Formation Conundrum - Fans Choices? 16:37 - Aug 16 with 18297 viewsbeat_the_bishop

Interestingly, scanning across various teams set up, including Stockport, York, Oldham, Salford and Barnet (and many others) all have a back four.

I know the general consensus is to revert to a 3 and wingbacks either side and I full understand why… it seems the trend at the moment is a 4 which if we pursue it, I do wonder how we would look along the lines of the below…

Ramming
Moss Ebanks Maguire Beckwith
Petit
Smith Gilmour Hayes
East
Mani

Obviously the above is based on fitness and availability.
With the squad as it as today and injuries and as others have mentioned just familiarity I would go...

Ramming
Moss Ebanks Wilson
Tar Hannant
Gilmour
Duberry East
Brown
Mani D

The above still doesn’t fill me with confidence but I think it’s more likely to sure us up a bit.

Wilson hasn’t impressed me on his brief cameos but he needs a start and go from there.

Hendo for brown if he isn’t happy in the 10 after 60 minutes.

What would others do?

We've hardly seen Wilson so it's hard to judge. At Bradford he received the ball near his own goal line and then tried to slalom out of his own penalty box, trying to dribble through about three Bradford players in the process, obviously he lost the ball in a very dangerous area. Socrates did something similar once in the World Cup but he didn't lose the ball. I'm hoping that was youthful exuberence from Wilson and we don't see it again. It's why Premiership clubs loan out their players to lower league clubs, they can learn on the job. He's not short on confidence.

After watching the Community Shield Arsenal were in effect playing the same formation that we play, but Odegaard ran the show in the number 10 role. We do not have a player to do that and our midfield players were often split with East deeper and Gilmour more advanced. There were no easy passes, too much space and too much disconnect.

When Hayes and Smith are available we have wide players with quality but we do not have solidity in midfield or at the back. I think we need a three in midfield with one holding in front of the back four and then one either side. That reduces the space and gives an easier passing option.

Baba the holding midfield player. Both East and Gilmour were poor yesterday, took the easy option by offloading the ball back to the defenders instead of trying to effect the game. Maybe give Frances a start for one of them next week. I'd drop Rodney to the bench also and maybe try Hannant in the number 10 position. Moss can also start the game. I'm assuming Watson will stick to four at the back.

With the emphasis on Tobi getting up the wing and supporting the attacks. Gilmour to drive forward with the ball from midfield rather than looking to offload a safe pass. Use the long ball up to Mani to relieve pressure and move us up the pitch, make sure Hannant gets around him for the knockdowns. A emphasis from every player to win the second ball and their personal duals. Put the ball in the box at every opportunity.

Waller

Tobi. EEL. Wilson. Moss

Adeeko

Gilmore Frances

Hannant

Mani D Silcott- Dewburry

Not sure it’s a formation issue. Out of last season defence in the NL, we’ve lost Whatmuff, Gordon and Perry. Who all started L1 games yesterday. Are the replacements of the same caliber? Not on yesterday’s evidence

re. the original post, both Stockport and York played with a back three and wingbacks yesterday. Stockport appeared to have played very similarly under McNulty as when he was here - Gordon impressing supporting attacks from RCB.
Not sure about the other sides.

Moss-EEL-Wilson as the back three.
TAR and Hannant as wingbacks.
The rest can be established after that, but everyone will at least know where they are positionally in our own half allowing us to defend better and start attacks with less distance between players.

It can also quickly shift to a back four mid-game too if TAR drops back and everyone shifts along one.

Replacements of that calibre* would be highly unlikely

This was something that was apparent to most when JM and his backroom staff upped sticks

Even with McNulty and those players still in situ we needed at least five players of proven EFL quality. The team that was promoted wasn't good enough at this level, too many players not up to the required standard and consistent enough, the peeformances against Morecambe, Tamworth and Boreham Wood confirmed that. Seven of those that started at Wembley, started at Newport. Apart from Gordon i'm not sure we had any other players who would walk into many other teams in EFL2, maybe Mani D. Obviously Perry and Watmuff were never our players anyway.

We now have Baba, Smith, Hayes and a fit Beckwith who i think are quality at this level, hopefully Maguire and Silcott Dewburry might also fall into that catergory. So if we had all our players available i think we would now be a lot stronger than we were last season. Even better if the players could grasp what system they are supposed to be playing and implement it. We also had Jim, a manager who the players loved to death and that was what probably got us over the line last season. Some of the players look like they are missing Jim but that's not Watsons fault. They worked hard to get us here, hopefully they'll find some fire in their belly's and reap their rewards by proving their worth.

