Dale to appeal Donnelly decision on 20:43 - Sep 24 by Daley_Lama

Rochdale and appeals is like the Greek Legend of Sisphyus, try, fail, try again, fail, try again, fail.

I don't blame the club for trying though. Imagine how GD would have felt if he had said "please appeal because everybody and his dog apart from the ref in the ground didn't think it was a red card" and the club had said "no, sorry mate, we don't want to risk £500 or whatever it is"

GD would be slightly peeved, thanks for nothing attitude and i wouldn't blame him either.

I'd love to know if we have ever won one of these.

Or if not the Greeks, an Irishman: "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”

What the authorities can't explain, and don't try to, is why some refs average 8-10 red cards a season and others 2-4. All the fans can do is philosophically say that over a season the bad decisions, for and against, even themselves out.

If anything, it reminds me of the Aussie tactics in challenging umpiring decisions during this summer's Ashes series.

There has to be a line drawn, and just because the player given out / red carded thinks its unfair doesn't mean the challenge has to be made!

To repeat, I was one of the most vociferous on here in maintaining Donnelly's innocence in the post-match aftermath.

It was still wrong to appeal, on the grown-up grounds that the likelihood of success was nil.

*Edit: there's nothing to stop the club from coming out with a statement to the effect that they believe Donnelly's challenge was made in good faith, but that challenging it would, in this instance, be futile.

I think somebody has a fetish for club statements...

Re "It's all wishful thinking. In the real world, it's a waste of £500"

Agreed. The cost is £350 for League 2, and £500 for League 1, but your point is valid.

Or just basic information that explains things to fans that they might have an interest in.

Changing tact somewhat, in light of this decision, does this also mean that we were rather emotive about the way we judged Perkins that time, and that Beeby was right to show the red card?

Not seen the Perkins one for quite a while, but he didn't even make contact did he? Losing him for such a massive game magnified the reaction too.

from memory, there was contact between the two but not what you would class as an out and out foul. Perkins had been in the air in the approach to the challenge, and perhaps like with Donnelly, that had been used to justify the decision. I wouldn't class myself as viewing things through rose coloured glasses when it comes to ref's decisions, and I'm often howling when fans complain about the most obvious decision, but both challenges were ones where I hadn't even considered a card to come out. The influence of an opposition defender in both cases for me was the key factor.

The "no contact" does appear to have been the main gripe

Strange date on that article as its two years after the game.

If they've updated the website and transferred stuff across from the old one, that can often happen. There's some bizarre games appear on the "On the Day" part of this site.

Either that or they were waiting for a big enough picture to accompany the story.

That wait is eternal. Only when text becomes impossible to notice is the battle finally won.

In Hill's interview on the OS he seemingly comes as close as he can to blaming the referee sans actually saying enough to invoke the dreaded wrath of the FL/FA/whoever.

“There is a responsibility, there is a respect, there is a discipline in the team but it is getting overshadowed by other people’s mistakes. We have got a sound, responsible and respectable squad both in training and on a match day. We show the referee respect, the opposition respect, the opposition fans and our own fans respect, and we have a respect campaign within our own football club. There is a responsibility, but it isn’t our fault."

Perhaps he's referring to the odd mistake by our own players undoing our good work in the discipline standards, but I think it's more likely an indictment of the refereeing standards we've seen so far this season.

Good point, I would imagine the blame goes both ways, for George's red card he's probably laying it on the ref mainly like most, however with the Vincenti one it will all be on Pete.

Days like this one weren't supposed to happen to Rochdale.
