| Now confirmed. on 22:41 - Jun 18 by 442Dale | Maybe not, it’s more that I feel we need players who can fit our structure first and foremost and hopefully ones which make us a bit more flexible. Not that they have to come from a particular league. Who’d have thought a signing like Whatmuff would come off like it did? Prior to the season, I believed we needed a permanent experienced keeper after having so many on loan the year before. Even during the campaign I thought it was a mistake that we only had Whatmuff with emergency loanees for the odd time he was missing with England. Thought it would come back to bite us at some stage. Completely missed the mark on that one! The decsions made at the club were spot on. |
What happens if the structure doesn't work in EFL2 and we are losing too many games. What would you suggest the manager does then, bearing in mind he's prioritised those players because they are suited to that one system.? You're not bothered which league they are recruited from but you would be if he brought the majority in from non league and they struggled to compete at EFL level. He would be righly criticised and so would the club. Professional footballers should be capable of switching systems during the game and i'm fully expecting Watson to recruite with that in mind. Why would you persist with something if it's clearly not working just to prove that your wedded to only one way of playing? I'm hoping the manager signs the majority of players on their experience and quality alone and not fixate on signing them to play to just one system. In fact i find that suggestion a bit ludicrous, its putting the egg before the chicken. Sign quality players, give them the ball and inject some power, pace and energy into our performances. Get some fast wide players and infiltrate our opponents penalty box at every opportunity. Sign another couple of goalscorers who can stay fit and complete a game of football from start to finish..Rodney, Smith, Hendo, Duku, four players who weren't capable of doing that, poor management. You're getting bogged down with tactical mumbo jumbo and obsessed with just one way of playing. I don't think Watsons football will look like McNulty's, you can see thst just by watching footage of South Shields. He's already stated we will be playing a brand of football different to most of EFL2 and mentioned Jurgen Klopp in the same interview, that signals his intentions and hopefully banishes walking football and passing the ball between each other just for the sake of it to the bin where it belongs. Football to stir the passion and get the stadium rocking is what we want. The feeling that you're watching a football match and not a game of chess. Look what Morecambe did to us in one of our final home games, i hope Watson has watched a replay of that and also the Hartlepool away game. Nobody wants to see football played like that. I've had enough of watching home games and waiting until the 72nd minute for our first shot on goal, or the 95th minute in the case of York at home and that was a must win game. You wont get away with it playing like that in the EFL. [Post edited 19 Jun 7:17]

Every manager has their structure and systems. I good ones evolve it year on year and tweak it within the season to exploit the opposition. It was telling in the most recent interview the comment about Watson's tactical awareness and in effect 'outsmarting' the opposition manager. That level of nuance helps to win games, rather than being wedded to a rigid approach. Do I think we will play a possession based game? Yes. Will it be exactly the same as last season? No, I think/hope we will press more and have a bit more pace in the team as this opens up more options. In terms of recruitment the data will have a list of potential signings to suit a myriad of paramaters as long as your arm. It is about finding the right players. Morecambe had a squad filled with Football League experience but got relegated and I suspect if we signed exclusively National League North Players the same would happen to us. Magnay's interview says that we are close to making some signings. Until these are announced and we actually play some games speculation on systems etc is just speculation. We have a core that we can build on, so it would be sensible to play a similar way, but how many of that core will still be at the club next season? In any organisation regime change at the top results in staff turnover. Football clubs are no different. Outside of Hannant and Francis, Watson has no ties to our existing squad. Exactly, that's why i'm hoping the manager makes his selection judgement on what he sees on the training ground over the Summer. He has no loyalty to any of the retained players and they all start with a clean sheet including the new recruits. The cream will always rise to the top and those who can't reach the required standards for one reason or another will fall away. We already know one thing, the players are going to have to have the capability and desire to run, run a lot by the sounds of it. So fitness levels will be the first requirement. We could win games last season by not playing particularly well and in a lot of them we controlled the tempo and dominated posession against opponents who were limited not only technically but also in fitness levels. I don't expect to see any of that next season, we will probably be underdogs in the majority of games. I also think it will be season two when Watson gets the squad of players that he wants [Post edited 19 Jun 7:38]