Yes, players recruited by the previous regime having to adapt to a different, perhaps less sympathetic voice

The harsh reality of being a pro footballer. Hell, just harsh reality, full stop

Too many players playing like wallflowers. There's not many from the North East who don't understand these realities, and don't think we have any north-easterners in our squad... well, apart from Jenkins whose injury started the downward spiral that Watson now has to pull us out of

Dale fans can moan all they like, but last season was exceptional. One minute from the end at Wembley and we were still in the NL, JM would likely still be here

I'm prepared to give Watson the absolute benefit of the doubt. He took a risk, leaving his promising spell with South Shields and moving out of his comfort zone, and when i said earlier that "his career with Dale starts here" i was referring to his own likely understanding of what he's faced with smacking him in the face

As an exile I got to the Tranmere game and from what I saw this is the formation I'd go for with our current squad

Waller (Ramming is nowhere near confident enough and is rooted to his line)

3 central defenders

Maguire Ebanks Beckwith

Wing backs

Moss and Wilson

Midfield

Adeeko

Gilmour and East

Forwards Mani and Silcott

up the dale

Surely the horrendous injury situation must affect the system somewhat?.. " When life throws lemons, make lemonade" seems to sum up where we are.. Personally I think Ebanks is better in a 3, there is no confusion about who is marking who ( see the second goal yesterday) , he just has to deal with whats in front of him but to be absolutely honest, ideally he would be on the bench making way for Magiure, who I am hoping has the presence and attitude to organise the defence into a decent unit, with Adeeko providing defensive cover in midfield ... I still think we should have gone after Deon Woodman when he was at Wealdstone but he has apparently gone to Bromley for an undisclosed fee...And when Watson has sorted the defence, maybe he will think about scoring goals and perhaps how to score first for a change..Nothing says "come and have a go at us" more than waiting for the other team to start attacking......

I would agree with the formation, with one exception, I think Mani is to light weight and easy pushed off the ball at EFL level, I would go with Rodney or Brown as central striker, when we have people back from injury.

As Maguire and Beckwith could be missing next week against Crawley, next week, I would be tempted to go for:
Waller
TAR EEL Moss Sherring Hannant
Gilmour Adeeko East Francis
Brown/Rodney
Subs
Ramming, Silcott-Dulberry, Wilson, Dieseruvwe, Brown/Rodney, + Hendo & Smith (if fit)

The manager said in his post match interview on BBC Bolton
that he doesn't think any of the missing players will be back next week, he was asked that simple question by the person doing the interview.

The last couple of months have been a bit farcical since Watson was appointed. Very slow in signing players, signing players with poor injury records, signing players who aren't fit enough to play, multiple serious injuries, a player on his honeymoon when he should be working, a lopsided pre-season fixture list with only two home games against lower opposition, seven games played including friendlies, no games won and sixteen goals conceded, three goalkeepers in the matchday squad at Newport, key positions that still haven't been addressed, a performance that left me wondering if the manager has already lost the dressing room. It was embarrassing to watch but more importantly very worrying. Completely unprepared for the first game of the season in what ultimately could have been a 'six pointer'.

All of the above is sucking the life out of the club and killing the momentum before the season has even started and it's not all just down to bad timing and bad luck. There is no semblence of a plan on the pitch, the players look lost and devoid of any fight or spirit. The body language of Tobi Rowlands speaks volumes, what's happened to the happy go character that epitomised the spirit in the dressing room? I don't like to see footage of the manager whistling at the players during training neither, that's not a good way of commanding respect, they're not dogs.

I don't own the club but if i did the alarm bells would be ringing and my first port of call today would be with the senior players. Then i'd be having a meeting with the manager and his assistant and if there isn't a relationship with the players i'd thrash out a financial settlement. Best to do that early rather than waste all the budget and precious time. There are good managers currently available if the club moved quickly who will sort out the mess and keep us safe. Unfortunately that's what the performance at Newport has done to me as a fan, losing the game is immaterial, it's the manner in which we lost it to a very average team. You expect improvement through pre-season, there hasn't been any. Those players weren't playing for the manager on Saturday, they didn't look interested. It's pointless trying to sugar coat it, i think Watson is out of his depth.

I would have to agree, Saturday could be an early tipping point, if we don't beat Crawley and even worse, if we lose. Yes, people will say it is just the start of the season, but has you suggest the signs where there at Newport.

A lot of what you have said is fair. The Henderson one is the best example though of the club not exactly supporting the situation either. Watson hasn’t been involved in that and is probably far from impressed too. When you have an 8 week period to get married you don’t do it as the season restarts. In addition, it sets the wrong example.
Clearly, he was retiring and has been convinced to stay by on by the board. But it doesn’t look great. The Hayes signing wasn’t a Watson one either. So there’s some work to be done on relationships and leadership.

Either way, your point about the senior players holding the clout and waving Watson in his way already is extreme. I want Senior players in my club to lead by example. If they can’t handle a change of management in football they picked the wrong sport/career. York players weren’t sulking on Saturday were they?

I’d question the attitude of the players more than the manager.
And arguably it’s the ones who maybe sulking the ones I suspect may well be out of their depth in the EFL.

There’s a certain level of empathy I’d have for both Watson and the players at the current time after one league game.

Watson has obviously built a good reputation in the game with his work and levels above and below where we currently are. The Dale job (and that at Southend where he was linked) were the next natural step. When compared to a Hill or a McNulty, the two most successful managers in the club’s history, he was much further along in his coaching career than either.
He’s come into a club where the squad has been that well developed over time through a series of focused, process based management that any change was going to take time to implement.

