I must admit, I thought his interview was better then Watson's interview, in the way he spoke and explained himself.

Don’t get the argument around needing EFL experience. It was the same when it was apparently crucial we got someone who had managed in the league too. Not to say they won’t get players who have played a lot of games in L1/2, but it’ll be whether they can fit the way we play and add to the team.

Interesting how he recognised the stages of development Dale went through. It’s clear there’s an aim to continue and improve on the way we play. It also fits the Cameron Ogden comments on the podcast around how they recruit to fit culture.

Do we want ascending or descending players? Hodges and Williams were names. Dawson and Allen were not. [Post edited 18 Jun 20:06]

Of course it's important to bring players in who haven't just plyed their trade in non league, surprised you can't see the logic in that. Why wouldn't you recruit players who are proved at the level you are competing at? The management duo have both been involved in the EFL, at MK Dons and also in a playing capacity. We saw what happened with Stockdale and his lack of managing in the EFL was what everybody cited when the results didn't arrive. We also need better players than we currently have, shouldn't that be the remit at every stage of recruitment, especially when you are recruiting to play at a higher level? If they are from EFl2 or EFL1 then you would think they will be perfectly capable of playing how the new management duo wish to play. Most of the players we have contracted to the club played in the EFL but then dropped down to the National League, let's not elevate them to a higher standard out of some sort of loyalty. I think that's what you're doing. That team that won at Wembley needs strengthening, they can't play like that in EFL2 so improvement is needed. The management duo aren't daft, they will sign the best players they can afford, their jobs will be on the line if they don't..it's called ambition. I'm hoping we will see a upgrade of at least five new players in the starting line up come the first league game and those players to be of a higher standard than we currently have. That's normal recruitment when you have just been promoted to a higher league, you have to strengthen. [Post edited 18 Jun 20:50]

Was just a response to that we need to get in “decent EFL players” and said that it’s not to say we won’t bring in some some with L1/L2 experience (as we did last season), it’s that would rather have the right player that fits how Watson and his staff want us to play. Which I’m sure they’ll already have lined up. There was no mention of our current group who I feel we can improve on with additions in the right area. Stockdale actually had a more comprehensive coaching career in the League than Watson prior to joining Dale. First team coach and caretaker manager at Sunderland and was again in the coaching set up at West Brom under Allardyce for a while. [Post edited 18 Jun 20:51]

Stockdale didn't recruit very well. You can have as many different syles of football as you want but it always comes down to the quality of the footballers you have in the club. Exhaust the playing budget and sign the best players available. The Ogdens have stated that they want to take the club into the EFL1 in the not too distant future, to do that they will now have to keep adding quality to the squad in every transfer window and competition for places will increase. We also need players with the potential of a big sell on value, the only player we have with a possibility of that is probably Beckwith but he will still have to keep improving. It's all about opinions and i think the players we have at the club will all contribute in different ways next season but they will all be challenged for their place in the starting line up and that's how it should be. I think some fans think they will make the step up no problem and i respect their opinion, i don't agree with it though. I'm hoping for maybe two or three non league signings who the manager thinks can make the step up but the rest to come from the EFL.

If we keep the same formation we need quality starters in the following positions: Goalkeeper Right centre back Both wing backs Both ten positions Then back ups across the back three, centre forward and ten. All should be challenging to start. A change of formation will bring different challenges recruitment wise. Moss can be a defensive full back, but other wise do we have a full back who can play in a back four?

Yeah would see that as what’s required at present. Listening to Magnay today it’s clear because of their knowledge of our side and how we played under McNulty that they’re already aware that it aligns with how they want to play as well. Their own coaching will then introduce any differences to that. They’ll obviously have targets to improve on the squad and fill the gaps. One thing I am looking forward to is seeing we can be more adapatable between different systems. Total guess, but we might see both 3 and 4 at the back used regularly.

Agree with that. There's a lot of work to do but those retained players could well thrive next season, especially being supported by other quality players. I hope they do obviously. There were too many players who were guaranteed places last season even when they weren't performing very well. Not enough squad players staking a claim. You could more or less name our strongest eleven from the first game of the season and only injury dislodged players, nobody really came out of the squad and staked a claim to start every week. I have no problem at all with us taking a punt on a couple of non-league players ( particularly if they're under 21 ) but it's over optimistic to think we can get by without signing some proven League pro's. If Ebanks-Landell and Rodney find the form of their last League Two campaign , we'll need reliable replacements on hand.

And not saying we shouldn’t be looking at players who currently play in the league, it’s that there’s already a trust that whoever we sign and where from, that the new management have a clear idea what they want. Not seen any L1/2 players rumoured or even really suggested, does anyone have names of those who would fit how we want to play?

That's the managers job not the fans. The manager and Club will have a extensive list of available players and it sounds like MRKT will also be heavily involved. Playing out from the back and through the thirds isn't new, i would imagine a lot of players have experience of playing it. Football with a bit more urgency and intensity though according to the manager, really looking forward to it but expecting it to be a tough season. There are a lot of big clubs in EFL2 compared to the National League. No point trying to make comparisons with McNulty and last season because the standard will be better and the tempo of how we play will be different according to Watson, even how we set up defensively. "it's over optimistic to think we can get by without signing some proven League pro's" Nobody has said that. Maybe not, it’s more that I feel we need players who can fit our structure first and foremost and hopefully ones which make us a bit more flexible. Not that they have to come from a particular league. Who’d have thought a signing like Whatmuff would come off like it did? Prior to the season, I believed we needed a permanent experienced keeper after having so many on loan the year before. Even during the campaign I thought it was a mistake that we only had Whatmuff with emergency loanees for the odd time he was missing with England. Thought it would come back to bite us at some stage. Completely missed the mark on that one! The decsions made at the club were spot on.