We definitely need more pace in the side, watching how South Shields attacked that was an obvious attribute they had. Cameron Ogden’s interview explained how MRKT plays its part well and it’ll be a proven resource that Watson to get players who meet what he needs. Does sound like they had targets already though too. You’re right though, until we see some games everything is an assumption and we can only go off the interviews with Watson, Magnay and Ogden about how we might look. There will definitely be changes that are designed to improve us.

| Now confirmed. on 21:21 - Jun 18 by isitme | If we keep the same formation we need quality starters in the following positions: Goalkeeper Right centre back Both wing backs Both ten positions Then back ups across the back three, centre forward and ten. All should be challenging to start. A change of formation will bring different challenges recruitment wise. Moss can be a defensive full back, but other wise do we have a full back who can play in a back four? |
I apologise if I have caused a stir, but we need to look to progress and not survive in league 2, but look at Oldham for example and become a top half team in the first place. I also accept that there are some decent players in the National league, like Zac Blunt, but there are some, who may look good in the National league, but find the step up to the EFL a step to far and can we take the risk, because we can only have a squad of 22 outfield players aged over 22. I would also accept that some experienced EFL that will not fit into our preferred system or just are not good enough, so Watson and Magnay will need to make some difficult decisions. I do think that McNulty recognised this in releasing 10 players, who he must have felt, could not make the step up or were not good for the EFL, Pritchard was good enough, but is injury prone. Recruitment possible considerations: GK - Toby Savin (Wigan) - or Harrison Male (York) who was outstanding last over the last two seasons for York, but the question should be asked why have they let go. CD - as somebody suggested on another post, Kerr (Wigan), but there is, Magloire (Port Vale) but he was underwhelming last time at the Dale. I would also to bring in a couple of under aged 22 CD's, possibly getting Nevett back from Peterborough. WB - this is possibly the hardest positions to fill or do we go for straightforward fullbacks and is it possible to recruit both WB's & FB's. At the moment we have Beckworth, who I hope we make a successful step up from the NL, I like Moss, but some would argued he was less effective in the WB role. I would also look to sign if possible two dedicated wingers, like Hayes, who could operate as a No 10. W Strikers - a decent No 10 will possibly cost money, somebody like Rush (Boreham Wood) who could possibly make the step up, but as Peterborough found out with Conn-Clarke, this is not always the case. I will be interested to see how Rodney gets on this season, I feel that using down the middle as a battering ram, he could be a success, yes he may not be a 90 minute player. However we must respect Watson's judgement and hope he gets it right, [Post edited 19 Jun 8:01]

Our recruitment over the past few seasons has been really good. The likes of Gordon, Beckwith and Gilmour came in, improved and became mainstays of the team. Mani took our goal threat up to another level and other players played roles. Gomez-Mancini was the only real failure, but he was a low wage risk. Other players such as Duku were short term, late season squad fillers so I would not place too much weight on them. Since we have used MRKT the success rate of signings has been better. It will never be a total success but it does help when a squad is not saddled with players who are unplayable eating up a large chunk of the wage bill.

Oldham struggled during the first half of last season and looked as though they were being sucked into the relegation battle. As the season progressed they strengthened and improved. I'm expecting us to see gradual improvement and hopefully have a similar season. Latics have made a few decent signings and i can see them being in and around the Play offs next season. I hope we go on a similar journey. One thing we have all agreed on during this thread is the need to inject more pace and intensity into our performances, coupled with a similar style to how we played under McNulty i think that will be enough. It was always the missing ingredient for me but in the end it wasn't needed, we won a reccord number of games and promotion at that level playing the way we did. [Post edited 19 Jun 8:50]

I think it's probably more fair to say the decisions made re: the keeper proved to be spot on, but could easily have ended up biting us on the arse Let's see if the new management see the keeper situation differently. If they do, and get it right, they will be "spot on" too [Post edited 19 Jun 12:46]
