You always know a proper legend when multiple generations associate them with a different iconic character. Whether he's Picard or Charles Xavier (and I thought he was particularly great as a psycho redneck in Green Room) - what a great legacy to leave.

The curse of I, Claudius strikes again. Only Derek Jacobi, Brian Blessed, Siân Phillips and Christopher Biggins to go.
He was in Kenneth Clark’s Civilisation, acting out some Shakespeare. In 1969.

I'm presuming this was tongue on cheek - not entirely sure it's a "curse" when a universally loved guy dies at 86, one (Phillips) is alive at 93, another (Jacobi) is still working at 88, and Blessed has just turned 90 and still apparently a force of nature.
A couple of the others (Bernard Hepton, Barbara Young,) made it into their 90s
Think I might skip over the Biggins issue, though he was terrific as Nero.
James Faulkner (Herod) also still going at the age of 78
I Clavdivs was where I first saw Stewart, and he was seriously scary, but the thing that really impressed me was his cameo as Karla in Tinker Tailor - just one scene opposite Alec Guinness, with no words, and he dominates it utterly, though Guinness is brilliant in the framing scene.

A sad day for Sci Fi fans indeed. Really made STNG the best of all ST series when I'd imagine most people thought it wouldnt live up to the original show, especially with a Shakespearian actor playing the Captain of the Enterprise, but it worked so well.
I got to see him live on stage in 2005 when he brought is one man show on A Christmas Carol to London. He even hung around to greet some fans after the show and sign a few autographs. Lovely man.
Will be deeply missed.

Probably responsible for TV Sci-Fi being taken seriously again, which was in the doldrums in the 1980s. He's definitely the best actor in the entire Star Trek franchise as well.

It was. It is amazing how many of the principals are still going, but perhaps it was because I was so young when I saw it that I thought they were older than they actually were. I rewatched it recently and Bernard Hill was in it for about two minutes, he’s the soldier that finds Claudius hiding after the murder of Caligula and declares him Emperor. He only died two years ago.
Mrs S saw Siân Phillips at the Orange Tree in Richmond last year. She shuffled on, drawled an approximation of her lines, and had the audience eating out of her hand.

One non-speaking scene in Tinker, Tailor and another non-speaking scene opposite Alec Guinness at the end of Smiley's People.
Nice of him to give George his lighter back