The players themselves have become that used to working for someone who implemented those processes, who instilled the same steely determination and focus on winning whilst improving, that the sound of another voice with different ideas may have been jarring. They’ve seen the results of working in an environment which was built so well, it would only be natural to think “well we know what works”.

There was a lot of talk in the ‘League 2 finish’ thread about how it would take time over the season for the changes to bed in, how it could be a struggle initially but we’d probably improve as the campaign goes along. A lot of that has more chance of happening without so many injuries and with the flexibility in approach that is discussed in this thread.

The structural issues on the pitch were there preseason, at Tranmere (when there was a real feel good factor after winning the tie) and at Bradford last week too. That’s where manager and players should be admitting something has to be different.

However, for any progress to be made, there has to be an admittance that Newport was unacceptable by all parties. There’s not one supporter who wasn’t worried by what they saw on Saturday and any repeat would be extremely damaging.

Yes, i suspect that's exactly what Watson's found himself up against

If they don't react well, he needs to be ruthless, which in itself will upset a good few fans, and will take months of hard graft to shift the narrative. He's not being given two minutes. Above all, the board need to hold their nerve

It's clear his honeymoon period is over already, regardless of senior pros having theirs at an absurd time

I feel we have a decent squad, yes some may not be up to EFL standard, but we have a squad that is capable of getting results. Yes, we have people missing through injuries or issues over fitness levels.

However the previous games have raised questions about fitness standards, team selections and tactics, which could be written off as pre-season or playing a league 1 team. However the defeat at Newport exposed all of the above and that is down to Watson, is coaching methods, is he capable of explaining his tactics and has he the ability to adapt his tactics to the players, and crucially is he listening to the senior players and seeking their advice.

McNulty used Hendo (a senior pro) in a coaching role and this combined with experienced pro's like Taylor and Done benefited the team, and they had connections with other clubs. Watson as not got the coaching back up from experience pro's to help him and this is down to Watson.

In an attempt to be fair, on both managerial teams and players, can we deal with facts please?
We do not know what goes on on the training ground. The senior players may or may not have a significant input into the day to day work. It’s all guesswork.

For clarity:
Where was it stated that McNulty used Henderson in a coaching role?

Where is the evidence Watson hasn’t the “ back up from experience pro's” to support him?
Both Magnay and Lillis have played a significant amount of games.

Do you acknowledge that Watson and Magnay both have first team coaching experience at various levels that actually are equal to or surpass what McNulty, Done and Taylor had when they took up their roles at Spotland?

Whilst again acknowledging the justifiable concern around what we witnessed at Newport, there’s a real danger of making a not great situation worse with guesswork. I accept that people are entitled to their view, it’s all about opinions. But making stuff up without evidence is a step too far would be my opinion.

It's also down to those who did their due diligence and appointed him. He's never managed or had to recruit at this level, neither has his assistant. The situation with Henderson is amatuerish, it shouldn't be happening. Book your wedding in early June just in case you have signed a new contract to carry on playing, players have six or seven weeks break during the Summer.

On his return, Hendo is unlikely to be anywhere like match fit, but nevertheless, i expect him to roll his sleeves up and start grafting again in the Dale cause. He could go a long way to helping Watson settle into the club too, by showing the right example both on and off the pitch

Poll: What are you planning to do v Newport

It's also down to those who did their due diligence and appointed him. He's never managed or had to recruit at this level, neither has his assistant. The situation with Henderson is amatuerish, it shouldn't be happening. Book your wedding in early June just in case you have signed a new contract to carry on playing, players have six or seven weeks break during the Summer.

But the same can be said for McNulty at Stockport. Where do you stop? They won their game and put on a good performance and now they are going to win the league. Yet the theme over recent weeks from them is worried about his signings because majority have been ‘underwhelming’. Gordon being one of them.

A solid win on Saturday against Crawley, a few players back from injury, a couple more signings and a bit more clarity starts to appear.

Near on 1,000 fans chanting his name at Tranmere and Bradford, I want the same on Saturday before a ball is even kicked. We play the biggest part in all of this. Confidence is everything and Mani D on the end of a well worked cut back down the right had side on the 11th minute and we are back, like properly back.

Stockport lost in the Play Off final a few months ago, they could have easily been a Championship Club. McNulty has inherited a very good squad of players at that level and has added to it. He's also got a very experienced network of people around him. The owner of Stockport has spent £50 million in the last five years, his situation is different to Watsons. The hard work had been done by Challinor and hopefully Jim will carry it on. He's walked into a fantastic job.

I hope you're right about Saturday but it's going to need a massive swing of form and attitude from the Newport game. Just conceding less than two goals in the game would be a positive and maybe give us a chance of picking up a point or three. We waited three years for that first game back in the EFL and what the manager and players delivered was a insult to the fans and the owners of the club. I'm willing to draw a line under it now and i'll obviously be willing them to succeed against Crawley but there can't be any more performances like that again. The players should have been chomping at the bit against Newport. In keeping with the theme of the thread, a back three is required but i can't see Watson changing from a four.
