Keeper aside, they were signed as squad players. Put Beckwith, Bilongo and perhaps Maguire in their places and we'll see whether our first choices are more solid - which then impacts the keeper's confidence too
McNulty never had to play a second-string defence against a fit and fast forward line (although he chose to against Brackley, who weren't fit and fast but still beat us...)
This is what Watson is having to deal with and puts the rest of the team under pressure. We can't judge him until he can field something like his preferred XI, and that could include Pettit, Hayes, Jenkins i.e. half his side is missing. I'd defy any of you to perform well with one arm and one leg tied up, in front of an expectant crowd [Post edited 25 Aug 9:33]

Watson signed Maguire though who has a history of recent injury problems. He only played 10 games last season and hasn't played once for us since he arrived. Even if he's brought Sherring here for squad purposes he looks a bad signing. He is so ponderous on the ball and his distribution looks weak. We could do a lot lot better. At least Liam Hogan looked like he wanted to defend. |  |

Trying to "sell" being a squad player is something i've wondered about
The player themselves will likely know their place in the pecking order and then have to take their opportunities when they arrive. Sherring hasn't - his early loss of the ball on Saturday was a real confidence shaker
My point is: the "lot, lot better" you think would be available on our budget are snapped up early, and Watson just didn't have time to take a long, hard look at what remained. People on here were whingeing about a lack of signings. Perhaps Sherring, even Maguire, were among the better options of what remained after taking over. Ideal? Obviously not. So we have two choices... go with what we were dealt when faced with a short-term recruitment window and try to bolster their confidence, or get on their backs
We're not talking about players who've been here a while and not pulling their weight - that's unacceptable, and i'm among the first to call it out [Post edited 25 Aug 9:53]

Semantics aside, Watson has made a rod for his own back by stating that he doesn’t sign squad players.
He has been unfortunate with injuries but as has been previously stated, Maguire is a perennial sicknote so I don’t think he can chalk that one up to bad luck.
Sherring looks all at sea to me. And Wilson (as are a lot of young Premier League loanees), looks like a gamble that may not pay off.
With Bilongo back and if we are ever to revert to a 4 3 3 again, I would look at TAR on the right, Bilongo on the left and Moss and EBL playing in the centre. Moss may not be the tallest but I trust him more than the aforementioned CBs |  | | |

Couldn't disagree with that. We don't know the full circumstances of Maguire and Watson wouldn't be the first to sign someone who, when fit, could be a real asset, but a question for the forum perhaps
My point remains (edit) about the "squad player" thing: no-one will be labelled as such, it's up to them to challenge the manager not to leave them out when others are available. Sherring hasn't done that. None of this is ideal but expectations should've shifted the minute McNulty walked. We'll know more with the three games between now and the forum [Post edited 25 Aug 12:00]

After seeing that formation at Newport, I did not think it worked and would only use the formation, when Maguire or another CD is able to fit into the role, then Moss can drop into the right back role, because TAR is not a right back, Yes Moss would be better in CD then Sherring, but the midfield was over run at Newport with the gap between Gilmour and East allowing Newport to walk through and the three up front struggled.
So at the moment, we must play a system that suits the squad available, ie,
TAR and Hannant as wing backs, with Moss, EEL & Bilongo in the centre of defence to keep the defence as tight as possible. | | | |
