Maybe he has decided its time to retire , he is 58 and knows there will likely not be funds for an academy next season, so better to go now and if he is looking for a new challenge, take his time looking. Equally he may already have a job offer... No one is forever, in any walk of life, Tony has done a good job, but every departure is an opportunity for someone else to step in.

Tonys decided to move on, lots of people only spend 4 or 5 years at one place. Good.luck to him. We were lucky to have him for so long, Job going as academy manager at Bradford recently. Maybe he is going there.

Not according to the Chairman it isn't, but with the loss of Tony Ellis, it has lost an awful lot of cachet. Maybe Tony was another victim of the swingeing salary cuts and realises he's value will be better appreciated elsewhere.

When Tony arrived he looked a decent signing, but none of us would have predicted the influence he had on the club. What a signing he turned out to be. I wish him the very best. Thorpe could turn into an excellent replacement.

Tony Ellis has been a terrific servant to Dale. His work in the academy has been nothing short of superb.
He’ll be a big miss.
Also one of my favourites to watch how he worked a game, both his play and winding up the opposition players and fans. We got him at the end of his career, but his first touch and turn was superb. One of those players hated by away fans until he signed for you, then everyone loved him
