Pretty pathetic showing again. Gave 2 goals away due to our own very poor play. Possession football is no good when your players constantly give the ball away before you get over the halfway line and why did the ball end up back with Lynch when we were on the edge of their penalty area? Is this now 5 games in all competitions without a win? Well there's no shame in losing to a team like Salford. I cant even see us improving when Humphrys comes back as we will have given the ball away before it reaches him unless we switch to route one. Oh hang on isn't that how we scored tonight? To say i'm pretty fed up is an understatement. I can't be the only one that's frustrated and sick of the crap style of play. I need lots of beer .

Up The Dale!!

We had zero cutting edge tonight, although Baah added some spark when he came on. Even when he and Humphrys are 100% fit they won't be able to play every minute of every game.

Wonder pass from Jim for our goal. He's been trying that pass everytime he's ever touched the ball for Dale, it had to pay off eventually! I'm pleased for Beesley getting on the score sheet but he really needs to start winning some of his physical battles. He runs plenty but I've seen breadsticks stand their ground better.

I wonder what happened to Dooley. When he first burst on the scene he was taking players on for fun. I remember him playing on the wing away at Bradford, he seemed unstoppable. Now he looks like he wouldn't try and take someone on if his life depended on it.

Another cup competition we are better off out of. These games were pointless and probably loss-making when there were 800 or 900 people in the ground. Without a crowd and with a squad the size ours now is, there is little justification for being involved in the competition.

We have now played 10 games in 38 days, players will be playing with minor injuries and with an increased risk to those who are not already injured. Imagine if Matheson had been seriously injured in the first game he played (bury) we could now be a million quid worse off and for what? The young lads need to play when they are ready, not because we have a crappy-cup fixture we are obliged to fulfill.

It’s no coincidence we’ve turned in another turgid performance with Roberts out of the side.

Another awful home performance against lower league opposition. I think Salford made 10 changes from their strongest team, but they looked faster, more skilful and far better organised with a clear plan as to what they wanted to do,.

Getting hacked off with the constant backwards passing from our players who shouldn't really be playing league football. either they are not good enough, or the coaching they are getting is not suitable for them. square pegs in round holes I'm afraid.

After a great long ball for Beesley's goal, Jim looked like a frightened rabbit, and made too many poor and negative passes , putting team mates under unnecessary pressure.

As someone else says, Keohane is made of straw, but with the added disadvantage of being way too slow to play full back .For goodness sakes, BBM has to see this? As a squad player, he is ok to play in a wide advanced midfield role, on the understanding that he will never ever beat his man. Otherwise; no.

Tavares offered almost nothing, but was playing as a winger...30 yards from Beesley and any headers he might have won. Dooley tried hard, but ultimately is playing 2 or 3 levels too high. Beesley scored a good goal, but did almost nothing else. Done is a busted flush and should retire, thus saving us his ridiculous wage.

Need I go on?

If BBM does not come out and have a moan at our players for that inept performance, whilst admitting that HIS tactics aren't working, he will start to lose support.

Positives?

O'Connell was imperious once again, and Baah came on but looked rusty.

I don't think it was a penalty, although it was hard to tell.

The pitch looks to play superbly. Shame our team does the opposite. They make it look like a ploughed field at times.

Seems to be a regression to the sideways - backwards - sideways - backwards - lose tactics that bored the majority to death most of last season, which we proved was unnecessary e.g. Rotherham last March. We know BBM is restricted in terms of budget for players, and nobody is expecting anything more than League One survival, but Dale are repeating the same old losing sideways - backwards - lose possession games again and again. Five
games without a win, lost the last three, two of those in dire performances against teams from lower divisions. Where is the speed, fight and guile we showed against Sunderland? That was a great performance, no "embarrassment" there, unlike Saturday and tonight. 10 days to sort it out - go for it.

The images are chosen by the mods, so Chaff & Dean. They probably decided Henderson was more appropriate than Ashley Eastham.

On the question of debutants, quite an easy one to answer given the appropriate resources.

The 41 Dale debutants in this competition and its predecessors are:

ADSHEAD Daniel
ALLEN Jamie
AMANKWAH Yeboah
AYINA John-Christophe
BAAH Kwadwo
BENALI Ahmad
BENNETT Rhys
BROWN Chris
BYWATER Stephen
CASTRO PEREIRA Joel
CLARKSON Louie
CLOUGH, Zach
DAWSON Stephen
DUNNE Joe
FINNERTY James
FOTHERGILL Ashley
GILLAM Matty
GRAY Gareth
HAMZAT Juwon
HOLNESS Marcus
HOPPER Harrison
HOTI Florent
JONES Mark
LYNCH Jay
MATHESON Luke
McCOURT Patrick
MIALKOWSKI Kacper
MORLEY Aaron
MULDOON Jack
MYCOCK David
PATTERSON Rory
PHILLIPS Toby
RAFFERTY Joe
RATHBONE Oliver
RUSSELL Sam
SHARPE Richard
SMITH Ben
TAVARES Fabio
THOMAS Peter
WELCH Keith
YONSIAN Florian

John-Christophe Ayina. A Google search tells us he was with us in the 15/16 season, yet I don’t have the remotest memory of him! Was he one of those players who’s brought in as a young prospect but never ends up playing, like Keaton Mulvey?

I completely forgot about the game so missed it ( sounds like I was lucky). When we had that good recent run with the consecutive wins & points, we seemed to be playing some of this possession stuff, but were also taking teams on too. we seemed to know when to "punt it" when to hold on to it etc, & even with a lack of firepower upfront we were putting in some decent performances & I for one was enjoying some of the football

So I wonder what has happened to go back to this last 2 seasons tippy happy play it around stuff that hasn't really worked before? Same manager as a few weeks ago, same or slightly better players with Roberts & Bola in, same division etc. All a bit odd because the change seemed to happen as we were doing well

Answers on a postcard please !!!

I think it’s worth noting that 7 of the players featured last night wouldn’t be in our starting line up when we had a full squad.

For me our downfall was very much similar to Saturday.

When Jim is in the back four we are totally unable to play the style of football which we know we can when either McShane or Roberts (preferably) partner EOC.

Someone I know at the club warned me not go get carried away with our great run the other week as “hard times will fall again”.

I think there’s an expectation we will have these phases over the course of the season. Hopefully having only the league to focus on now our players will get much needed rest time.

Good post. Admittedly I didn't watch the game and personally I think this particular competition is a bit of a joke so won't read into any results or performances in it, but obviously on the back of Saturday the last thing we needed was another poor display and result.

I think what players and supporters alike need at the moment is the upcoming 10 days rest, a chance to reset, bring Humphrys and Baah up to speed and to go again in a winnable home match vs Wimbledon.

Positives? We've lost one of our last five league games and are 16th in the table - I think we'd all take that come May.

Tangled up in blue.

BBM knew that Roberts was not legible to play last night....why the heck did he not play him on Saturday then.....adds composure to a weedy side and best defender at the Club.

Besides, he has to go back eventually.....he's not up here on holiday.
