we chucked on more and more central defenders. So they carried on creating chances until eventually they deservedly scored. And then they scored again even though we had 48 centre halves on the pitch. That was the definition of anti-football for half an hour. There is no way he should continue as manager after that. |
To be fair, he got us qualified with ease and into the semi-finals. Tonight, his game management once we led was gormless. Even at our level, we've seen packing a defence to defend a slim lead fail all too many times. Against a team of Argentina's firepower, such a tactic is from the Steve Eyre school of football intellect. Is anyone, anywhere, able to defend (pardon the pun) what Tuchel did tonight? He called the team's performance (with some justification) after our last win. His performance is the one to question tonight.

After taking the lead until the time they equalised we had 12% possession of the ball. We basically stopped playing and surrendered, attack v defence for most of the second half. Similar to when Italy beat us in the Euros

Why would he want to change our attacking players? The simplest option would've been to leave one player - probably Anthony Gordon - upfield rather than bring all eleven players back. That at least would have given us the chance of some respite from the onslaught which he invited upon us (same as when defending corners, btw) Once Gordon was done, bring on Rashford to do the same. Neither are defensive players, but could at least try to press and hold the ball up when booted upfield It's really not that difficult to think through, just as it isn't when defending corners at COA

The subs were merely the icing on the cake though. The tactical choice had been made to situate all ten outfield players deep in our own half. Kane or even Gordon weren’t left near the halfway as an outlet. That was a conscious decision because the players don’t drop that near to their own goal for long if the manager doesn’t want them to. Bringing on the subs only made it more obvious as we went from a 4 strung along the edge of our box to a 5. It made zero difference to the game, we weren’t any better or worse because the pattern has been set. Laughably, if you are going into a tournament looking to play like that after taking a lead, you take a proven defender at that level in the squad. So going full circle, yes, he still should have picked Maguire! It’s much better for football after such a good tournament that England don’t go through after approaching a game like that.

Yes, nothing brave about Tuchel tonight, a masterclass in how to surrender a game that you could have won had you not been frightened to death of losing it. I imagine the atmosphere in the dressing room after that would have been interesting. A total lack of ruthlessness from Tuchel and he failed to react to what everybody who watched the game could see. Reaching the semi finals is commendable but i was expecting so much more from our performances. [Post edited 15 Jul 23:48]

Well beaten by the better side could have been 4 or 5 ..hit post twice and Pickford pulled off a couple of good saves. We stumbled our way to the semis in the first place. Got further than I expected. 48 teams ..47 losers and one winner. Rooting for Spain on Sunday Hopefully Tuchel will give some of the players who ain’t played a run out on Saturday. Roll on the EFL season.. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| World Cup anyone? on 05:53 - Jul 16 with 2498 views | isitme | Shutting up shop cost us and invited pressure. There was no out ball and the extra centre back caused confusion. For the winner Martinez was unmarked with three defenders in close proximity. This was symptomatic of the later stages where we sat off, didn't press and failed to number up correctly out wide. We needed to be brave. Saka should have come on wide. The lack of a trusted option in midfield as fresh legs was also telling. We may never have had a better opportunity but like in the Euro finals against Italy we took the negative option and paid the price. | | | |
| World Cup anyone? on 06:16 - Jul 16 with 2456 views | NorthernDale | We threw the game away, yes we were under pressure, but to take off players who could get forward and bring on defenders like Konsa, Burns (who is not international level) and O'Reilly surrendered the game to them. I don't often agree with Wayne Rooney, but he admitted his subs cost us. When he made the subs, I had a bad feeling and suspected we would get beat. Tuchel said he went five at the back to tighten up, but just look at their first goal, the defenders were no where near him and I won't even mention the woeful defending for their second goal. Then Tuchel compounded the first error by bringing on Rashford and Toney, when we were 2-1 down and chasing the game with minutes to go. when he took Spence and Gordon off, he could have brought Rashford and Saka on to get forward and take the pressure off our defence earlier. We deserved to get beat, when you try to defend a 1 goal lead by sitting back, it may have worked in previous games, but against one of the best teams in the world and with Messi in it, it was poor tactics. | | | |
| World Cup anyone? on 12:48 - Jul 16 with 2067 views | Trev | Tuchel sold as the difference in these key games and last night is where he should have earned his corn. It hurts because it didnt need to be like that. We had rode out the Argentinian shit housing, grown into the game, scored a great goal and then we surrendered. | | | |

No. It’s like that episode in The Office when Finchy chucks Tim’s shoe over the building after losing in the quiz. England have played well. France are embarrassing.

Very open game, England looking more up for it but the lack of desire from the French is very obvious Still, they could've had a couple (England still wide open at times) but Henderson's had a good game Our players showing what they can do when there's no real pressure on...

True A great advert for flowing football, played in a way i haven't seen at this level since the 1970 World Cup We got this one over the line in the end but hope no-one thinks "too late" since the game circumstances were very different from the pressure of a final Edit: my MoM for England was Djed Spence, great at both ends of the pitch [Post edited 19 Jul 11:38]

| World Cup anyone? on 00:44 - Jul 19 with 1318 views | frenzied | Much better game than I expected. French certainly got a rocket at half time. Very few fouls..no bookings at all. Some terrific attacking play from both teams. The extra 24 hours the French had showed in the second half..Bellingham and Anderson steadied the ship. Bellingham will get the plaudits for the tournament..but I think Spence produced a standard far higher than any England fan hoped for..Spurs are lucky to have him. | | | |

First point has some validity, if unnecessarily described; second point irrelevant, it's a standard fixture

| World Cup anyone? on 08:12 - Jul 19 with 1077 views | NorthernDale | At times, it seemed more of a pre-season friendly then a proper world cup game. However it does raises questions, if England had not gone negative against Argentina, but had instead brought Rashord and Saka on, instead of Burns and Konsa, to put Argentina on the back foot, we may have made it to the final, instead we tried to defend for thirty minutes. Even the Argentinian manager was surprised that England did not use Saka. I thought Watkins did okay last night, but is Cole Palmer, who was left at home is potentially a better bet at International level in the long-term. Ivan Toney did now't and another one who was poor, was Eze. I must admit, I had my doubts when Spence was included in the squad, but he emerged as an exciting talent. | | | |
